The second book in the new Sinister Summer series by #1 NYT bestselling author Kiersten White, called "perfect for fans of Lemony Snicket, Edward Gorey, and Roald Dahl," by Shelf Awareness. After leaving Fathoms of Fun, the kids are on their way to the next odd summer destination their aunt has chosen for them. This time, they find themselves dropped off at the Sanguine Spa in the “little Transylvania Mountains.” There they meet the owners: Mina, her mysterious little sister, Lucy (who is extremely pale, can’t go in the sunlight, and has an affinity for hanging upside down from the ceiling), and their intimidating guardian, the Count. When the Count sends all the children in the spa on a scavenger hunt, the Sinister-Winterbottoms use the excuse to snoop around and discover that this spa may be more than just eerie—it might also hold clues to what happened to their parents. When Wil starts to show vampiric symptoms, the twins resolve to investigate what’s really going on at the Sanguine Spa. The second book in the Sinister Summer series continues the adventures of the Sinister-Winterbottoms and their aunt who never saw a discount vacation destination she didn’t love.

Download or read book Heathcliff Redux written by Lily Tuck and published by Atlantic Monthly Press. This book was released on 2020-02-04 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Book Award winner explores the hidden dynamics of relationships with “lean, intriguing, formally inventive prose” in this collection (Kirkus Reviews). A New York Times Editor’s Choice In Heathcliff Redux, the novella that begins this collection, a married woman reads Wuthering Heights—just as she falls under the erotic and destructive spell of her own Heathcliff. In the stories that follow, a single photograph illuminates the intricate web of connections between friends at an Italian café; a forgotten act of violence in New York’s Carl Schurz Park returns to haunt the present; and a woman is prompted by a flurry of mysterious emails to recall her time as a member of the infamous Rajneesh cult. With keen psychological insight and delicate restraint, Lily Tuck pries open the desires, doubts, and secret motives of her characters and exposes their vulnerabilities to the light. Sharp and unflinching, the novella and stories together form an exquisitely crafted collection.

Book Synopsis Social Identity and Literary Form in the Victorian Novel by : Jill Franks
Download or read book Social Identity and Literary Form in the Victorian Novel written by Jill Franks and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2022-07-29 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enormous social changes during the Victorian era inspired some of the finest novels in the English language. In the final decades of the century, rigid application of gender rules and class hierarchies began to relax. Consciousness of the injustice of class- and gender-based discrimination was growing. Meanwhile, bias against nonwhite peoples was worsening. The British used scientific racism to justify their relentless expansion in Africa and Asia. Viewing Victorian literature through the lens of these social changes gives the modern reader a fresh way to interpret the novels and to appreciate their relevance to contemporary issues. Nineteenth-century novelists deployed realism, satire, and the bildungsroman to resist or support leading ideologies of their time, including the separate spheres doctrine and British supremacism. Each chapter is an elaboration of the author's university lectures about Victorian classics. The tone is scholarly yet conversational, directed to the undergraduate student as well as the general reader or Victoriaphile. The text presents concepts in interdisciplinary cultural studies, discusses the uses of genre for rhetorical and social purposes, and exposes paradoxes of the era. The coherent style, abundant examples, discussion questions, and literary glossary make this book a valuable supplement for readers of the Victorian novel.

Book Synopsis A Topography Plagued by Marginality in Victorian Novels by : Catalina Balinisteanu-Furdu

This book was released on 2022-04-12 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to analyse how marginality is experienced by ́the Other ́ (women, orphans, children, labourers) in Victorian literature and how these individuals succeed in transgressing borders or attempt at doing this. The Other uses many strategies to climb the social ladder and to preserve a certain social position: marrying into a superior social class, subverting the master ́s position and usurping him, acquiring education and knowledge to become superior, tempting the master into passionate love affairs, approaching interpersonal communication, or staying true to one ́s own self, defending ones moral values, accepting lessons of domesticity, becoming an ́angel in the house ́, travelling to unknown territories, exchanging reality for fictional worlds, and so on. On their way of achieving their goals, the Others are shown in different spaces which contribute to the construction of their identity. Our survey unfolds the complexity of the marginalization experience of the Victorian Others, their individual or collective mentality and their agency. Drawing on Otherness from six Victorian novels, our book takes an interpretative approach. The analysis of spaces revealed how the positionality of women or orphans or labourers in social hierarchies of gender, race and legal status influences and even affects their legitimacy or access to a superior position. Their agency has not always overcome their marginalization embedded within the structure of society, but at least temporarily and gradually it has improved the women ́s living conditions by being rewarded with a beautiful family or by earning a living thus eluding the dependency on a man. By contextualizing the six novels into the Victorian Age, our survey will hopefully contribute to the understanding of women and of their attempts at emancipation by demonstrating how their positionality impacts their agency and their personality.
