Book excerpt: Composite Materials is a modern reference book, tutorial in style, covering functions of composites relating to applications in electronic packaging, thermal management, smart structures and other timely technologies rarely covered in existing books on composites. It also treats materials with polymer, metal, cement, carbon and ceramics matrices, contrasting with others that emphasise polymer-matrix composites. This functional approach will be useful to both practitioners and students. A good selection of example problems, solutions and figures, together with a new and vibrant approach, provides a valuable reference source for all engineers working with composite materials.

Book excerpt: For uni-directional fibrous composites and laminated composites, a heat-balance integral method has been developed for the analysis of transient heat flow along the fibers or in the plane of laminates. The method is based on the construction of, for the two constituent media, temperature profiles which not only satisfy the necessary boundary conditions but also fulfill the asymptotic error function properties when inter-region conduction is vanishingly small or at very early times of the heat transient.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With anticipated increased use of composite materials in aerospace structures and other applications, thermal properties of composites are needed as essential design information. In the past there was only scanty amount of research effort in thermal analysis of composites, as most of the work has been concerned with their mechanical properties. This report contains results from a rigorous analysis to determine steady-state effective thermal conductivities of fiber-matrix type of composites. The fibers bundled into twos are considered dispersed in a matrix of resin. The dispersion patterns of configurations considered are: (1) uni-directional fibers in a matrix, as the simplest geometry, and (2) 0.90 configuration in which two uni-directional tapes are overlaid at 90 degrees to each other. The method of analysis is to solve a two-region steady-state heat conduction equation either analytically or numerically. The analysis assumes a prior knowledge of the geometry of a composite and the constituents thermal conductivities.

Book excerpt: This book covers all aspects of composite materials processing and manufacturing using microwave heating technology and their applications in various industrial processes. Depending in the processing and material used, the composites are divided into three major segments: Metal matrix composites (MMCS), ceramics composites (CMCS), and polymer matrix composites (PMCS), respectively. During the manufacturing process of these composite materials, conventional heating technologies are used in which the heat is transferred from the electrical resistance coils to the material via conventional modes of heat transfer. Issues like non-uniform temperature distribution, poor curing efficiency, generation of the in-process scarp, long process cycle, high energy consumption and cost make traditional manufacturing route a difficult choice to select. Recently, microwave-assisted heating has emerged as a promising route for the fabrication of composites as a cost-effective environmentally sustainablemanufacturing process that yields improved mechanical properties which is the main topic of this book. It looks into the mechanism, salient features, and important aspects of microwave heating and their interaction with different composites materials. It also presents other manufacturing processes of various composites using microwave heating during casting, drilling, recycling, sintering, material joining, surface engineering. This book will appeal to students, researchers and scientists working in the area of composite materials processing and manufacturing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book introduces modern atomistic techniques for predicting heat transfer in nanostructures, and discusses the applications of these techniques on three modern topics. The study of heat transport in screw-dislocated nanowires with low thermal conductivity in their bulk form represents the knowledge base needed for engineering thermal transport in advanced thermoelectric and electronic materials, and suggests a new route to lower thermal conductivity that could promote thermoelectricity. The study of high-temperature coating composite materials facilitates the understanding of the role played by composition and structural characterization, which is difficult to approach via experiments. And the understanding of the impact of deformations, such as bending and collapsing on thermal transport along carbon nanotubes, is important as carbon nanotubes, due to their exceptional thermal and mechanical properties, are excellent material candidates in a variety of applications, including thermal interface materials, thermal switches and composite materials.

This book was released on 2016-01-14 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This pioneering book presents new models for the thermomechanical behavior of composite materials and structures taking into account internal physico-chemical transformations such as thermodecomposition, sublimation and melting at high temperatures (up to 3000 K). It is of great importance for the design of new thermostable materials and for the investigation of reliability and fire safety of composite structures. It also supports the investigation of interaction of composites with laser irradiation and the design of heat-shield systems. Structural methods are presented for calculating the effective mechanical and thermal properties of matrices, fibres and unidirectional, reinforced by dispersed particles and textile composites, in terms of properties of their constituent phases. Useful calculation methods are developed for characteristics such as the rate of thermomechanical erosion of composites under high-speed flow and the heat deformation of composites with account of chemical shrinkage. The author expansively compares modeling results with experimental data, and readers will find unique experimental results on mechanical and thermal properties of composites under temperatures up to 3000 K. Chapters show how the behavior of composite shells under high temperatures is simulated by the finite-element method and so cylindrical and axisymmetric composite shells and composite plates are investigated under local high-temperature heating. The book will be of interest to researchers and to engineers designing composite structures, and invaluable to materials scientists developing advanced performance thermostable materials.
