If you have family history of heart disease or stroke; if you have -- or are at risk for -- diabetes; even if you are considered a "healthy" person, Healthy Smile, Healthier Life has information that can help you live a healthier, happier... and longer life.As a dentist, the mouth is the obvious starting place for Dr. Norige's quest for better patient health. In Healthy Smile, Healthier Life, Dr. Norige explains -- in plain English -- the red flags in your mouth that signal unnecessary stress is being placed on your heart, and other warning signs he can see that affect more than your mouth. Why is a dentist concerned with recognizing these signs? The mouth is part of the whole body system, which means that any change in the mouth can have a ripple effect throughout the body. Dr. Norige's philosophy of complete health dentistry guides him to find ways to positively change your oral health and therefore your overall health.Take your first step towards a better understanding of the connection between your oral health and overall health with Healthy Smile, Healthier Life.

This book was released on 2019 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dental caries, also known as tooth decay, is the most common chronic disease affecting children and a major public health issue of concern due to its ability to impact a child's growth, development, and overall well-being. Closely tied to socio-economic status, race, and ethnicity, research points to the inverse relationship existing between dental caries experience and income levels. Of importance is the term "oral health" and its relationship to overall health. Oral health encompasses the entire health of the mouth including structures of the oral cavity that impact one's ability to eat, speak, and communicate. Consequently, the status of one's oral health has the capacity to affect their overall quality of life. As oral health is influenced by social determinants, interdisciplinary approaches and interventions have been taken to promote oral health. One such effort to address the oral health disparities existing in Los Angeles County is the Educational Community Health Outreach-Local Dental Pilot Project (ECHO-LDPP). ECHO-LDPP is an interdisciplinary program that embraces and implements the "whole child," "whole family," and "whole community" approach to address the environmental and social factors affecting oral health (ECHO-LDPP, 2018, p.3). Since nutrition is one of the factors influencing dental caries, imparting nutrition knowledge is essential to promoting oral health. Therefore, this project was initiated to develop nutrition resources in support of oral health that can be utilized by both community health educators and the underserved communities served by ECHO-LDPP.

Oral health is an integral part of general health across the life course, and this book examines nutritional and oral health considerations from childhood through to old age, with particular attention focused on the consequences of demographic changes. Current knowledge on the consequences of poor diet for the development and integrity of the oral cavity, tooth loss, and the progression of oral diseases is thoroughly reviewed. Likewise, the importance of maintenance of a disease-free and functional dentition for nutritional well-being at all stages of life is explained. Evidence regarding the impact of oral rehabilitation on nutritional status is evaluated, and strategies for changing dietary behaviour in order to promote oral health are described. Nutrition and Oral Health will be an ideal source of information for all who are seeking a clearly written update on the subject.

Book excerpt: Modern science is revealing how our face grows in response to muscle movement during childhood. Therefore, we have started to help children shape healthy smiles by teaching them healthy habits. In this book, we show children some common daily habits that can push their muscles, bones, and teeth in the wrong direction. Simply by changing these habits early on, we can keep teeth, muscles, and bones in a healthy balance that stays for life. If these habits are corrected early enough, we may even prevent the need for orthodontics in teenagers and adults. This book will help open a dialogue with your child on how to recognize these habits and avoid them. Reading this book with your child will also help you evaluate if any professional intervention is needed from your dental health team.
