Book excerpt: Brought up on stories and myths of the Kalahari Bushmen, Rupert Isaacson journeys to the dry vast grassland -- which stretches across South Africa, Botswana, and Namibia -- to find out the truth behind these childhood stories. Deep in the Kalahari, Isaacson meets the last groups of Bushmen still living the traditional way, caught between their ancient culture and the growing need to protect and reclaim their dwindling hunting grounds. Little by little he is drawn into the fascinating web of ritual and prophecy that make up the Bushman reality. He hears of shamans who turn into lions, sees leopards conjured from the landscape as though by magic. He attends trance-inducing dances and witnesses incredible healings. But he also sees the heart-wrenching social problems of a dispossessed people. What follows is an adventure of an intensity he could never have predicted. The Healing Land records Isaacson's personal transformation amid these extraordinary people, and his passionate contribution to their political struggle. It captures his enchantment with the character, corruption, kindness, and confusion of a place that has wrenched itself from the Stone Age into the new millennium.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1924, the United States began a bold program in public health. The Indian Service of the United States hired its first nurses to work among Indians living on reservations. This corps of white women were dedicated to improving Indian health. In 1928, the first field nurses arrived in the Mission Indian Agency of Southern California. These nurses visited homes and schools, providing public health and sanitation information regarding disease causation and prevention. Over time, field nurses and Native people formed a positive working relationship that resulted in the decline of mortality from infectious diseases. Many Native Americans accepted and used Western medicine to fight pathogens, while also continuing Indigenous medicine ways. Nurses helped control tuberculosis, measles, influenza, pneumonia, and a host of gastrointestinal sicknesses. In partnership with the community, nurses quarantined people with contagious diseases, tested for infections, and tracked patients and contacts. Indians turned to nurses and learned about disease prevention. With strong hearts, Indians eagerly participated in the tuberculosis campaign of 1939–40 to x-ray tribal members living on twenty-nine reservations. Through their cooperative efforts, Indians and health-care providers decreased deaths, cases, and misery among the tribes of Southern California.

Book excerpt: This journey to the beginnings of the physician's art brings to life the civilizations of the ancient world--Egypt of the Pharaohs, Greece at the time of Hippocrates, Rome under the Caesars, the India of Ashoka, and China as Mencius knew it. Probing the documents and artifacts of the ancient world with a scientist's mind and a detective's eye, Guido Majno pieces together the difficulties people faced in the effort to survive their injuries, as well as the odd, chilling, or inspiring ways in which they rose to the challenge. In asking whether the early healers might have benefited their patients, or only hastened their trip to the grave, Dr. Majno uncovered surprising answers by testing ancient prescriptions in a modern laboratory. Illustrated with hundreds of photographs, many in full color, and climaxing ten years of work, The Healing Hand is a spectacular recreation of man's attempts to conquer pain and disease.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I strive to create an example of all that I can be so that others in my situation can see disability for what it is. Disability does not separate me from anyone. All people are disabled, and only some are temporarily enabled. Everyone will age. Everyone will need a little help. If people understand this, then all are equal. - Thomas Thomas is a brilliant student, an advocate for people with special needs, and a loving son and brother. He has a rare form of muscular dystrophy that over a short time leaves him completely, physically helpless. He cannot roll over, swat away flies, or feed himself, and he requires 24/7 care. But despite his daily challenges, Thomas never lets his disability get in the way. Always quick with a joke, he’s eternally optimistic, finds the positive in any situation, and looks out for those around him, trying to make their day better. In Living in the Land of the Uprights, Thomas’s mother, Kathy, recounts Thomas’s journey as their family faces uphill battles navigating doctor’s appointments, visits to emergency rooms, advocating for funding, and fighting for equal rights for Thomas. A close-knit family, they celebrate successes and support each other through heartbreak. In his time on earth, Thomas faces the world on his terms and wows everyone he encounters, never taking no for an answer and lobbying to move across the country to follow his dream. He and his family have no idea of the powerful impact he will have and how he will change so many lives. When you read this book, not only will you feel the pure blissful passion of Thomas’s life story, but you will also learn how to leave a legacy that will live forever as Thomas has done ... through kindness, perseverance, and humour.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Archangel Michael taught interactive healing to author Rekha Vidyarthi; through this technique, she has assisted the healing process in people for sixteen years. Michael said to her You need to heal yourself in order to heal others. Written with Jesuss guidance, Healing Hands of Jesus illustrates how you can choose to change the karmic things and past lives that are happening right now. Angels heal many lives at once by healing one personality and integrating one fragment at a time into the higher self, shortening the incarnation of a troubled past and present. Every experience in life is created by unconscious thoughts. Your outer situation triggers your innermost emotions and feelings. The mind requires answers in order to change ones perspective. Because most answers lie either in childhood or in a past life, it is necessary to look within. The angels trigger our memories to identify the connection, which is when healing begins. Such things as parental imprinting, family karma, ego, anger, fear, guilt, sadness, depression, or learned behavior perpetuate from one life to the next. These issues repeat themselves through many lives until we learn how to heal the issues. Healing Hands of Jesus explains that we must ask forgiveness for the negative things that are happening to us now in order to heal ourselves.

Book excerpt: You can help others heal. It is the purpose of this book to explain how this is possible, and to teach the reader the healing method based on what was once known as "suggestive therapeutics." A century ago thousands of people came to the Weltmer Institute in Nevada, Missouri for healing. The healing method, discovered by Sidney A. Weltmer, was so successful that a railway was re-routed to the town and its post office enlarged to keep up with the demand. The author merged Weltmer's methods with the insights and recommendations of renowned psychic, Edgar Cayce, for a more spiritual approach to suggestive therapeutics. Part One of this book offers rare and inspiring insights into the nature of spiritual healing, while Part Two teaches the technique in clear and simple language. "I recommend this book to anyone attempting to help others improve their health and well-being. It is both inspirational and practical." -John Van Auken, Director, Edgar Cayce Foundation.
