Book excerpt: A lively history of the Watch and Ward Society--New England's notorious literary censor for over eighty years. Banned in Boston is the first-ever history of the Watch and Ward Society--once Boston's unofficial moral guardian. An influential watchdog organization, bankrolled by society's upper crust, it actively suppressed vices like gambling and prostitution, and oversaw the mass censorship of books and plays. A spectacular romp through the Puritan City, here Neil Miller relates the scintillating story of how a powerful band of Brahmin moral crusaders helped make Boston the most straitlaced city in America, forever linked with the infamous catchphrase "banned in Boston."

When he discovered skateboarding, his life was changed forever. So how did Andy Macdonald go from death-defying stunts in his jolly jumper to world champion skateboarder? In his own words, Andy shares all the ups and downs and the spills and thrills, from driving to California in a broken-down car and dressing up as Shamu at Sea World to setting world records and giving a speech at the White House. He's traveled the world over with his skateboard under his arm. Andy's made the road to sweet, sweet success look easy. But this behind-the-scenes look takes you onto the platform of the vert ramp -- to the competitions, the long hours of practice, and more. It reveals a bumpy road to the top that, as Andy will tell you, could be reached only with the guts that skateboarding gave him.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lodging House Problem in Boston The lodging-house of any sort has claimed comparatively little attention in the literature of the housing question, and the room ing-house specifically has fared still worse. The only definition we have been able to find, outside the dictionaries, is the following: A lodging-house shall be taken to mean and include any house or building or portion thereof in which persons are harbored, or received, or lodged for hire, for a single night or for less than a week at one time, or any part of which is let for any person to sleep in for any term less than a week. 2 This is the definition given in the original New York tenement-house law of 1867 (chap. 908, sec. And it has been continued through all the subsequent acts with out change. It excludes the rooming-house, where the ordinary rental period is a week or a month, but which is commonly called a lodging-house, and in some cities is never called anything else. A definition so at variance with common usage is obviously defect ive, and may be positively misleading. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Occupy Wall Street was the most covered news story of 2011. Among those who followed the movement like a storm chaser, Boston Phoenix Staff Writer Chris Faraone is one of the few who blogged about daily Occupy minutiae, but also stepped back to smoke lots of weed, investigate and analyze the protest, and deliver weekly features. Starting in September, Faraone published a series of deep Occupy portraits, traveling to more than a dozen cities from Boston to Seattle. His work illustrates day-to-day Occupy operations, as well the characters who make the movement tick. In the process, he also landed nationwide exclusives, like a scoop on a federation of police officers who support Occupy. Though Faraone is to the left of liberal, he wrote with a balanced reporter's eye, in many cases aggravating readers on both sides of the ideological aisle. Ignoring partisan preferences, Faraone dug for the root of topics ranging from an accused thief who moved between camps, to a veteran anarchist who was inspired by Occupy to come out from underground. As was noted in a recent Columbia Journalism Review profile of Faraone, his approach to covering Occupy was wholly unique, as he became "a one-man swarm: embedding full-time at Boston's Dewey Square encampment; visiting other movements around the country; juggling feature stories, blog posts, radio spots, and Twitter fights." 99 Nights with the 99 Percent is a collection of Faraone's published posts and articles on Occupy, streamlined into a sleek edition that also packs unpublished pieces and a number of bonus features. In addition to pics and illustrations, a series of haiku poems - or "Occupaikus" - run throughout the book, taking readers through a timeline of the first 100 days of the national movement. There are other books on Occupy, but 99 Nights is in a category of its own.
