People are the problem, not the solution.” When Ransom Lawe, a recycler in the Pacific Northwest, discovers his wife is pregnant with their third—and therefore illegal child, he’s forced to choose between the government who proclaims a desire to save the planet and his hope for a place where his family can live in freedom. But with the Census Bureau Sentinels closing in on his wife and unborn child, Ransom’s choice will either save his family or tear them apart forever. Abel Keogh offers a stark and haunting look at the not-to-distant future in this chilling novel. Download or read book Poetry and Crisis written by Jill Robbins and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2019-12-12 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On March 11, 2004, Islamist terrorists carried out a massive bombing on Madrid’s largely working-class commuter trains, leaving 191 people dead and more than 1,500 others wounded. This event, known in Spain as 11-M, was the second of three highly visible jihadist attacks on the West between 2001 and 2005, and the first in Europe, occurring just days before the national elections in Spain. Arguing that 11-M marked a critical turning point in Spanish society, this book reveals how poetry played a unique role and reflected a new political and cultural sensibility defined by informal and non-hierarchical networks of communication and memorialization. After the attacks, poems circulated in public spaces in unexpected ways, creating links and relationships that were binding: they were inscribed on banners and monuments; musicalized in anthems, protest songs, and hip-hop music; reproduced on manifestos and blogs; sent by email and text; scribbled on scraps of paper and posted on walls; performed publicly; and painted as graffiti. These forms of expression also resonated strongly with Spanish poets who had already been exploring the possibilities of ethical engagement and aesthetic creation. Poetry and Crisis explores how this essentially poetic sensibility emerged from tragedy, laying the groundwork for similar kinds of affective and grassroots mobilization that continue to grow in Europe today.
Book Synopsis Mothercoin by : Elizabeth Cummins Muñoz
Download or read book Mothercoin written by Elizabeth Cummins Muñoz and published by Beacon Press. This book was released on 2022-05-03 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A historical and cultural exploration of the devastating consequences of undervaluing those who conduct the “women’s work” of childcare and housekeeping In taking up the mothercoin—the work of mothering, divorced from family and exchanged in a global market—immigrant nannies embody a grave contradiction: while “women’s work” of childcare and housekeeping is relegated to the private sphere and remains largely invisible to the public world, the love and labor required to mother are fundamental to the functioning of that world. Listening to the stories of these workers reveals the devastating consequences of undervaluing this work. As cleaners and caregivers are exported from poor regions into rich ones, they leave behind a material and emotional absence that is keenly felt by their families. On the other side of these borders, children of wealthier regions are bathed and diapered and cared for in clean homes with folded laundry and sopa de arroz simmering on the stove, while their parents work ever longer hours, and often struggle themselves with these daily separations. In the US, many of these women’s voices are silenced by language or fear or the habit of powerlessness. But even in the shadows, immigrant nannies live full and complicated lives moved by desire and loss and anger and passion. Mothercoin sets out to tell these stories, recounting the experience of Mexican and Central American women living and working in the private homes of Houston, Texas, while also telling a larger story about global immigration, working motherhood, and the private experience of the public world we have all created.
Book Synopsis The Victims of the Sage by : Claude Stephenson
Download or read book The Victims of the Sage written by Claude Stephenson and published by CLAUDE STEPHENSON. This book was released on 2007-06 with total page 583 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No man has a copyright on love, hope, and dreams! Zane Grey made the setting of this novel famous in his Riders of the Purple Sage. He wrote about a world that never existed, of feats that were impossible, and he missed the real people who lived and died trying to tame this wild plain of sage brush. Over 60 years ago, I roamed these hills and valleys, visited the ruins of houses and the graves that always were near by. I visited the local Indians and became friends with them, ate with them, and we befriended each other. The Indian grave yard I describe is real, right down to the four inch friendship vase that still held the stems of flowers hundreds of years after they were put there. As a boy, I helped excavate a number of ruins, mostly places that had been burned to the ground. From those excavations, we learned of the people who had lived in those houses. In two out of three of the places excavated by my team, the bodies of the settlers who used to occupy those cabins before they were burned were buried not more than 50 yards from their house of dreams. The Anastasia also dreamed, long before the white men came. They tried to conquer and farm this same land. When life came to its end, they still had a dream of a new day. All their graves are placed on a hill top on the west rim of a mile deep canyon, with the feet of the deceased pointing to the east, waiting for the rising sun of the new world in where there will be no sorrow, pain, war, or suffering. If that sounds familiar, remember it was from a people who lived there a thousand years before the white man came here. Does any man have a copyright on dreams of a better tomorrow? It is as old as mankind. Mr. Stephenson began writing for hire while in college. For years, he wrote technical books for university or corporate use. One year, he wrote over 40 books. His secretary said she did not count them unless they were an inch thick! He has published over sixty articles in professional magazines, several poems and a short story. In the past year, he has written a biography which he is considering publishing as well as this western novel placed in the 1870s in the badlands of Colorado and Utah. He is married to Anna-Mae. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2005 in Hawaii. He owns a business insurance brokerage that serves the building and manufacturing industries of Southern California.
Book Synopsis Transmovimientos by : Ellie D. Hernández
Download or read book Transmovimientos written by Ellie D. Hernández and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2021-06 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within a trans-embodied framework, this anthology identifies transmovimientos as the creative force or social mechanism through which queer, trans, and gender nonconforming Latinx communities navigate their location and calibrate their consciousness. This anthology unveils a critical perspective with the emphasis on queer, trans, and gender nonconforming communities of immigrants and social dissidents who reflect on and write about diaspora and migratory movements while navigating geographical and embodied spaces across gendered and racialized contexts, all crucial elements of the trans-movements taking place in the United States. This collection forms a nuanced conversation between scholarship and social activism that speaks in concrete ways about diasporic and migratory LGBTQ communities who suffer from immoral immigration policies and political discourses that produce untenable living situations. The focal point of analysis throughout Transmovimientos examines migratory movements and anti-immigrant sentiment, homophobia, and stigma toward people who are transgender, immigrants, and refugees. These deliberate consciousness-based expressions are designed to realign awareness about the body in transit and the diasporic experience of relocating and emerging into new possibilities.
