Book excerpt: Reproductive success is the most important factor in beef cattle production and is affected by timing of pubertal onset in heifers, and reproductive biotechnologies utilized. Three studies were conducted to evaluate the effects of pubertal status, ADG, and 2 fixed time AI protocols on reproductive success in beef heifers. In the first study, heifers that were pubertal prior to breeding had a greater AI and overall pregnancy rate; produced more calves born within the first 21 d of the calving season; and weaned older, heavier calves than non-pubertal heifers. Additionally, heifers that had ≥2 estrous cycles, prior to the first breeding season, had a greater second season pregnancy rate than those heifers that had 0 or 1 estrous cycles prior to the first breeding season. In the second study, as ADG increased leading up to breeding the odds of attaining puberty increased for Gudmundsen Sandhills Laboratory heifers. For West Central Research and Extension Center heifers, as ADG increased the odds of puberty attainment decreased. Odds of pregnancy were affected by BW gain and pubertal status interaction; however, pubertal status had the greatest influence on increasing the odds of pregnancy. In the third study, 2 progestin-based fixed time AI protocols, MGA and 14-d CIDR, were compared to evaluate pregnancy rates. Fixed time AI pregnancy rate and final pregnancy rate was similar between MGA and 14-d CIDR. An economic analysis suggested synchronizing heifers with MGA was a more cost-effective treatment.

Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 34 (thesis year 1989) a total of 13,377 theses titles from 26 Canadian and 184 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 34 reports theses submitted in 1989, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book excerpt: The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effects of low input development protocols on Southeastern replacement beef females and their offspring. Fall and spring calving crossbred beef heifers managed through one of two heifer development programs (low input, LOW or conventionally developed, CON) were evaluated for metrics of uterine artery hemodynamics, patterns of heifer and offspring growth, postpartum reproductive performance, and economic efficiency. There were significant treatment × season (P = 0.0001) and season × day (P = 0.003) interactions on heifer body weight (BW) during gestation. There was a season × day interaction on total blood flow (TBF; P = 0.05) whereby TBF increased as gestation progressed and spring calving heifers displayed increased TBF. When adjusted for BW, an additional main effect of treatment was observed (P = 0.0007) in which LOW heifers had increased TBF compared to CON heifers. There were no significant main effects of treatment or season or interactions thereof on the proportion of females cycling at the start of the breeding season (P > 0.05). Additionally, there were main effects of treatment (P = 0.0095; P = 0.02) and season (P = 0.012; P = 0.007) on calf ADG and weaning weights, respectively whereby calves born to CON females grew faster than calves born to LOW heifers, and SPRING calves gained more rapidly than FALL calves. Partial budgeting demonstrated that LOW bred heifers were $250/hd less expensive to purchase than CON heifers due to lighter BW. Calves born to LOW females yielded $6.38 less per calf compared to CON calves. The discrepancy in reproductive efficiency coupled with the failure of LOW females to achieve BW similar to CON females resulted in a difference of $403/hd in average cull value between LOW and CON females in which CON females were worth more. Thus, CON females were $159.18 more profitable than LOW females when purchased as bred heifers and sold at the weaning of their first calf. In conclusion, though uterine artery BF was not negatively affected, low input heifer development resulted in sub-optimal heifer growth, poor first calf performance, and inadequate reproductive efficiency.

