Friend Toni chooses marriage and a family. Tragedy strikes when her toddler, Benjie, is brain-injured in an accident, then, worse yet, simply disappears from home one day. Andy decides to name the hospital after the missing boy. Andyas acquaintance with a fellow med student from Canada mellows into deep love. On completing their MD degrees, they marry, and perform their residencies in a Montreal hospital. One day the missing Benjie reappears in his familyas living room. Retarded, he cannot tell where he has been. Eventually his weakened body contracts pneumonia, and he dies. Andyas foundation breaks ground for the hospital. She has attained closure for the grief of Benjieas parents, and her own, for now Benjieas name and spirit live on, in the institution devoted to healing children.
