Book excerpt: "In recent years, the EU has co-financed e-commerce projects in the context of its cohesion policy with the support of the European Regional Development Fund. In this report, the European Court of Auditors assesses whether e-commerce projects were successful in supporting ICT uptake by SMEs by auditing a sample of EU co-financed e-commerce projects in Greece, Italy, Poland and the United Kingdom. The Court concludes that the ERDF support to e-commerce projects contributed to increasing the availability of business services online. However, it also concludes that shortcomings in the monitoring made it impossible to assess to what extent it contributed to the achievement of the EU and Member States' ICT strategies as well as SMEs' development objectives."--Page 4 of cover.

Book excerpt: European Business and Marketing is published at the beginning of the new millennium and incorporates much modern thinking in Europe. It includes material on the Euro and the enlargement of the European Union (EU) and the development of global companies with a European base. The text has been researched and written especially for students on undergraduate and postgraduate courses, who need to understand modern European marketing, the EU and the distinct features that are emerging in the world′s largest marketplace. The text includes chapters on marketing strategy in Europe and business culture. It also covers such issues as the expansion of the Union, the development of the Euro as a single currency, economic and monetary policy. The text looks at Europe holistically and builds on modern theoretical concepts to look at the present state of business in European and future trends. Book excerpt: The book brings together an international panel of experts on economic integration and international business to address the essential link between the two fields, namely the impact of integration processes on the business environment. Focusing on the European Union, it presents numerous examples and case studies to demonstrate how local business is becoming international business, and addresses the opportunities, constraints and overall historical changes. Starting with the regional and global economic integration framework, and subsequently exploring the institutional structure that makes everything possible and how the union came to be, the book reveals how the common policies of the EU impact businesses and entrepreneurship within both the common market and the member states. Readers will learn about the economic and political context that affect businesses in Europe; understand the basic concepts of integration, accompanied by cases and examples; gain a new perspective on important EU sectoral policies and challenges for individuals and businesses; become aware of the main challenges to EU enlargement; and better grasp the advantages and disadvantages of doing business in Europe in the present context.

With about 20 million such businesses, employing some 117 million people, SMEs represent an economic lynchpin to the success of the Single Market concept. This 6th report, from the Observatory, and prepared by a consortium led by KPMG Consulting, focuses on the economic and financial needs of SMEs. Specific chapters look at their products and services, the recruitment and training of staff, particulary vocational training, and their access to investment. The report is concluded with the set of policy recommendations, which are aimed at strengthening the entrepreneurial culture. These recommendations include: to provide more information on public procurement to SMEs; to promote further resarch on the impact of electronic commerce on the position of SMEs.

Book excerpt: This report by the European Union Committee examines the progress of the European Union in initiating a strategy for jobs and growth across the Community as a whole. The background to this report stems from the Spring European Council meeting in 2000, in Lisbon, and the launch of an economic reform agenda. The Committee observes that since the "Lisbon Agenda", little progress has been made and the performance of many of the larger European economies has been poor. The Committee has noted that certain worrying signs of protectionist behaviour have developed, especially regarding barriers of cross border mergers. The EU has recognized this weak performance and the Agenda was relaunched in 2005, with a greater focus on the key economic priorities of more growth and jobs. Also, all Member States are now required to produce an annual National Action Plan highlighting the policies being pursued to improve economic growth and increase employment. The Committee sets out a number of recommendations to further push forward the priorities of growth and jobs, including: that the Commission should seek to complete the progress towards an internal market; that Member States should influence one another in the development of good practice through statistical comparison of their economic progress, and agree on quantifiable targets; that the format of the National Action Plans should include not only the successes, but where countries are underperforming; that the Agenda be given a higher public profile.
