Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Haunted Houses: Of England Wales IN selecting a series of ghost stories for this volume I have taken the greatest care to make use of those only which are thoroughly well authenticated. The result of this discrimination has been that the majority of these accounts of psychic phenomena have been taken from the lips of eye-witnesses and transferred to manuscript in as nearly as possible the narrator's own language. First-hand narratives of unfamiliar hauntings, albeit they refer to the meaner class of houses, will, I think, be more welcome to the reader than the mere repetition of such hackneyed stories as those appertaining to Glamis Castle, the Tower of London, &c. In one other point, too, this work may be said to differ from others dealing with the same subject viz., it is compiled and written by a very keen psychic - one who has not only investigated (and lectured on) haunted houses, but has himself seen many occult manifestations. As there have been several libel cases quite recently in connection with the alleged haunting of houses, I have been obliged (save where it is stated to the contrary) to give fictitious names to both people and localities. Book excerpt: "Borley Rectory was the house that gained infamy as "the most haunted house in England" after its ten-year-long paranormal investigation by the psychic researcher; Harry Price. Price dedicated his life to uncovering the truth behind the paranormal, leading him to become one of the most well-known psychical researchers of all time. It was his investigation into Borley Rectory which by far became the most famous case in Price's long career, eventually leading to the Victorian house being crowned the 'most haunted in England'. This book ... document[s] his ten-year investigation into exploring the nature of paranormal phenomena surrounding Borley Rectory. The rectory was attributed to classic poltergeist activity, wall-writing, mysterious fires and supernatural manifestations. Most notable of these is that of the figure of a nun, known for walking across the garden. Also appearing was a spectral carriage and team of horses driven by a headless coachman. It could be said that the story of Borley Rectory is as much a story of a haunted house and ghosts as it is about the living. Borley's saga includes sensationalist tabloid headlines, a scandalous affair and a captivating investigator whose discoveries are still questioned to this day"--Amazon.com.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from More Haunted Houses of London The whole system of education in England is rotten to the core. In training the young the brain only is taken into consideration, the character is left to take care of itself. So long as the boy is clever, so longi as he succeeds at his lessons, passes a high standard, and takes scholarships and degrees, and is, in a word, in a position to make money, that is all that those responsible for his education require of him. N 0 one 1 teaches him kindness, or gentleness, or humanity, because these are qualities that, under our present system, do not encourage money-making, but tend rather to retard it. Besides, how can we possibly impart to others what we do not possess ourselves. If character - that is to say, really good character character that is thoroughly humane and charitable were suddenly made the basis upon which our Cabinet Ministers, our pedagogues, and preachers should hold office, how many of those holding such offices to-day could be re-elected? Very few, if any. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “When I was between the ages of five and eight, my sister and I slept in a large attic bedroom. At nightfall the room was filled with gypsies who glided around in clusters. They wore colorful thin flowing dresses and rummaged greedily through my drawers and books as if they would steal everything. I lay in bed as stiff as a board, trying to will myself invisible, praying they would not notice me looking . . . Daylight obliterated the gypsies, rendering them as thoroughly insubstantial as they had been real in the dark. I had a vague understanding that my vision was private, so I never told my family what I saw.” So began Corinne May Botz’s fascination with the invisible, a phenomenon that has profoundly influenced her approach to photography in style and subject matter. For more than ten years, she searched for ghost stories in buildings across the United States. She ventured into these haunted places with both camera and tape recorder in hand; her photographs, accompanied by first-person narratives, reveal a rare glimpse into American interiors, both physical and psychological. This book includes more than eighty haunted buildings, from the legendary to the ordinary, including Edgar Allan Poe’s house in Baltimore, a New Jersey tavern, and a Massachusetts farmhouse, a log cabin in Kentucky, and a number of private residences. The text includes ghost stories told to the author by those who lived through the moving rugs, creaking floors, apparitions, disappearing—and reappearing—objects, cries in the night, mysteriously burning candles, and other unexplained occurrences.
