Book excerpt: Exercise in later life is important for health and well-being, yet motivating older adults to exercise can be difficult. This book addresses that need by tailoring "The Transtheoretical Model" of behavior change to the client's level of readiness for change. The contributors show how TTM can be used to help older adults with varying needs and abilities to change their exercise behaviors. This book is essential for health care professionals including nurses, exercise specialists, occupational therapists, social workers, and others interested in helping older adults incorporate exercise into their daily lives.

Book excerpt: "The Oxford Handbook of Geropsychology provides students and experienced clinicians and clinical researchers alike with a comprehensive and contemporary overview of developments in the field of geropsychology. Informed by an international perspective, the introductory section covers demographics, meta-analyses in geropsychology, social capital and gender, cognitive development, and ageing. Sections on assessment and formulation include chapters on interviewing older people, psychological assessment strategies, capacity and suicidal ideation, and understanding long term care environments. Psychological distress and their causes are reviewed with chapters focusing upon late-life depression and anxiety, psychosis, and personality disorders. In this section, neuropsychiatric approaches to working with older people and risk factors relating to cognitive health are reviewed. Intervention strategies covered include cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and family therapy. Interprofessional teamwork and aspects of work with persons with dementia (PwD), caregivers, and care staff, are also covered. Chapters on interventions address specific populations such as lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender older persons, people with physical and psychological comorbidities, and those experiencing grief and bereavement. Finally, this Handbook explores new horizons, including positive ageing, exercise and health promotion, and the use of new media such as online and virtual reality interactive technologies in clinical research and practice with older adults." -- From the Amazon

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to examine the relationships among self-direction in learning, health-promoting behaviors, and physical therapy support for autonomy in older adults. Self-direction in learning was measured by the Oddi Continuing Learning Inventory, participation in health-promoting behaviors was measured by the Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile II, and physical therapy support for autonomy was measured by the Health Care Climate Questionnaire. In addition, a questionnaire gathering demographic information about the participant's age, educational level, marital status, and gender was administered. The 20 participants are community-dwelling older adults who participated in out-patient physical therapy for four weeks. The participants completed the Oddi Continuing Learning Inventory, the Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile II, the Health Care Climate Questionnaire, as well as a demographic questionnaire. Descriptive statistics, paired t-tests, one-way ANOVAs, and Pearson coefficient correlations were used to analyze the data. The findings in this study indicated a statistically significant relationship between an older adults' self-direction in learning and participation in health-promoting behaviors. The findings also indicate that there is no statistically significant relationship between the participant's self-direction in learning and physical therapy support for autonomy, nor is there a statistically significant relationship between the participant's health-promoting behaviors and physical therapy support for autonomy. Additional findings indicate there is a relationship between educational level and participation in health-promoting behaviors and educational level and self-direction in learning. A statistically significant relationship was found between gender and physical therapy support for autonomy, with females reporting higher scores on the healthcare climate questionnaire. These findings suggest that it would be important for a physical therapist to gather information related to a patient's degree of self-direction in learning and educational level as both are related to participation in health-promoting behaviors. Educational approaches can be adapted by the physical therapist to better meet the needs and motivations of this patient population. Further research is needed into other factors that may contribute to a physical therapist's ability to influence an older adult's self- direction in learning and health-promoting behaviors.