The objective of the first study was to determine if feedlot heifers administered melengestrol acetate (MGA) and growth promoting implants could serve as viable oocyte donors for in vitro embryo production. Ovaries from heifers administered MGA and growth promotants (MGA-Implant) and ovaries from heifers not administered either substance (Control) were collected from heifers post-slaughter. Oocytes were harvested and in vitro maturation, in vitro fertilization (IVF), and in vitro culture were completed. Treatment and time interacted to affect the number of oocytes aspirated per ovary (P = 0.07) and the number of zygotes per ovary (P = 0.07). Fertilization (P = 0.90) and cleavage rates (P = 0.80) did not differ between treatments. Blastocyst rates (P = 0.30) and the number of embryos per ovary (P = 0.50) did not differ between treatments. We concluded that beef feedlot heifers fed MGA and implanted with growth promotants seem to be a viable source of oocytes for in vitro embryo production. In the second study, we hypothesized that continuous fenceline exposure of prepubertal beef bulls to cycling beef females would hasten the onset of puberty as well as increase the percentage of bulls passing their initial breeding soundness examination (BSE). Bulls were either exposed to estrous females (exposed) or were not exposed (control). Monthly scrotal circumference (SC) measurements, blood samples, semen evaluations, and bull behavior assessments were conducted. Age at puberty (P = 0.40), SC at puberty (P = 0.50), and weight at puberty (P = 0.30) did not differ between treatments. A similar (P = 0.50) percentage of bulls passed their initial BSE at 363 ± 21.5 d of age (exposed: 87.8%; control: 74.2%). Treatment, month, and stage of the estrous cycle of cows interacted to affect the number of mount attempts (P = 0.05) and the number of flehmen responses (P

Book excerpt: Abstract: A series of experiments was designed to test the ability to induce precocious puberty in heifers and to determine the underlying mechanisms responsible for the precocious attainment of puberty. A model consisting of early weaning (3-4 months of age) and feeding a high-concentrate diet was used for each experiment. This method resulted in increased body weight gain. Additionally, precocious puberty was induced in a vast majority of heifers; and consequently, mean age at puberty was substantially reduced. Heifers that achieved precocious puberty did so at lesser body weights. In addition, subsequent estrous cycles continued after precocious attainment of puberty. In the first experiment, heifers that were weaned early and fed the high-concentrate diet exhibited a greater frequency of LH pulses leading to precocious attainment of puberty. In the second experiment, ovarian maturation was accelerated during the same period leading up to puberty. This was evidenced by increased maximum diameter of dominant ovarian follicles, increased duration of waves of ovarian follicular development, and increased peak estradiol concentrations during follicle waves. In the third experiment, estradiol-implanted, ovariectomized heifers that were weaned early and fed the high-concentrate diet escaped from estradiol negative feedback on LH secretion at a younger age, which was similar to the age at which ovary-intact heifers on the same diet attained puberty. It was concluded from these results that advancement of the decline in estradiol negative feedback on secretion of LH is the mechanism by which early weaning and feeding a high-concentrate diet induces precocious puberty in heifers. Essentially, the peripubertal period of development in heifers was shifted to a younger age with this model. A fourth experiment was conducted to determine the relative effects of timing of feeding the high-concentrate diet on age at puberty in early-weaned heifers. It was discovered that feeding the high-concentrate diet only for a period of 10 weeks after early weaning successfully advanced puberty to an extent similar to that of continuous feeding of the high-concentrate diet after early weaning. These experiments provide evidence that nutritional control during the early maturational period in heifers exerts substantial influence on timing of puberty.

Book excerpt: Factors Affecting Calf Crop summarizes the latest information available from leading cattle physiologists and geneticists regarding factors known to influence the production of live calves at weaning. You get practical information on management techniques for improving reproduction efficiency in the herd. You'll also learn about the functioning of the reproductive system and how this may affect reproductive processes in the cow herd. Managers will benefit from a clearer understanding of the factors known to limit efficient reproduction, while veterinarians and other professionals who advise cattlemen will appreciate the substantial reference material and color photographs for defining cow condition scores. Color photographs are also used to illustrate the discussions of testicular thermographies and their applications. Other chapters in the book cover developments in improving reproductive performance of the replacement heifer, the brood cow, and the bull. Topics on reproduction include physiology/endocrinology, the use of growth promotants, genetics and physiological and economic considerations in selecting the age to breed heifers, heritability of fertility, length of the breeding season, prepartum and postpartum nutrition, nursing by the calf, cloning of embryos, and much more.
