Both structurally and functionally, there are many peculiarities that differentiate the brain from all other organs. Our understanding of the physiology and biochemistry of the brain has improved dramatically in the last two decades. The exact role and regulation of magnesium, in particular, remains elusive, largely because intracellular levels are so difficult to routinely quantify. Chronic pain and opioid use disorder both represent complex human conditions affecting millions of Americans and causing untold disability and loss of function. In the context of the growing opioid problem, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) launched an Opioids Action Plan in early 2016.
