Book Synopsis American Harvest by : Marie Mutsuki Mockett
Download or read book American Harvest written by Marie Mutsuki Mockett and published by Graywolf Press. This book was released on 2020-04-07 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An epic story of the American wheat harvest, the politics of food, and the culture of the Great Plains For over one hundred years, the Mockett family has owned a seven-thousand-acre wheat farm in the panhandle of Nebraska, where Marie Mutsuki Mockett’s father was raised. Mockett, who grew up in bohemian Carmel, California, with her father and her Japanese mother, knew little about farming when she inherited this land. Her father had all but forsworn it. In American Harvest, Mockett accompanies a group of evangelical Christian wheat harvesters through the heartland at the invitation of Eric Wolgemuth, the conservative farmer who has cut her family’s fields for decades. As Mockett follows Wolgemuth’s crew on the trail of ripening wheat from Texas to Idaho, they contemplate what Wolgemuth refers to as “the divide,” inadvertently peeling back layers of the American story to expose its contradictions and unhealed wounds. She joins the crew in the fields, attends church, and struggles to adapt to the rhythms of rural life, all the while continually reminded of her own status as a person who signals “not white,” but who people she encounters can’t quite categorize. American Harvest is an extraordinary evocation of the land and a thoughtful exploration of ingrained beliefs, from evangelical skepticism of evolution to cosmopolitan assumptions about food production and farming. With exquisite lyricism and humanity, this astonishing book attempts to reconcile competing versions of our national story.

I still dont know if I was asleep or awake. All I remember is being in the presence of a being of tremendously massive power. I felt that my brain was dissolving inside my skull and I was melting from my head downward. I would have ended as a puddle on the ground if the presence had remained any longer. I was told three things: Its Harvest Time, and it was going to begin in Washington, DC. I would be living on the outskirts of Washington, DC. Get involved with food (I believe). I am presently living in Fort Washington, Maryland, on the outskirts of Washington, DC, and am very much involved with a volunteer organization having to do with food. I moved to the area in the summer of 1990.

Book Synopsis Harvest Time by : Martin Willitts Jr
Download or read book Harvest Time written by Martin Willitts Jr and published by . This book was released on 2021-04-18 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry. "Inside this collection are poems of great patience and attention. As Willitts writes, 'I fell into earth like seed' --so too does the reader, into a remarkable flow of poems. Each page is an act of deep listening, and an ache of nostalgia that is tethered to simplicity; heirlooms, spinning wool, and horseshoes --bringing to life the sacred, the connection to land and difficult work, love, anger, and questioning. Because time moves at the pace of lessons learned, true wisdom and beauty are able to shine through. Skilled with arrangement, Willitts is able to draw the reader into each poem as an experience, each carefully chosen word on the page like 'adding a pinch of salt to make things rise.' The finished product --'a waterfall / just before a river rushes to leap over.'" --Megan Merchant

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Centuries ago a hardy band of survivors, fleeing a planetary catastrophe, took refuge in the inhospitable asteroid belt. Struggling for years to make what had once been short-term mining settlements into suitable colonies for permanent civilization, eventually they succeeded all too well, and their thriving population is approaching critical mass. Now they must make a choice: to go on as they are on the crowded but functional asteroids or to give up all they have worked for in a desperate plan to rebuild their dead home planet. Their dilemma has brought them to the brink of civil war -- and into this volatile standoff comes the Enterprise, assigned a seemingly meaningless mission to chart this sector of space. Faced with an advanced society on the verge of self-destruction, it is up to the Enterprise, still carrying the weight of her demotion and disgrace, to find a way to lead the survivors to peace.
Book Synopsis Harvesting the Biosphere by : Vaclav Smil
Download or read book Harvesting the Biosphere written by Vaclav Smil and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2012-12-21 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An interdisciplinary and quantitative account of human claims on the biosphere's stores of living matter, from prehistoric hunting to modern energy production. The biosphere—the Earth's thin layer of life—dates from nearly four billion years ago, when the first simple organisms appeared. Many species have exerted enormous influence on the biosphere's character and productivity, but none has transformed the Earth in so many ways and on such a scale as Homo sapiens. In Harvesting the Biosphere, Vaclav Smil offers an interdisciplinary and quantitative account of human claims on the biosphere's stores of living matter, from prehistory to the present day. Smil examines all harvests—from prehistoric man's hunting of megafauna to modern crop production—and all uses of harvested biomass, including energy, food, and raw materials. Without harvesting of the biomass, Smil points out, there would be no story of human evolution and advancing civilization; but at the same time, the increasing extent and intensity of present-day biomass harvests are changing the very foundations of civilization's well-being. In his detailed and comprehensive account, Smil presents the best possible quantifications of past and current global losses in order to assess the evolution and extent of biomass harvests. Drawing on the latest work in disciplines ranging from anthropology to environmental science, Smil offers a valuable long-term, planet-wide perspective on human-caused environmental change.
Book Synopsis It Is Time to Reap My Harvest That Has Been Sown in Tears by : Pastor Christine Peebles
Download or read book It Is Time to Reap My Harvest That Has Been Sown in Tears written by Pastor Christine Peebles and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2019-07-30 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "They that sow in tears shall reap in joy" Psalms 126:5. "Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning" Psalms 30:5. In this life of mine, I have done a whole lot of crying, but at the same time, that old man was dying (the Adam nature). Before the death of Jesus, he suffered through a whole lot of things for our sake. The Bible said that he was wounded, he was bruised, he was despised, and he was rejected, and then he was crucified. The Bible tells me in 1 Peter 4:1: I got to arm myself likewise and suffer. There is consolation in knowing that God is going to deliver me out of all my afflictions. Trials brings forth pain and pain bring forth weeping and tears, and in the midst of my weeping and crying, I heard the Lord say, "Don't miss your harvest that has been sown in tears". My first book, "I Overcame by the Blood of the Lamb", in my writing, I was in pain and did a lot of crying: old wounds were opened. The second book I wrote, God had me to title it, "The Costly Anointing". God said, what you have suffered through is what has caused my anointing to be upon and within your life, and that is very costly: it is called The Costly Anointing. God said, you have suffered through a lot, and now it is time to reap your harvest that has been sown in tears. My consolation is in Revelation 21:4: And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.
