Book excerpt: The year is 1793 and having suffered at the hands of Tonga's evil King Tui'puloto for too long, the Island Nations of the South Pacific are poised on the brink of civil war. When two heroic young warriors, Sevesi and Hiki, dare to challenge the King's absolute power, they incur his wrath, and only narrowly escape with their lives. The pair flee north, seeking sanctuary with the rebel tribes of Ha'apai. But instead of finding a safe haven, they are accused of being spies... Meanwhile, as the British and French continue their relentless quest to colonise the South Pacific, one of their ships is hijacked and strays off course, inadvertently dragging both Empires into the greatest tribal war the Pacific has ever known. As cultures collide, blood is shed, wrongs are righted and unlikely friendships are forged. Yet again, the British and French sorely underestimate the volatility and strength of their foes and the question remains: who will emerge as Lords of the Pacific? Lords of the Pacific is an unforgettable tale of love, revenge and war set in the one of the world's last great frontiers.

Book excerpt: Retired marine colonel "Red" Elwell is sent on government business to the island of Peleliu, the scene of one of the bloodiest battles of World War II. On the night of his arrival, he is ambushed in the jungle by a band of men and bayoneted to death. Elwell had been a war hero and a public figure, and the press swarms in from the four corners of the globe. Only one newsman remains to find out the truth behind the press handouts. Marshall Booker, "a master writer masquerading as a journalist," persuades Major Beckman, an anomaly among military men, to let him in on the manhunt. The search for the murderous band is complicated by the presence of other desperate men–commercial bone hunters, salvaging the remains of soldiers killed during World War II; stragglers from the Japanese Army who have never surrendered; ruthless politicians, both local native and American, vying for control of the people the riches of Peleliu; American government officials competing with Peace Corps members in their own struggle to control the island. In this highly inflammable situation, Marshall Booker unwittingly sets off a chain of events that plunges the island into turmoil and determines his own fate as well.

Book Synopsis Freedom of Analysis? by : Sylvia Blaho
Download or read book Freedom of Analysis? written by Sylvia Blaho and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2008-08-27 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume draws together papers that argue for a renewed focus on the role of hard constraints on phonological representations as well as the processes that operate on them. These are issues that have been sidelined since the shift in emphasis in phonological research to functionally grounded output-oriented constraints. Taking Optimality Theory as their starting point, the articles attack the question to what degree the Generator function Gen should be given freedom of analysis on three fronts. (1) What is the nature of the representations that Gen manipulates? Is a return to more articulated theories of segmental and prosodic representation desirable? (2) What restrictions might there be on the operations that Gen carries out on representations? Should Gen be endowed with structure-changing potential, as assumed in work couched within Correspondence Theory, or is a return to the principle of Containment preferable? Should Gen be restricted in the number of edits it can carry out at any one time? Should Gen be restricted to generating phonetically interpretable candidates? (3) What is the relationship between Gen and functionally arbitrary or opaque phonological patterns? Should Gen's freedom be restricted in order to account for language-specific phonology? The solutions offered to these questions bear significantly on current issues that are of fundamental concern in linguistic theory, including representations, parallelism vs. serialism, and the division of labour between linguistic modules. The authors scrutinize these issues using data from a variety of unrelated languages, including Czech, English, Greek, Haitian Creole, Hawaiian, Lardil, Spanish, Turkish, and Yowlumne.

Book Synopsis Asian Economic Integration Report 2018 by : Asian Development Bank
Download or read book Asian Economic Integration Report 2018 written by Asian Development Bank and published by Asian Development Bank. This book was released on 2018-10-01 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication is the annual report of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) on Asia's progress in regional cooperation and integration. It covers ADB's 48 regional members and analyzes regional and global economic linkages. This year's special chapter, "Toward Optimal Provision of Regional Public Goods in Asia and the Pacific," examines how collective action among countries can help find solutions to growing transnational development challenges. It discusses how to best provide regional public goods that transcend the so-called "collective action problem," which occurs when individual interests are too weak on their own to drive cooperation on common issues. The chapter suggests that multilateral development banks should act as honest broker in enhancing mutual trust and facilitating regional cooperation for regional public goods.
Book Synopsis Memories of War by : Suzanne Falgout
Download or read book Memories of War written by Suzanne Falgout and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2007-10-30 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Micronesians often liken the Pacific War to a typhoon, one that swept away their former lives and brought dramatic changes to their understandings of the world and their places in it. Whether they spent the war in bomb shelters, in sweet potato fields under the guns of Japanese soldiers, or in their homes on atolls sheltered from the war, Micronesians who survived those years know that their peoples passed through a major historical transformation. Yet Pacific War histories scarcely mention the Islanders across whose lands and seas the fighting waged. Memories of War sets out to the fill that historical gap by presenting the missing voices of Micronesians and by viewing those years from their perspectives. The focus is on Micronesian remembrances—the ritual commemorations, features of the landscape, stories, dances, and songs that keep their memories of the conflict alive. The inclusion of numerous and extensive interviews and songs is an important feature of this book, allowing Micronesians to speak for themselves about their experiences. In addition, they also reveal distinctively Micronesian cultural memories of war. Memories of War preserves powerful and poignant memories for Micronesians; it also demonstrates to students of history and culture the extent to which cultural practices and values shape the remembrance of personal experience.
