Download or read book From Dean to Dand written by Don Hathaway and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2020-11-05 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Dean to Dand follows the Hathaway patronymic from its inception in the Forest of Dean in Wales, when it was recorded in the Domesday Book. The family spread across England before crossing the Atlantic to the American colonies. One branch of the diaspora, the author’s ancestors, migrated north into Upper Canada and then west onto the Canadian prairies. The story traces that branch of the Hathaway family as one small thread in a tapestry woven from shifting political, social, and economic forces. Perhaps the real story in these pages is the tapestry and its story of the courage to face social, political and economic change, the energy and resourcefulness of those whose stories launched all of ours.
Book Synopsis FROZEN IN TIME: An Early Carte de Visite Album from New Bedford, Massachusetts by : Susan Snow Lukesh
Download or read book FROZEN IN TIME: An Early Carte de Visite Album from New Bedford, Massachusetts written by Susan Snow Lukesh and published by BookLocker.com, Inc.. This book was released on 2021-08-10 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Frozen in Time, Susan Snow Lukesh takes a mid-nineteenth century photo album from New Bedford, Massachusetts, created against an almost unmentioned backdrop of the Civil War, and moves the people seemingly frozen in time backwards and forwards, offering details of daily living, marrying, working, and dying of both the individuals whose portraits are included as well as their kin and colleagues. The details of daily living, of the marrying, working, and dying of the neighbors and kin in the photo album from New Bedford, demonstrate the personal side of the development of this famous whaling capital through its transition to a strong mill economy. These details also show how the financial and intellectual capital of the city fueled development throughout the United States. This album with its very small cast of neighbors and kin thus unfolds to offer a glimpse of the rich panorama of nineteenth-century New Bedford. The biographical sketches of the onstage and offstage players combined with the histories presented (of New Bedford, of nineteenth-century social media, and of the album itself) reveal a snapshot of New Bedford’s citizens, New Bedford’s history and industries, and, importantly, New Bedford’s part in the Civil War. Frozen in Time presents local history in the broader context of the United States and can be seen as well as an example of petite histoire – an account of particular households and neighborhoods, reminding readers of the continuing importance of both family and neighborhoods, real or virtual. The discussion of nineteenth-century social media also shows those in the twenty-first century that Facebook can be seen as old social media on a new platform. The photographs from the time of the Civil War underscore the arc of photography from its first use capturing images of war to its present use to record violence perpetuated on and perpetuated by police and others at home and around the world. Lukesh was entrusted with the family album that is the basis for Frozen in Time and used her experience in research, artifact interpretation, and writing to develop the narrative of the book. She hopes readers will take away the importance and value of both family and history, as well as the part of the family in history.

Book Synopsis The Wrights of Vermont: Searching for My Father's Family by : George T. Wright
Download or read book The Wrights of Vermont: Searching for My Father's Family written by George T. Wright and published by Wheatmark, Inc.. This book was released on 2013 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When my sister and brother and I were growing up on Staten Island, Dad told us very little about his Vermont boyhood, and nothing at all about his father. We respected his silence. We figured he had good reason for it. But long after Dad's death, my sister and I started to look more closely at our family history. Soon we were connected to a world of New England striving and struggle that we came to see as part of our own Vermont heritage. So this is the story of Dad and his mother and brother, and his unreliable father, and his father's five sisters, whom we'd known nothing about before we began our research. It pays tribute to an everyday heroine, Dad's mother, who took her sons to Staten Island to begin a new life when her marriage failed. It also traces earlier Wrights (and forebears with other surnames, like Little, Bailey, Hadley, Hathaway, Shattuck, Blanchard, and Burt) in towns all over Vermont (and New Hampshire and Massachusetts), some of them with their own compelling stories -- farmers, soldiers, railroad men, miners, housewives, and keepers of inns and hotels. These are my Wrights of Vermont.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Warren Buffett is a legend primarily for his investment philosophy. He isn’t concerned about the intricacies of the market, but instead focuses on the quality of the companies Berkshire Hathaway stands behind. Yet we know little about the leaders of the companies that Buffett handpicks. In Behind the Berkshire Hathaway Curtain: Lessons from Warren Buffett’s Top Business Leaders, author Ronald W. Chan — founder and CEO of Chartwell Capital — offers a behind-the-scenes look into the careers of Berkshire Hathaway executives who have both directly and indirectly contributed to the conglomerate’s success. Drawing on exclusive interviews from Berkshire leaders, Chan vividly describes how an exceptional group of managers has built a culture of achievement. With a keen eye for detail, he shows how their lessons can be applied for career success and personal fulfillment. Brimming with practical advice, the book will appeal to both executives and employees wanting to improve their leadership skills and work performance. Covering the career and life decisions of David Sokol of MidAmerican Energy, Cathy Baron-Tamraz of Business Wire, Dennis Knautz of Acme Brick, Randy Watson of Justin Brands, Stan Lipsey of Buffalo News, and many more, the book offers a wide range of business insights, philosophies, and strategies directly from leaders at the top of their fields.
