Book Synopsis Introducing Biological Energetics by : Norman W. H. Cheetham
Download or read book Introducing Biological Energetics written by Norman W. H. Cheetham and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2010-10-07 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This novel, interdisciplinary text presents biological understanding in terms of general underlying principles, treating energy as the overarching theme and emphasizing the all-pervading influence of energy transformation in every process, both living and non-living. Key processes and concepts are explained in turn, culminating in a description of the overall functioning and regulation of a living cell. The book rounds off the story of life with a brief account of the endosymbiotic origins of eukaryotic cells, the development of multicellularity, and the emergence of modern plants and animals. Multidisciplinary research in science is becoming commonplace. However, as traditional boundaries start to break down, researchers are increasingly aware of the deficiencies in their knowledge of related disciplines. Introducing Biological Energetics redresses the reciprocal imbalance in the knowledge levels of physical and biological scientists in particular. Its style of presentation and depth of treatment has been carefully designed to unite these two readerships.

Download or read book Heat Energy written by Bold Kids and published by . This book was released on 2022-08-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you're looking for facts on heat, you've come to the right place. This book will provide you with a quick overview of the basics of heat energy. Learn how heat is created and used. You'll be surprised by how many things you didn't know about it! Keep reading to learn more! And remember, thermal energy is a renewable source of energy. But what exactly is thermal energy? How does it work? Heat energy is the result of the sun's radiation reaching the earth. The earth's atmosphere absorbs the sun's rays and radiates the heat back to space. Dark objects absorb radiant energy faster than light-colored ones, so they can be used as thermometers. Another way heat energy is transferred is through conduction, and this is how a metal spoon handle gets hot when you heat it. Heat can be transferred between objects by conduction, as well. Another common example of heat energy at work is the melting of solids. Adding ice to a glass of water will decrease its temperature. It absorbs thermal energy by converting it to liquid. A glass of water that's at 70 degrees will contain more thermal energy than one that's at 60 degrees. Computer components use heat energy to function, which needs to be cooled with a fan. Meanwhile, a hot stove transmits heat energy by accelerating the speed of water molecules. The first person to discuss the concept of thermal energy was James Joule. Joule discovered that heat is an important component of matter, and that the amount of heat a material has doesn't necessarily depend on the amount of work it performs. The first thermometer was invented in 1689 by the English mathematician James Prescott Joule. He also coined the term "thermal energy."

Book Synopsis Physics of the Human Body by : Irving P. Herman
Download or read book Physics of the Human Body written by Irving P. Herman and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-01-09 with total page 963 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book comprehensively addresses the physics and engineering aspects of human physiology by using and building on first-year college physics and mathematics. Topics include the mechanics of the static body and the body in motion, the mechanical properties of the body, muscles in the body, the energetics of body metabolism, fluid flow in the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, the acoustics of sound waves in speaking and hearing, vision and the optics of the eye, the electrical properties of the body, and the basic engineering principles of feedback and control in regulating all aspects of function. The goal of this text is to clearly explain the physics issues concerning the human body, in part by developing and then using simple and subsequently more refined models of the macrophysics of the human body. Many chapters include a brief review of the underlying physics. There are problems at the end of each chapter; solutions to selected problems are also provided. This second edition enhances the treatments of the physics of motion, sports, and diseases and disorders, and integrates discussions of these topics as they appear throughout the book. Also, it briefly addresses physical measurements of and in the body, and offers a broader selection of problems, which, as in the first edition, are geared to a range of student levels. This text is geared to undergraduates interested in physics, medical applications of physics, quantitative physiology, medicine, and biomedical engineering.
