Book Synopsis MOUNTAIN GEOMORPHOLOGY by : Phil Owens
Download or read book MOUNTAIN GEOMORPHOLOGY written by Phil Owens and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-02-04 with total page 477 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mountains represent one of the most inspiring and attractive natural features on the surface of the earth. Visually, they dominate the landscape. However, the increasing realization of the fragility of mountain areas because of changes in land use, management and climate, combined with an understanding of their importance for water and other natural resources, has resulted in a growing interest in mountain environments in recent years. Hence, Mountain Geomorphology represents a timely and unique contribution to the literature. Written by a team of international experts, this book is divided into three sections, which consider historical, functional and applied mountain geomorphology from both global and local perspectives. Historical mountain geomorphology focuses on the evolution of landforms. Functional mountain geomorphology emphasises the interaction between processes and landforms, while applied mountain geomorphology concerns the interrelationships between geomorphological processes and society. Mountain Geomorphology is a valuable source of information for students studying mountain geomorphology, and also for academics and research scientists interested in mountain environments.

Download or read book Geology and Geologic Hazards of Tooele Valley and the West Desert Hazardous Industry Area, Tooele County, Utah written by Bill D. Black and published by Utah Geological Survey. This book was released on 1999 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The petrographic database consists of 705 maceral analyses, reflectance measurements, and density and porosity determinations from Utah coal samples. These data were collected by the Utah Geological Survey from 1982 to 1995. Samples were collected from seven of Utah's 22 coal fields. Coal fields sampled are the Book Cliffs (182 samples), Wasatch Plateau (262 samples), Emery (41 samples), Sego (27 samples), Henry Mountains (173 samples), Kaiparowits Plateau (12 samples), and Coalville (four samples). The data are sorted by coal-field names; within each field the analyses are arranged alphabetically by coal-bed name to facilitate comparison. The aim of the database is to provide the industry with information on petrographic properties of Utah coals. In addition, it should help the coal operators and purchasers to determine the best uses for Utah coals.

Book excerpt: 'A truly enchanting book.'-"The New Yorker" 'The excitement, anxiety and hardships are slipped naturally into a story which conjures up pictures with the effortlessness of good and restrained writing.'-"The Times," London Written with Patterson's characteristic sharp wit and observation, "The Dangerous River" chronicles the year he spent battling the frigid temperatures and wild waters along the Nahanni in 1927. Patterson originally traveled to Canada's Northwest Territories with hopes of finding gold in the river and clues to the mysterious murder of a prospector. Instead, he fell in love with the landscape and through his meticulously recorded journals and hauntingly beautiful photographs he introduced the now-famous Nahanni River to the world. Included in this printing are Patterson's own black-and-white photographs, including the first photos to be taken of the falls of the Nahanni.
