Book excerpt: The thing about lucid dreaming is, you’re playing a game against yourself. Against the inner workings of your own twisted mind. My friends always said I was my own worst enemy. It’s true. I am. I see it all around me. It’s chilling to be both the predator and the prey. But when you hunt yourself, who do you root for? I want nothing more than to stay in Baylor, but to win this fight, I’d have to let myself die. ★★★★★ "A dark psychological fantasy dive into the mind’s ability to create and control" --PT

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drama. Tragedy. Irony. Unsolved mysteries. And throw in a little greed. Beneath Haunted Waters is not a ghost story; it’s not that kind of “haunted” at all. These are waters haunted by generations of people who cannot forget the story of how two B-24 Liberator bombers disappeared in 1943 and what happened to the boys on board. During the World War II years, the convention was to call young men in their late teens to their late 20s, “boys.” The boys who piloted bombers and fighter aircraft during World War II were 19 or 20 years old - barely out of their childhood. Imagine boarding a 737 today and seeing a teenager at the controls instead of a person with greying temples. That was the situation during the war. Beneath Haunted Waters is a story about that era, when children flew large airplanes equipped with enough firepower to destroy cities. And yet, boys they were, and boys they will always be. But it’s primarily a story of how they died, not in combat, but by accident. During World War II the USA lost 7100 combat aircraft and 5300 trainers, along with 15,530 pilots, crew members, and ground personnel in over 52,000 domestic accidents. These statistics don’t compare to the huge numbers of RAF, 8th Air Force, and Luftwaffe losses during the European air war but the numbers are still frightening: Between 1942-1945, US aviation losses to accidents (12,400) exceeded combat losses (4500) to the Japanese. For every plane shot down in the South Pacific there were three lost to accidents within the United States. While memoirs of those who served, histories of military and political leaders, and books about combat abound, very little has been written about the terrible toll of aviation training accidents during the war. Beneath Haunted Waters is unique because it tells this hardly known and little appreciated story. Most information on this subject is covered in official reports. It appears in a casual way in many memoirs. There are a few histories of the air war during World War II that mention aviation accidents during training or once the boys were in theater. There has been no popular, academic, or comprehensive book on the subject. I propose to cover this subject within the more personal story of what happened to the two Liberators that wound up in Huntington Lake and Hester Lake. Usually, pilots and crews of World War II aircraft were neither old enough to vote nor to drink. Many had never driven a car or taken a train ride much less been in an airplane. Nine months after enlistment they were flying the most technologically advanced, high performance, machines ever built. The same could be said for their navigation equipment and radio gear. But aviation had been around for only 40 years! Aircraft design was still in its infancy. Engines failed, pilots flew into mountains, navigators got lost, radios broke, and weather forecasts were frequently and fatally wrong.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even though race influenced how Americans envisioned, represented, and shaped the American West, discussions of its history devalue the experiences of racial and ethnic minorities. In this lyrical history of marginalized peoples in Idaho, Robert T. Hayashi views the West from a different perspective by detailing the ways in which they shaped the western landscape and its meaning. As an easterner, researcher, angler, and third-generation Japanese American traveling across the contemporary Idaho landscape—where his grandfather died during internment during World War II—Hayashi reconstructs a landscape that lured emigrants of all races at the same time its ruling forces were developing cultured processes that excluded nonwhites. Throughout each convincing and compelling chapter, he searches for the stories of dispossessed minorities as patiently as he searches for trout. Using a wide range of materials that include memoirs, oral interviews, poetry, legal cases, letters, government documents, and even road signs, Hayashi illustrates how Thomas Jefferson’s vision of an agrarian, all-white, and democratic West affected the Gem State’s Nez Perce, Chinese, Shoshone, Mormon, and particularly Japanese residents. Starting at the site of the Corps of Discovery’s journey into Idaho, he details the ideological, aesthetic, and material manifestations of these intertwined notions of race and place. As he ?y-?shes Idaho’s fabled rivers and visits its historical sites and museums, Hayashi reads the contemporary landscape in light of this evolution.

Oh, and his snarky glow-in-the-dark dragon, Glo. But Isla was a professional. She could handle the two troublemakers. All she had to do was make sure a case didn't arise that required PADA involvement. But luck wasn't on Isla's side. When shop owner Felix Darrow is murdered, and the list of suspects is long, Jace and Isla must pair up once again to discover who killed the shifty antiques dealer. When the crime-solving pair discovers one of the stolen pieces might be the missing fertility stone they've been chasing, Isla immediately suspects the thief might be the mysterious woman she's glimpsed a handful of times on the beach. Or will the secrets of the haunted waters consume them first?

Book excerpt: These stories of coastal life come from days when the hardworking settlers who fished, hunted, ranched, and logged the west coast had to make their own entertainment. Back then daily life was dramatic enough that storytellers didn't have to exaggerate, but tales have a way of growing taller in a place where you have to be larger than life just to survive. In retelling these classic tales handed down by a master storyteller, Dick Hammond explores the shadowy territory between truth and myth: the handlogger who rows up to a dock in Egmont on evening with part of his leg - still in its boot - lying next to him on the stern seat; the deer tracks that mysteriously disappear in the middle of a snow-covered field; the mountain-shrouded homestead where a beautiful woman with eyes lika a cougar speaks of friends and family who may or may not be alive, or even real, all of whose voices can be heard in the Talking Falls. . . or can they? Dense with coastal lore, these captivating tales bear witness to a pioneer culture that mastered the art of wilderness survival, then faded away, leaving only ghosts and stories.

Hospitals are the nexus point between life and death, the place into which people enter this world, but also exit it. When we consider what has taken place behind the closed doors of hospitals since the inception of the medical profession, it should come as no surprise to discover that so many of them are haunted. In The World's Most Haunted Hospitals, paramedic and paranormal investigator Richard Estep recounts some of the most fascinating—and chilling—stories of hospital hauntings from across the globe, including: The apparitions at an old Utah hospital, now a nursing home, whose appearances are said to predict a patient's death. The Italian island referred to by locals as "the gateway to Hell," where the spirits of thousands of plague victims prowl the streets. The terrifying phenomena that keep visitors away from an abandoned airbase hospital in the Philippines. The ghostly nurse who has haunted the corridors of a London hospital for generations.
