Book excerpt: "La Trina Neal has a special gift that is both inspirational and insightful. Her accomplishment of documenting her experiences is just the tip of her abilities and discernment. The experiences she writes about in this book cannot begin to describe the depth of her humility and strength. Walking the walk of faith requires much courage and servitude. Both of these traits are exhibited in her life...I am inspired by her light." -Dwight Radcliff Director of Operations, U.S. Vets, Inc (Inglewood, CA.) He Gave Me Shelter is an affecting and poignant story of a young woman whose dreams were derailed when circumstances forced her into a homeless shelter. Faced with the challenges of getting her life back on track, La Trina finds herself negotiating with the colorful and troubled personalities of the other residents. While settling into a successful routine, a crisis at the shelter forces her into the role of resident manager and, eventually, executive director. Through this animated and emotionally charged tale, the author provides a guided tour of this too-often unseen world, while giving voice to the homeless and dignity to their daily struggles. A portion of the proceeds from book sales will benefit homeless advocacy groups and organizations.

Then a man named Ramesh entered her life who treated her with respect and gave her true love. Unfortunately their love did not last when he was brutally murdered by a native impi for being in the wrong place. Book excerpt: What do you do when a nuclear weapon detonates nearby? During the early Cold War years of 1945-63, Civil Defence Canada and the Emergency Measures Organization planned for just such a disaster and encouraged citizens to prepare their families and their cities for nuclear war. By the time of the Cuban Missile Crisis, the civil defence program was widely mocked, and the public was vastly unprepared for nuclear war. Canada’s civil defence program was born in the early Cold War, when fears of conflict between the superpowers ran high. Give Me Shelter features previously unreleased documents detailing Canada’s nuclear survival plans. Andrew Burtch reveals how the organization publicly appealed to citizens to prepare for disaster themselves -- from volunteering as air-raid wardens to building fallout shelters. This tactic ultimately failed, however, due to a skeptical populace, chronic underfunding, and repeated bureaucratic fumbling. Give Me Shelter exposes the challenges of educating the public in the face of the looming threat of nuclear annihilation. Give Me Shelter explains how governments and the public prepared for the unexpected. It is essential reading for historians, policymakers, and anybody interested in Canada’s Cold War home front.

Book excerpt: The serene life of the irrepressibly optimistic little girl was disturbed. Child-play and fantasies gave way to fear and anguish. Wild thoughts were going through her mind while the German bombs were falling nearby her picturesque retreat: How dare they disturb my peaceful space? Who are these people who want to conquer the world? Why aren't they satisfied with their own terra firma, their own hideaways and retreats, their own Camelot? Why would they bother my magical surroundings and the environment of all the other children of other lands? Don't they have dreams, other than destroy other people's dreams? Weren't they ever children themselves, or better yet, don't they have children of their own? Don't they know that, above all, children need to feel safe and secure, warm and loved? Only three chapters were completed with the anticipation that the conclusion of this book would be optimistic and cheerful, along with the fervent wish that never again would children have live through the horrors of war and its dreadful consequences. The dreadful morning of September 11, 2001, however, changed the mood of us all. The devastation of the horrific events in New York, Washington D.C., and Pennsylvania will haunt us forever.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholars of popular Hindu religion in India have always been fascinated by oral texts and rituals, but surprisingly only few attempts have as yet been made to analyse the relationship between rituals and texts systematically. This book contributes to the filling of this gap. Focusing on the dynamics of a local (non-Brahmanical) ritual, its modular organisation and inner logic, the interaction between narrative text and ritual, and the significance of the local versus translocal nature of the text in the ritual context, the study provides a broad range of issues for comparison. It demonstrates that examining texts in their context helps to understand better the complexity of religious traditions and the way in which ritual and text are programmatically employed. The author offers a vivid description of a hitherto unnoticed ritual system, along with the first translation of a text called the Icakkiyamman-Katai (IK). Composed in the Tamil language, the IK represents a substantially longer and embellished form of a core versio which probably goes as far back as the seventh century C.E. Unlike the classical source, this text has been incorporated into a living tradition, and is being constantly refashioned. A range of text versions have been encapsulated in the form of a conspectus, which will shed light on the text's variability or fixity and will add to our knowledge of bardic creativity. Includes a film by the author on DVD.
