Book excerpt: This report is the result of an investigation of the suitability of reinforced concrete as a structural and hull material for use in large floating platforms. History, materials, methods, and quality control requirements are reviewed. The findings support the conclusion that high quality concrete is acceptable and economical for application to large floating platforms, and that both design and quality control requirements can be met within the present state of the concrete art.

Download or read book Hydrogen Energy written by T. Veziroglu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are three important problems facing the world: deple tion of fossil fUels, demand for more energy, and the pollution of our environment. The world contains limited amounts of fossil fuels. They are being depleted, at an ever-growing rate. Peoples of the world are demanding more and more energy. This is due to the desires of peoples to improve their standard of living--and the standard of living is directly proportional to the energy con sumed. In addition, the world is demanding a cleaner environment to live in. Many of us, scientists and engineers, believe that replacing fossil fuels with the inexhaustible and clean synthetic fuel, hydrogen (produced from non-fossil primary sources of energy) will answer the above problems. Hydrogen, as the fUel of the post-fossil-fUel era, was pre dicted more than a hundred years ago by that great forecaster of the future, Jules Verne, in his novel The Mysterious Island: Water decomposed into its primitive elements, and decom posed doubtless by electricity, which will then have become a powerful and manageable force. • • . Yes, my friends, I believe that water will one day be employed as fuel, that hydrogen and oxygen, which constitute it, used singly or together, will furnish an inexhaustible source of heat and light of an intensity, of which coal is not capable •. •. I believe, then, that when the deposits of coal are exhausted, we shall heat and warm ourselves with water. Water will be the coal of the future.

Book Synopsis The Routledge Companion to Ecological Design Thinking by : Mitra Kanaani
Download or read book The Routledge Companion to Ecological Design Thinking written by Mitra Kanaani and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-08-31 with total page 836 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This companion investigates the ways in which designers, architects, and planners address ecology through the built environment by integrating ecological ideas and ecological thinking into discussions of urbanism, society, culture, and design. Exploring the innovation of materials, habitats, landscapes, and infrastructures, it furthers novel ecotopian ideas and ways of living, including human-made settings on water, in outer space, and in extreme environments and climatic conditions. Chapters of this extensive collection on ecotopian design are grouped under five different ecological perspectives: design manifestos and ecological theories, anthropocentric transformative design concepts, design connectivity, climatic design, and social design. Contributors provide plausible, sustainable design ideas that promote resiliency, health, and well-being for all living things, while taking our changing lifestyles into consideration. This volume encourages creative thinking in the face of ongoing environmental damage, with a view to making design decisions in the interest of the planet and its inhabitants. With contributions from over 79 expert practitioners, educators, scientists, researchers, and theoreticians, as well as planners, architects, and engineers from the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Asia, this book engages theory, history, technology, engineering, and science, as well as the human aspects of ecotopian design thinking and its implications for the outlook of the planet.
