Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new historical study sheds light on the life and times of the Prophet's wife Ayesha. Scholar and author Atika Sadeeqa wants to show you the true Ayesha. This inspirational new biography draws on historical sources to describe Ayesha's background, personality, and work as the wife of the Prophet. At the same time, it addresses the controversy surrounding the question of Ayesha's age at the time of her marriage. Sadeeqa cuts through the noise surrounding the debate and examines the one historical report that so many scholars have relied on for centuries. She not only proves that the report is an unreliable source of information but also reveals the real woman behind all the arguments. Ayesha isn't simply the focus of an intellectual dispute; she was a real person who inspired her own community and all the generations that followed. Ayesha comes to life in the pages of Sadeeqa's work. Sadeeqa presents a portrait of a pious, devout woman who was always looking for ways to help others and strengthen their faith. Hazrat Ayesha Siddiqa follows Ayesha's legacy through the ages and shows what a light she was-and still is-to millions of believers.

Book excerpt: In 1984, the Islamic Government of Pakistan ignored fundamental Islamic decorum by depriving Ahmadi Muslims many of their basic human rights including religious freedom. In an attempt to justify this action, the Government of Pakistan published a so-called White Paper under the title Qadiyaniyyat — Islam kay liyay Sangin Khatrah (Qadiyaniyyat—A Grave Threat to Islam). Although there was nothing new in this so-called White Paper—the objections in which had already been thoroughly refuted in Ahmadiyya Jama‘at literature—Hazrat Mirza Tahir Ahmad Khalifatul-Masih IV((rh), the then Imam of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama‘at, replied to these allegations in a series of sermons. These sermons (in Urdu) were published by the London Mosque in 1985 and the English translation is now being published. Hazrat Mirza Tahir Ahmad delivered this sermon on April 7, 1985 as the concluding speech of the Annual Conference of Jama‘at Ahmadiyya UK. It details the profound insight and conviction that the Promised Messiah(as) had in Khatm-e-Nubuwwat. By citing extensively from reputable sources throughout Islamic history, he demonstrates that the Ahmadiyya belief in Khatm-e-Nubuwwat is fully consistent with the consensus of the Companions(ra) of the Holy Prophet(sa) and the views held by respected Muslim scholars and authorities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation. In the aftermath of 9/11 Islamic seminaries or madrasas received much media attention in India, mostly owing to the alleged link between madrasa education and forms of violence. Yet, while ample information on madrasas for boys is available, similar institutions of Islamic learning for girls have for the greater part escaped public attention so far. This study investigates how madrasas for girls emerged in India, how they differ from madrasas for boys, and how female students come to interpret Islam through the teachings they receive in these schools. Observations suggest that, next to the official curriculum, the 'informal' curriculum plays an equally important role. It serves the madrasa's broader aim of bringing about a complete reform of the students' morality and to determine their actions accordingly. Taking the misunderstandings and defamation about her into consideration, Aisha needs to be understood correctly. This study by Dr Resit Haylamaz, an expert on the life of the Prophet and his leading Companions, reflects her life in various aspects based on reliable reports. The book clarifies her critical role at establishing the Islamic teaching, with particular reference to her role in the transmission of private matters concerning women and marital relations, as well as recording the authentic sayings of the Prophet. As her sensitivity at practicing religion is related in a rich variety of examples, much disputed issues like her marriage age and her stance about Ali ibn Abi Talib are covered as separate topics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Islam's fourth caliph, Ali, can be considered one of the most revered figures in Islamic history. His nearly universal portrayal in Muslim literature as a pious authority obscures centuries of contestation and the eventual rehabilitation of his character. In this book, Nebil Husayn examines the enduring legacy of the nawasib, early Muslims who disliked Ali and his descendants. The nawasib participated in politics and scholarly discussions on religion at least until the ninth century. However, their virtual disappearance in Muslim societies has led many to ignore their existence and the subtle ways in which their views subsequently affected Islamic historiography and theology. By surveying medieval Muslim literature across multiple genres and traditions including the Sunni, Mu'tazili, and Ibadi, Husayn reconstructs the claims and arguments of the nawasib and illuminates the methods that Sunni scholars employed to gradually rehabilitate the image of Ali from a villainous character to a righteous one.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on insights from theoretical engagements with borders and subalternity, Beyond Religion in India and Pakistan suggests new frameworks for understanding religious boundaries in South Asia. It looks at the ways in which social categories and structures constitute the bordering logics inherent within enactments of these boundaries, and positions hegemony and resistance through popular religion as an important indication of wider developments of political and social change. The book also shows how borders are continually being maintained through violence at national, community and individual levels. By exploring selected sites and expressions of piety including shrines, texts, practices and movements, Virinder S. Kalra and Navtej K. Purewal argue that the popular religion of Punjab should neither be limited to a polarised picture between formal, institutional religion, nor the 'enchanted universe' of rituals, saints, shrines and village deities. Instead, the book presents a picture of 'religion' as a realm of movement, mobilization, resistance and power in which gender and caste are connate of what comes to be known as 'religious'. Through extensive ethnographic research, the authors explore the reality of the complex, dynamic and contested relations that characterize everyday material and religious lives on the ground. Ultimately, the book highlights how popular religion challenges the borders and boundaries of religious and communal categories, nationalism and theological frameworks while simultaneously reflecting gender/caste society.

Book excerpt: "And most certainly, thou (O Muhammad) are of most sublime and exalted character." (The Holy Qur’ân, 68:4) How the Topic Arose About ten years ago, a distant cousin of mine - Mr. Mohamed Mehtar Farooki gave me a typed quotation by the French historian, Lamartine. The quotation [A detailed exposition of the quotation will be found on page 38 ] purported to prove that Muhammad (pbuh), the prophet of Islam, was the greatest man that ever lived. Mr. Mehtar was in the habit of passing information on to me, believing that I might put the same to some good use at the proper time and place. Before this he had presented me with "The Call of the Minaret," an expensive book written by (Bishop Kenneth Cragg). By analysing this book I discovered the masterful deceit of the Christian Orientalists.
