Based on practical field experience, this breakthrough book gives a full account of training and hunting procedures, and takes a close look at the quarries a golden eagle can currently be flown to. Full of breathtaking photographs and insightful description, the book is sure to be enjoyed by anyone wishing to explore the eagle's role within falconry throughout the centuries. My purpose in writing this small book is to try to give an insight into hawking with golden eagles. These raptors have frequently been described in less-than-glowing terms and their value as modern day falconry birds questioned. This book will attempt to paint a more positive picture. Naturally, when flown under unsuitable conditions and handled by inexperienced falconers, golden eagles will give a poor account of themselves. But, if trained and flown correctly, these eagles can be employed very effectively by the contemporary falconer and provide him with a unique hawking experience. My own understanding and appreciation of the golden eagle owes little to my early British falconry background. Far more influential have been my central European experiences. I have spent a good deal of time living and hawking on the Continent. There, my involvement with three large falconry center has resulted in me being presented with opportunities seldom afforded the private individual; and, with Germany or Austria serving as a base, I have traveled widely and hunted with golden eagles in many different parts of Europe. In writing this book, I have assumed that those interested in hawking with golden eagles will already have a background of experience with birds such as goshawks, Harris' hawks, or red-tailed hawks. Let me stress that a golden eagle is definitely no bird for a novice falconer. With this in mind, I deemed it unnecessary to cover very basic falconry topics in any detail. Comments on the more rudimentary aspect of the sport have been restricted to where I feel they are truly required. I have written very much with the practicing falconer in mind. However, I have also tried to produce a text that will be found readable and informative by those perhaps not directly involved in practical falconry, but who have an interest in some related topic. It is hoped that this book will be of value to anyone keen to discover just what these magnificent birds are capable of as trained hunting allies.

Book excerpt: The Limited Edition is limited to 50 signed and numbered copies. Each is leather-bound and comes in a slipcase covered with bonded leather. The spine has five hubs (horizontal ridges beneath the leather to simulate the bundles of thread that, in medieval times, were used to sew signatures together). An eagle feather was hand-painted on the spine. An original watercolor painting of an eagle's head accompanies each copy (and is removable for framing). The pages are guilt-edged, and a medallion (of fine zinc plated with copper, then nickel, then gold) of an eagle in flight is embossed into the leather cover of the book. The medallion was sculpted by the noted artist, Mark Rossi, especially for the book. Because the painted feather and the painted eagle head (both by Dr. Ellis), are each unique, each copy is also unique.

Book excerpt: For the first time under one cover, the author has assembled the results of the renewed interest, extensive experimentation, and technological progress that have advanced falconry over the past three decades. The Hunting Falcon is a fresh approach to the sport of falconry. For the first time under one cover, the author has assembled the results of the renewed interest, extensive experimentation, and technological progress that have advanced falconry over the past three decades. Falconer and wildlife biologist, Bruce Haak, details the techniques for training falcons in the classical, game hawking style. Through well-defined chapters, he establishes the fundamentals of care and handling of captive falcons and legal means of acquiring them. Successful strategies for hawking a wide variety of North American quarry are analyzed and laced with entertaining and informative anecdotes. Time-honored techniques for training wild falcons are restated in modern terms. In addition, the education of imprinted and captive-bred falcons, classes of falcons without historical precedence, is concisely outlined for the reader. In a break with tradition, the author uses North America's only indigenous falcon, the prairie falcon, as the primary subject and promotes it as an outstanding hunting partner. His training philosophy and comments on the use of radiotelemetry are added enrichment's to the text.

This Sport of Kings uniquely offers falconers a chance to see hawks, falcons and eagles do what they were created to do - chase wild quarry. Additionally, falconers do more than simply observe hawks hunting; they actively participate in the adventures. Those adventures and the bonds formed with the birds of prey prompted this book. A Sophisticated Form of Hawk Watching is a collection of falconry stories showing many aspects of how falconers practice this ancient sport in the modern age. These stories cover a broad spectrum of experiences and emotions falconers encounter in this sport: Joy, excitement, fear, pain, satisfaction, anticipation, relief, laughter and love all flow from our relationships with these wonderful creatures. The 25 chapters share stories of young love, sheer bravery, companionship, loss, jackrabbit hawking, dog attacks, hawk trapping, field meets, dilemmas, conservation and much more. Some historical firsts are detailed too including: the invention of car-hawking, and the creation of removable anklets - that are now used around the world and featured in most falconry supply catalogs. Unique raptor writings also appear in these pages such as: a historical fiction piece of Genghis Khan hunting with golden eagles, spring raptor trapping and banding at Whitefish Point, a history-making rescue of a bald eagle with West Nile Virus and several zany dog stories in "Terrier Dreams." Other notable stories include: - "A Falconry Parable," sharing humorous insights into all "species" of falconers, - The fun "Jackrabbit Rescue," story showing a falconer's respect and compassion for prey, - "On Wings Like Eagles," presenting Isaiah 40:31 from a falconer's unique viewpoint, - "Dialogue 101," detailing an interesting conversation with a not-so-casual onlooker, - "Hoodwinking," displaying a humorous take on hood-making, and - "Animal Rights - Christian Morals," tackling a presumed conflict between Christian principles and hunting. Some of the chapters are updated from previously published articles and many stories are new works, such as "Fine Weather for Squirrels." These stories give you the inside look at a falconer's joys, trials and adventures. Enjoy the journey.
