Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1 Corinthians 11, the Apostle Paul provides important instructions about two symbolic practices within Christianity. The most well-known of these practices is the Lord's Supper, found in the second half of 1 Corinthians 11. However, in the first half of the same chapter, Paul teaches about the relationships between God and His people. He explains that these relationships -- and the glory of the Lord -- are symbolically represented when men and women cover (or uncover) their heads during times of prayer. God uses Scripture to provide His good direction in the lives of His people – but how should believers today respond to this passage? What does it take to gain a well-grounded understanding of the practice that Paul is discussing? And why did it matter to God whether or not Christian women covered their heads when they prayed? This book carefully navigates these questions by considering the relevant details of both the New Testament passage and First Century Corinthian culture. ======= This book is a companion volume to the book, "Headcovering Throughout Christian History."

This booklet is included in and comprises a section of my book “The Special Ministries of Women: Pro-Headcovering, Pro-Remarriage in 1 Corinthians 11, Song of Solomon, and Jesus' Teaching on Divorce.” The context indicates the 1 Corinthians 11a Headcovering is a church meeting observance, like the Lord’s Supper church meeting observance in the same chapter. The Headcovering observance symbolizes the church’s submission to God-ordained authority and gender roles, which have a huge impact on families, churches, and society. This booklet is intended to be both practical and polemical; for women, laymen, and theologians; and as a contribution to the battle of loving patriarchy against the increasing egalitarianism in modern societies which does so much harm to women. God uniquely created women for special ministries. These ministries include submission, modesty, quietness, affection, and chastity. Such service is like the precious ointment Mary of Bethany poured on the head and feet of Jesus. Women have performed some of the greatest spiritual works of all time. Only a woman believed Jesus when he said he was going to die, and she anointed him for his burial (Mt. 26:12-13). And only a woman was given the privilege, not merely of being the first to see Jesus after his resurrection, but of seeing him before he even ascended to the Father (Jn. 20:16-18). I think you’ll see from these chapters, that I strongly believe in “giving HONOR unto [woman], as unto the weaker vessel,” 1 Pet. 3:7. I also try to interpret the Bible according to “the law of kindness,” Prov. 31:26.

We invoke Christ at the wedding then seem to default to an alien theology afterward. In this simple and practical book, Doug Wilson offers a richer and more comprehensive theology of marriage than in his prior works. Here he grounds marriage in the life of the Trinity and in the life of the church. Marriage is intended to be a glorious picture of the gospel, and marriages grounded elsewhere regularly create a small hell on earth. Don't miss the riches of marriage.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In just a few short years, massive shifts in public opinion have radically reshaped society’s views on homosexuality. Feeling the pressure to forsake long-held beliefs about sex and marriage, some argue that Christians have historically misunderstood the Bible’s teaching on this issue. But does this approach do justice to what the Bible really teaches about homosexuality? In this timely book, award-winning author Kevin DeYoung challenges each of us—the skeptic, the seeker, the certain, and the confused—to take a humble look at God’s Word. Examining key biblical passages in both the Old and New Testaments and the Bible’s overarching teaching regarding sexuality, DeYoung responds to popular objections raised by Christians and non-Christians alike—offering readers an indispensable resource for thinking through one of the most pressing issues of our day.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever wondered why Christian women, just two or three generations ago, often wore some type of covering on their heads while in church? -- And why men always took off their hats when it was time to pray? It is well-documented throughout Church history that the use of headcoverings was the norm for Christian women during times of prayer. Additionally, the widespread practice for Christian men -- since the beginning of the Church -- has been to remove their hats whenever they gathered for prayer. Among the churches in Western society, these practices have greatly declined (and often ceased) only within the last century. The Bible itself provided for the longevity of these symbolic actions. In the book of First Corinthians, the Apostle Paul explained the meaning of the unique practice of Christian headcovering. Countless pastors, theologians, and other Christians throughout history have studied (and written about) Paul's instructions about headcovering. "Headcovering Throughout Church History" provides an overview of the Church's response to 1 Corinthians 11:2-16 across the last 2000 years of Christianity. It features the writings of the Early Church, Augustine, Martin Luther, John Bunyan, Charles Spurgeon, and many others. It also documents contemporary theologians & denominations that endorse the Church's historical stand on this passage of Scripture. Now in Kindle format, this book contains the most comprehensive research currently available on the topic. Carefully referenced quotations allow you to hear