Book excerpt: Excerpt from Index to the Subject Catalogue of Harvard College Library The Subject Catalogue of Harvard College Library may be described as an alphabetical-classed catalogue. As in other classed or systematic catalogues, special subjects are grouped under general heads, but, as in a dictionary catalogue, these general heads are arranged in alphabetical, not systematic order, while the special topics and other subdivisions of these general classes also follow the order of the alphabet. The main headings, about 500 in number and distinguished in the following Index by heavy faced type and in reference by small capitals, are by no means of equal extent or importance in the ground they cover. Some, such as ambergris, automata, coffee-houses, and copying have less than a dozen cards and no subdivisions, while others like agriculture, antiquities, history, or music occupy many drawers of the catalogue and include a large number of subdivisions. The subdivisions or special topics, as has been said, fall in alphabetical order, but it should be noticed that they are frs quently grouped in several different alphabets in order to bring topics of the same character side by side. (see the examples given below.) It is to these subordinate headings in particular that the Index is intended to furnish a clew. To facilitate reference a number has been assigned to each main heading, while each sub-heading (or, in some cases, each alphabetical group of sub-headings) has its special number which follows the number of the main heading in the form of a decimal. These numbers are placed on the outside of the catalogue drawers and on the guide-blocks in the drawers and by means of them reference is made in the Index from each topic to the place or places in the catalogue where it occurs. In order to make clearer the general plan of the catalogue and the use Of these numbers, the various subdivisions of two classes, agriculture and painting, are set forth in order on the next page. A similar conspectus of all the headings and their subdivisions will perhaps be printed at some future time. The earlier history is to be found in the manuscript Records of the Corporation and of the Board of Overseers, which contain frequent notices of the Library and of the appoint ments of Librarians; lists of books given; codes of laws for its administration, and amendments thereto; and other matters of importance. The Treasurer's books and the books of letters, especially those from Thomas Hollis, also contain much of value. The Library's own manuscript records date back only to the fire of 1764; and, indeed, prior to Mr. Sibley's day, they are scanty and unsystematic. There is a ms. Catalogue, not dated, but probably prepared about 1780 or 1790, which contains the names of the givers of books then in the Library. For Sibley's own administration his manu script Library Journal, containing, besides his. Annual reports, a detailed record of events, is invaluable. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Calendar of the Sparks Manuscripts in Harvard College Library: With an Appendix Showing Other Manuscripts There is a condensed list of these papers, in the Appendix (pp. 213 - 230) of The Catalogue of the Library of Jared Sparks, with a list of the historical manuscripts collected by him and now deposited in the Library of Harvard University Cambridge, 1871. This appendix has been heretofore the only key to the contents of the collection, which is kept in a sepa rate case in the Library. The Roman numbers for headings in the present Calendar show the order in which the volumes stand in the case, being arranged alphabetically under four classes, English, French, Spanish, Miscellaneous. The Preface of the above-named Catalogue says of the papers that under Mr. Sparke's will they were made the property of his son, Mr. William Eliot Sparks, with a conditional reversion to Harvard University. Mr. W. E. Sparks has since (sept. 1886) died. The same account adds that these papers were collected with intuitive skill and increasing ability during various tours, undertaken since 1819 for the purpose: first in the thirteen original states; often elsewhere in his own enlarged country; three times in prolonged visits to Europe; by means also of his extensive correspondence during the years 1819 Then referring to papers still in the possession of Mr. Sparke's family, the preface goes on to say: These letters are arranged in sixty large volumes, with a daily index. The Journals of the tours point out the deposits of many unknown treasures; sketching scenes, characters and incidents - thus preserving information and reproducing reminiscences of a period far more remote. This is the material for some future adequate biography of Mr. Sparks, who has, however, already been commemorated in an extended memorial, which was prepared with every advantage of access to his papers, by his friend, the Rev. Dr. George Edward Ellis, for the Massachusetts Historical Society. This appeared first in the Proceedings of that society, May, 1868, and then separately as a Memoir of Jared Sparks, LL.D., by Geo. E. Ellis, Cambridge, 1869, accompanied by two portraits, one after an unfinished Stuart, painted in 1828; the other the profile of a bust taken later, by Hiram Powers, and presented to Harvard College by the students under his presidency. John Hays Gardiner was born at Gardiner, Maine, April 6, 1863, the son of Colonel John William Tudor Gardiner of the Class of 1836 and Ann Elizabeth (Hays) Gardiner, and the grandson of Robert Hallowell Gardiner of the Class of 1801. He was admitted to Harvard from J. P. Hopkinson's private school in July, 1881, and received his A. B. in 1885. The two following years he spent at the Harvard Law School, when health and strength failed him. Five years variously occupied in private tutoring and foreign travel, with frequent periods of complete rest at home, were necessary to restore him to an active life. In 1892 he began a connection with Harvard University that was to last almost continuously for twenty-one years. From September, 1892, until September, 1900, he was Instructor in English in Harvard College; and from September, 1900, to June, 1910, Assistant Professor of English; then, after a year devoted to writing, he entered the service of the Harvard Alumni Association to assume the editorship of the Harvard Alumni Bulletin, a position which he held at the time of his death in Boston on May 14, 1913.
