Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christian theology and religious belief were crucially important to Anglo-Saxon society, and are manifest in the surviving textual, visual and material evidence. This is the first full-length study investigating how Christian theology and religious beliefs permeated society and underpinned social values in early medieval England. The influence of the early medieval Church as an institution is widely acknowledged, but Christian theology itself is generally considered to have been accessible only to a small educated elite. This book shows that theology had a much greater and more significant impact than has been recognised. An examination of theology in its social context, and how it was bound up with local authorities and powers, reveals a much more subtle interpretation of secular processes, and shows how theological debate affected the ways that religious and lay individuals lived and died. This was not a one-way flow, however: this book also examines how social and cultural practices and interests affected the development of theology in Anglo-Saxon England, and how ’popular’ belief interacted with literary and academic traditions. Through case-studies, this book explores how theological debate and discussion affected the personal perspectives of Christian Anglo-Saxons, including where possible those who could not read. In all of these, it is clear that theology was not detached from society or from the experiences of lay people, but formed an essential constituent part.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With great pleasure we issue a completely new revised edition of this important book. This new edition is intended to those who want to understand the Catholic Anglicanism better and stick to its original traditions. It is still one of the most important works that describe and explain the whole Catholic faith, as the Fathers of the Church have handed down. Until now, there were only copies of the original. Since these were relatively difficult to read, we decided to publish a completely new edition. The typesetting of this new edition is completely digitalized and got a fresh new and modernized look. Every paragraph is carefully formatted which makes this book as easy to read as never before. No blurred or black spots that distract the reader anymore. While the whole content is unchanged (including the author's accentuations, illustrations, etc.), biblical citations were reformatted (using Arabic instead of Roman numerals and using a colon to separate chapter from verse) and integrated in the text. Moreover, the table of content has been repositioned and simplified for a better overview. May this new edition venerate our Lord and serve to help people and also clergy to understand the faith even better.

Book excerpt: What do you believe about souls? There are many very different doctrines taught in the world today concerning souls that are believed to be in all humans. By most a soul is believed to be something that is wholly apart from the person a soul is in; that a soul is something that is that is believed to be complete in its self without the person; it will live after the person it is in is dead; it is believed that a soul will exist forever without the person; it will never be dead; therefore, a soul cannot be resurrected from the dead. It is believed that a soul must live someplace forever, and it will live either in Heaven or Hell even if there is no resurrection. The doctrine of unconditional immortality of a deathless soul being in a person, and that soul leaving that person at the death of the person makes it impossible for Christ to have give His life to save that soul from death; if a soul had immortality it would already have life and could never not have life; all Christ could do is give it a reward or punish it.

Book excerpt: The following pages contain the substance of a discourse on the resurrection of the body, preached in Erie, PA, late in the fall of 1845. The occasion of the sermon was the introduction of numerous copies of a book written by George Bush, Professor of Hebrew in the New York University. The avowed object of the book is to overthrow the commonly received opinion of the resurrection of the body. These books were extensively circulated and read. Some embraced the new theory, others found their faith weakened by the bewildering speculations of the learned author. Under these circumstances, believing the error inculcated in the book to be fundamental; that it aimed a fatal blow at the very vitals of Christianity; that it led directly, in all its tendencies, to infidelity; a refutation was undertaken, and the following discourse, in three parts, delivered during three successive sabbaths. - Advertisement.

This book was released on 2017-11-21 with total page 712 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A classic of medieval studies, The Resurrection of the Body in Western Christianity, 200–1336 traces ideas of death and resurrection in early and medieval Christianity. Caroline Walker Bynum explores problems of the body and identity in devotional and theological literature, suggesting that medieval attitudes toward the body still shape modern notions of the individual. This expanded edition includes her 1995 article “Why All the Fuss About the Body? A Medievalist’s Perspective,” which takes a broader perspective on the book’s themes. It also includes a new introduction that explores the context in which the book and article were written, as well as why the Middle Ages matter for how we think about the body and life after death today.