from well over 50 theologians, pastors, and other Christian writers throughout Church history. __________________ = = Book Excerpts = = "A man ought not to have his head covered, since he is the image and glory of God. But the woman is the glory of man... Therefore the woman ought to have a symbol of authority on her head... We have no other practice, nor have the churches of God." // The Apostle Paul, 1st Century AD “Indeed, the man's head ought not to be hidden, for the glory of God is seen in the man. A woman ought to cover her head in church out of reverence.” // Ambrosiaster, 4th Century AD "A woman praying in church without her head covered brings shame upon her head, according to the word of the Apostle... [and] the Apostle forbids men to pray in Church with covered head.” // Synod of Rome, 8th Century AD “It pertains to a man's dignity not to wear a covering on his head, to show that he is immediately subject to God; but the woman should wear a covering to show that besides God she is naturally subject to another.” // Thomas Aquinas, 13th Century AD “No man shall cover his head in the church or chapel.” // The Church of England, 17th Century AD “During my high school years, I never saw a woman in my mainline church whose head wasn't covered with a hat or a veil. That is one of those customs that has simply disappeared for the most part from Christian culture.” // R.C. Sproul (contemporary pastor & theologian) “It is only in the past three or four decades [since the 1960's] that its observance has slipped away — particularly in Western society.” // Mary Kassian (professor, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Should women teach men? Should they exercise authority over men? What about ordaining women? Even those who agree that Scripture must determine our answers do not agree on what it teaches. And too often differing sides have not been willing to listen to one another. Here in ove volume are the views of four deeply commited evangelicals that focus the discussion on the issues. Robert Culver argues for what might be called the traditional view that women should not exercise authority over or teach men. Susan Foh suggests a modified view which would allow for women to teach but not to hold positions of authority. Walter Liefeld presents a case for plural ministry that questions ordination as a means of conferring authority. Alvera Mickelsen defends the full equality of men and women in the church. What makes this book especially helpful is that the writers all respond to the other essays, pointing out weaknesses and hidden assumptions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At age twenty, Saloma Miller left behind her Amish community in Burton, Ohio, and boarded a night train for Vermont, where she knew no one. In this poignant coming-of-age memoir, Saloma’s new life of freedom includes work as a waitress and plans to continue her education. Romance also blossoms with a Yankee toymaker. Soon, however, a vanload of people from her community, including the Amish bishop, arrive to take her back into the fold. Saloma’s freedom comes to an abrupt end when she goes back home to Ohio with them. Thus begins a years-long struggle of feeling torn between two worlds: will she remain Amish and embrace the sense of belonging and community her Amish life offers, or will she return to the newfound freedom she tasted in Vermont? Saloma settles into teaching in an Amish school and does her best to fit back into Amish ways, but a legacy of childhood abuse, struggles with an eating disorder, and questions of identity plague her. Her ties to the outside world remain, mostly through the quiet perseverance of the toymaker from Vermont. He keeps sending her cards, never giving up hope that their love could survive the strain of living in two different worlds. Bonnet Strings by Saloma Miller Furlong offers a universal story of overcoming adversity and a rare look inside an Amish community. Readers of Amish fiction and viewers of the PBS documentaries such as The Amish and The Amish: Shunned will find in it a true story: of woundedness and healing, of doubt and faith, and of the often competing desires for freedom and belonging.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are created man and woman in the image of God. And we are called to worship our Creator in the beauty of holiness. Discover the ancient and Scriptural practice that reveals what it means to be men and women in grace. Edgerton explores Saint Paul's teaching, found in 1 Corinthians 11, that men ought to pray and prophesy with heads uncovered while women ought to do so with heads covered. Is this an archaic - and possibly sexist - practice we are best to leave to history, or is this a commandment which Christians are obligated to obey? Moving beyond arguments from culture and patriarchy to the biblical and theological foundations of the tradition, this book offers a moving case for its continuance in our parishes today. This study addresses the implications of head covering for the relationships between men and women, husbands and wives, clergy and laity. The Corinthians passage is allowed to shed light as well on the debates concerning the ordination of women to priesthood. Above all, the reader will find the practice of head covering to be rooted in worship rather than inequality. These issues are explored from a Reformed Catholic perspective that rests on the authority of Scripture, consults Church history, and links theology to worship and discipleship as well as pastoral care. This study serves as a resource for clergy and laity alike and as a call to godly worship on the part of Christians of both genders.
