Chilled water plant system is the largest consumer of energy in HVAC system consuming 75% of the total energy used in HVAC according to the Department of Energy. Operating chilled water plant systems at the recommended AHRI Standard 550/590 for performance rating of water chilling and heat pumps temperature set-points seldom results in optimized operation and cost savings, since factors such as operation schedules, site-specific conditions such as prevailing ambient conditions, part load operations, keep on changing. The aim of this project was to design an optimized heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning chilled water system for a 100,000 square feet facility complex in Houston, Texas. By selecting a chilled water distribution system; chilled water temperatures, flow rate, and sizes; condenser water distribution system, condenser water temperatures, flow rate, and pipe sizes; cooling tower approach temperatures; and piping system optimization, a saving of 25% on the annual energy costs at peak load operations of the complex facility was obtained. This analysis also showed that as the chilled water supply temperature is set upwards, the pump energy increases but the chiller energy and the cooling tower energy decreases resulting in a positive net system gain.

Substantial energy cost savings are possible for HVAC systems in utility markets with time-varying price structures through load shifting by using energy storage resources. While model predictive control has been recommended as a strategy to attain these savings, wide-scale implementation has not yet occurred. In large-scale commercial applications with hundreds of zones, solving a single comprehensive mixed-integer optimization problem online for MPC in real time is not feasible. In this dissertation, a hierarchical decomposition of the overall problem is proposed to address this gap. The proposed hierarchical decomposition uses aggregate models of the airside and waterside problems to reduce complexity, and iterations are not required between the subsystem controllers. Energy cost savings between 5% and 40% can be achieved with this control system based on the amount of energy storage and the economic incentives for load shifting. The decomposition framework is extended to handled systems with embedded battery units. Working towards the long-term objective of implementation, methods for model development are also discussed. Models and data are developed for a large-scale case study loosely based on the Stanford University central HVAC plant. The parameters from the case study are made publicly available for researchers in the HVAC community who would like to design other control architectures and evaluate their performance. The case study is also used to demonstrate that the proposed decomposition can be solved in real time. Finally, a procedure for tracking zone regions using MPC is outlined. Nominal stability for this controller is proven, and its benefits in control performance over heuristic strategies is exemplified via simulation studies.

Book excerpt: This dissertation research investigates on energy optimal operations of heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems for residential and commercial buildings, with investigations on two classes of approaches, i.e. Self-optimizing Control (SOC) based control structure optimization and Extremum Seeking Control (ESC) based real-time optimization, as well as their synergy. As the preliminary study, three existing ESC methods are compared, i.e. the conventional dither ESC, input-output correlation ESC (IOC-ESC), and proportion-integral ESC (PI-ESC). The primary goal for this study is to evaluate the performance robustness of each ESC to parametric variation. The three ESC strategies are first evaluated with simulation study using a Modelica model of an air source heat pump (ASHP) model. Then, laboratory tests are conducted with IOC-ESC and CON-ESC on a mini-split air conditioning system. Both simulation and experimental results show that PI-ESC archives fastest convergent speed, while IOC-ESC is most robust to parametric variation among three methods. For plant operation with multiple potential inputs for ESC design, an ESC integrated online input selection approach is proposed based on Hessian estimation and SVD analysis. The dimensionality of manipulated inputs can be reduced by pruning and/or combining the available manipulated inputs. Error bound analysis is conducted for the proposed input selection process. Then, the proposed procedure is validated with both numerical example and a Modelica based chilled-water plant model. The SOC based control structure optimization is studied from three perspectives, with the key focus of how to determine the optimal selection of controlled variables (CVs) with online or historical data. First, an online local SOC procedure is proposed by using the ditherdemodulation based gradient and Hessian estimates that have been developed in ESC, and the proposed method is validated with the Modelica ASHP model. Secondly, a data-driven global SOC method is proposed by applying the technique of sparse identification for nonlinear dynamics (SINDy) to historical data. For the static plant model thus derived, tracking the necessary condition of optimality yields the globally optimal solutions of CV selection in an analytical fashion. Such SOC framework is validate with the Modelica-based chilled-water plant operation. Then, this data-driven global SOC approach is extended to plant operation with wide range of disturbance variations which is subject to the changes of active constraint set. With the plant model obtained by the SINDy based procedure, a parametric programming enabled constrained optimization framework is utilized to derive the controlled variables for each region of different active constraint set. Again, simulation based validation is conducted with the Modelica based chilled-water plant model.

Firstly, it introduces the state-space method for developing dynamic models of all components in a central air-conditioning system. The models are primarily nonlinear and based on the fundamental principle of energy and mass conservation, and are transformed into state-space form through linearization. The book goes on to describe and discuss the state-space models with the help of graph theory and the structure-matrix theory. Subsequently, virtual sensor calibration and virtual sensing methods (which are very useful for real system control) are illustrated together with a case study. Model-based predictive control and state-space feedback control are applied to air-conditioning systems to yield better local control, while the air-side synergic control scheme and a global optimization strategy based on the decomposition-coordination method are developed so as to achieve energy conservation in the central air-conditioning system. Lastly, control strategies for VAV systems including total air volume control and trim & response static pressure control are investigated in practice.
