Book excerpt: Civil Avionics Systems, Second Edition, is an updated and in-depth practical guide to integrated avionic systems as applied to civil aircraft and this new edition has been expanded to include the latest developments in modern avionics. It describes avionic systems and potential developments in the field to help educate students and practitioners in the process of designing, building and operating modern aircraft in the contemporary aviation system. Integration is a predominant theme of this book, as aircraft systems are becoming more integrated and complex, but so is the economic, political and technical environment in which they operate. Key features: • Content is based on many years of practical industrial experience by the authors on a range of civil and military projects • Generates an understanding of the integration and interconnectedness of systems in modern complex aircraft • Updated contents in the light of latest applications • Substantial new material has been included in the areas of avionics technology, software and system safety The authors are all recognised experts in the field and between them have over 140 years’ experience in the aircraft industry. Their direct and accessible style ensures that Civil Avionics Systems, Second Edition is a must-have guide to integrated avionic systems in modern aircraft for those in the aerospace industry and academia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of technologies to modify natural human physical and cognitive performance is one of increasing interest and concern, especially among military services that may be called on to defeat foreign powers with enhanced warfighter capabilities. Human performance modification (HPM) is a general term that can encompass actions ranging from the use of "natural" materials, such as caffeine or khat as a stimulant, to the application of nanotechnology as a drug delivery mechanism or in an invasive brain implant. Although the literature on HPM typically addresses methods that enhance performance, another possible focus is methods that degrade performance or negatively affect a military force's ability to fight. Advances in medicine, biology, electronics, and computation have enabled an increasingly sophisticated ability to modify the human body, and such innovations will undoubtedly be adopted by military forces, with potential consequences for both sides of the battle lines. Although some innovations may be developed for purely military applications, they are increasingly unlikely to remain exclusively in that sphere because of the globalization and internationalization of the commercial research base. Based on its review of the literature, the presentations it received and on its own expertise, the Committee on Assessing Foreign Technology Development in Human Performance Modification chose to focus on three general areas of HPM: human cognitive modification as a computational problem, human performance modification as a biological problem, and human performance modification as a function of the brain-computer interface. Human Performance Modification: Review of Worldwide Research with a View to the Future summarizes these findings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mobile display industry has witnessed rapid growth, in both volume and diversification, in recent years. This trend is expected to persist with continued consumer demand for mobile communications and computing applications. Mobile displays are now integral to a wide range of devices such as MP3 players, digital cameras, PDAs, GPS map readers, portable DVD players, and electronic books, as well as the ubiquitous mobile phone and laptop computers. This proliferation of products has fuelled a significant investment into the research and development of the mobile display, with key research laboratories across the display industry and academia producing many exciting technological advancements. With contributions from well-known experts, in both industry and academia, this book presents a comprehensive coverage of the mobile display in a single volume. Ranging from an in-depth analysis of the requirements that the displays must meet, through current devices, to emerging technologies, the text features: mobile environment and human-factor considerations for the display; advances in the incumbent active matrix liquid crystal display (AMLCD) technologies; backlighting and light manipulation techniques; mobile display driver electronics and interface technologies; emerging technologies including active matrix organic light emitting diode (AMOLED), electronic paper displays, and system-on-glass (SOG) developments; application developments in eyewear, mobile projector, and 3D displays. Mobile Displays: Technology and Applications presents, in addition to the fundamentals, a detailed update on state-of-the-art advancements. It is an invaluable resource for practicing electronics and display engineers working on the development of mobile displays and their applications. It is also an extensive reference for graduates taking special courses in display technologies. The Society for Information Display (SID) is an international society, which has the aim of encouraging the development of all aspects of the field of information display. Complementary to the aims of the society, the Wiley-SID series is intended to explain the latest developments in information display technology at a professional level. The broad scope of the series addresses all facets of information displays from technical aspects through systems and prototypes to standards and ergonomics
