Book excerpt: Detailed surface heat transfer data, oil flow, and schlieren photographs are presented for high speed flow separation ahead of finite span, forward facing steps on flat plates. Step spans were varied from three to ten times as large as the step height, and the step heights are three to four times larger than the undisturbed turbulent boundary layer thickness. Reynolds numbers, based on plate length, were approximately 15 million for both Mach 4.75 and Mach 5.04 local undisturbed flows over the flat plate surface. For these test conditions, the maximum extent of separation ahead of the step is approximately 4.4 times as large as the step height independent of step span, and peak heating rates were measured that are more than six to eight times larger than the undisturbed flow heating rates. Peak heating on the plate surface occurs slightly upstream and approximately 1/2 step height inboard of the outboard sides of the steps; the increase in peak heat transfer coefficients over the undisturbed flow values decreases with increasing step span. In addition to presenting the detailed surface heat transfer data, a plausible theoretical analysis is presented for calculating the region of turbulent boundary layer separation ahead of these finite span steps.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the results of scientific research performed over the past two decades by the authors. The book discusses some issues of separated laminar flows that are of great practical interest for the development of new technologies using microchannel flows, where separation zones can form. Of particular interest is the complex mechanism of flow separation with superimposed high external turbulence. The challenges of finding the optimal location for the cavities and fins on heat exchange surfaces are also considered. This is an important fundamental and practical problem when creating new schemes of efficient heat exchangers in various power plants. A wide class of problems of turbulent flow in tubes with flow separation is considered. These data will be useful in engineering estimates of the thermal–hydraulic efficiency of various heat transfer intensifiers. This book focuses on the analysis of thermal characteristics of separated flows, as well as the possibility of controlling the intensity of heat exchange processes, from the point of view of both their intensification and their suppression.

Book excerpt: A turbulent boundary layer separated by a forward-facing step was observed on the cylindrical portion of a hemisphere-cone-cylinder test vehicle. Tip blunting, producing a shear flow, was found to induce higher pressures on the cylindrical portion than were predicted from ballistic tunnel data of unblunted projectiles. An approximate method for predicting this blunt-body pressure distribution was hypothesized. These findings, along with the hypothesis, were substantiated by a wind tunnel test of a similar body. The peak pressure ratios of the separation were smaller in magnitude than flat plate theory predicted because of the effect of the shear flow. The decrement in heating of the separated flow, relative to the corresponding attached flow, was found to compare well with the expected results.

Book excerpt: Interdisciplinary and Advanced Topics in Science and Engineering, Volume 3: Separation of Flow presents the problem of the separation of fluid flow. This book provides information covering the fields of basic physical processes, analyses, and experiments concerning flow separation. Organized into 12 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the flow separation on the body surface as discusses in various classical examples. This text then examines the analytical and experimental results of the laminar boundary layer of steady, two-dimensional flows in the subsonic speed range. Other chapters consider the study of flow separation on the two-dimensional body, flow separation on three-dimensional body shape and particularly on bodies of revolution. This book discusses as well the analytical solutions of the unsteady flow separation. The final chapter deals with the purpose of separation flow control to raise efficiency or to enhance the performance of vehicles and fluid machineries involving various engineering applications. This book is a valuable resource for engineers.

Book excerpt: It was on a proposal of the late Professor Maurice Roy, member of the French Academy of Sciences, that in 1982, the General Assembly of the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics decided to sponsor a symposium on Turbulent Shear-Layer/Shock-Wave Interactions. This sympo sium might be arranged in Paris -or in its immediate vicinity-during the year 1985. Upon request of Professor Robert Legendre, member of the French Academy of Sciences, the organization of the symposium might be provided by the Office National d'Etudes et de Recherches Aerospatiales (ONERA). The request was very favorably received by Monsieur l'Ingenieur General Andre Auriol, then General Director of ONERA. The subject of interactions between shock-waves and turbulent dissipative layers is of considerable importance for many practical devices and has a wide range of engineering applications. Such phenomena occur almost inevitably in any transonic or supersonic flow and the subject has given rise to an important research effort since the advent of high speed fluid mechanics, more than forty years ago. However, with the coming of age of modern computers and the development of new sophisticated measurement techniques, considerable progress has been made in the field over the past fifteen years. The aim of the symposium was to provide an updated status of the research effort devoted to shear layer/shock-wave interactions and to present the most significant results obtained recently.

Book excerpt: During the last decade, the rapid growth of knowledge in the field of fluid mechanics and heat transfer has resulted in many significant ad vances of interest to students, engineers, and scientists. Accordingly, a course entitled "Modern Developments in Fluid Mechanics and Heat Transfer" was given at the University of California to present significant recent theoretical and experimental work. The course consisted of seven parts: I-Introduction; II-Hydraulic Analogy for Gas Dynamics; 111- Turbulence and Unsteady Gas Dynamics; IV-Rarefied and Radiation Gas Dynamics; V-Biological Fluid Mechanics; VI-Hypersonic and Plasma Gas Dynamics; and VII-Heat Transfer in Hypersonic Flows. The material, presented by the undersigned as course instructor and by various guest lecturers, could easily be adapted by other universities for use as a text for a one-semester senior or graduate course on the subject. Due to the extensive notes developed during the University of California course, it was decided to publish the material in three volumes, of which the present is the first. The succeeding volumes will be entitled "Selected Topics in Fluid and Bio-Fluid Mechanics" and "Introduction to Steady and Unsteady Gas Dynamics." Finally, I must express a word of appreciation to my wife Irene and to my children, Wellington Jr. and Victoria, who made it possible for me to write and edit this book in the very quiet atmosphere of our home.

Book excerpt: Some of the factors believed to affect the strength and ductile-to-brittle transition temperature of bainitic steels, including mean ferrite path and degree of internal strain, have been studied. Strength was measured by diamond pyramid hardness, and transition temperature was obtained from a tensile impact test on small notched specimens. Seven laboratory heats of carbon-molybdenum steel and two heats of carbon steel were transformed isothermally to bainite at various temperatures and tested. Mean-ferrite-path measurements were made on electron micrographs of three of these steels. The mean ferrite path was found to have only a slight effect on the strength of bainite and no effect on the transition temperature. Preliminary measurements of X-ray line broadening indicate that the degree of internal strain may be the controlling factor in determining the strength of bainite. The transition temperatures of the bainites fell within a band between -80 and -160 degrees C and did not vary regularly with hardness, carbon or alloy content, or mean ferrite path. In the SAE 1062 steel at high strength levels, bainite has a transition temperature lower than that of tempered martensite at the same strength level.
