Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Harvard University, Vol. 1 This History had its origin in the following circumstances. In March, 1836, the Author accepted an invitation from the Corporation of Harvard University, to prepare, as President of the institution, a discourse, to be delivered on the second centennial anniversary of its foundation, in commemoration of that event, and of the founders and patrons of the semina ry. From the researches, into which he was led by this undertaking, it became apparent that these topics could not be satisfactorily in vestigated before the day fixed Upon for the celebration. The Author, therefore, decided to prepare such a general sketch of events and characters as might be'comprised Within the limits of an occasional address, and to an nounce his intention of attempting to do jus tice to the subject in a work of a more en larged form and permanent character. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Harvard Great men whose memory is today as green and wholesome as half a century ago, have transmitted to posterity the historic achievements of Harvard. They are achievements which have been accomplished by seriousness, achievements reflecting the staid light of our beloved Alma Mater. But, like in the great, busy world beyond our own College gates, there is a funny vein in life, if we but look for it. The "Office" is a mighty serious place for some of us, yet we never tire in attempts to think it a most grotesque retreat. And so it is with Harvard, and so it has been. In the short sketch of the College in these pages the endeavor has been to show that Harvard is not so serious an institution as some may have tried to make you believe. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Student-Life at Harvard The object of the book now in the reader's hands is to give a faithful picture of student life at Harvard University, as it appeared to undergraduates there rather more than half a score of years ago; the story following for this purpose the fortunes of the hero, from his examination for admission to the Freshman class, through the succeeding four years. Having had this object in view, the author trusts that no apology will be necessary for the expressions of opinion which the characters make, nor for the freedom of speech which they are allowed in these pages. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Harvard: The First American University Of young men for the ministry. Nothing could show clearer the spirit of these early colonists. Though less than four thousand in number, and scattered along the shores of Massachusetts Bay in sixteen hamlets, they were, nevertheless, able to engage in such an enterprise before ade quate provision had been made for food, raiment, shelter, a civil government, or divine worship; at a time when soil and climate had disappointed them, and their affairs were in a most critical condition; for, not only were they called to face famine, dis ease, and death, but the mother country and the surrounding sav age tribes were threatening them with war. The importance, not only of mental cultivation, but also of Christian learning, they had always valued in England, and, as they built their homes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Harvard In view of the circumstances surrounding the writing and publication of this volume a brief word of preface is fitting. John Hays Gardiner was born at Gardiner, Maine, April 6, 1863, the son of Colonel John William Tudor Gardiner of the Class of 1836 and Ann Elizabeth (Hays) Gardiner, and the grandson of Robert Hallowell Gardiner of the Class of 1801. He was admitted to Harvard from J. P. Hopkinson's private school in July, 1881, and received his A. B. in 1885. The two following years he spent at the Harvard Law School, when health and strength failed him. Five years variously occupied in private tutoring and foreign travel, with frequent periods of complete rest at home, were necessary to restore him to an active life. In 1892 he began a connection with Harvard University that was to last almost continuously for twenty-one years. From September, 1892, until September, 1900, he was Instructor in English in Harvard College; and from September, 1900, to June, 1910, Assistant Professor of English; then, after a year devoted to writing, he entered the service of the Harvard Alumni Association to assume the editorship of the Harvard Alumni Bulletin, a position which he held at the time of his death in Boston on May 14, 1913. His active interests were not confined to the limits of his assigned tasks. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Town of Harvard Massachusetts: 1732-1893 In case my decease occurs before the work is finished, it is my wish that you have a sufficient number of copies printed and bound - say three hundred - to give one to each deserv ing family in the town of Harvard, and one each to a few libraries where it will be of value. If all the copies are not thus disposed of, it is my wish that the remainder be deposi ted in the public library of Harvard, to be bestowed from time to time by the managers of that institution as they may deem advisable. All reasonable charges for writing, printing, binding and distributing the book will be cheerfully paid by me or by my executors, and this letter will be sufficient order to them for that purpose. When I returned to Cambridge at the end of Septem ber, it was almost with a feeling of anxiety that I went back to a spot where I had happily sauntered away so many an idle hour. I feared lest I should find that, under the fierce influ ence of the summer heats, most of its charms had passed away. My mind was soon set at rest. The Yard, I re corded, looked very pretty and pleasant in the sunshine of an autumn day. I wandered about it for more than half an hour with enjoyment, watching the bustle of the beginning of term, and the young life so full of activity and hope. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Harvard Law School, 1817-1917 Since the plan for the organization of the Centennial Anniversary on June 10th and 20th were announced, and since this pamphlet went to press, further developments have made it necessary to postpone the celebration of the anniversary indefinitely. The committee hopes that the circulation of this pamphlet may to some extent take the place of the celebration in focusing the attention of the alumni on the work of great law schools and their peculiar value, at periods like the present, in the history of popular government. If the alumni will read this account of the School and its development and reflect on the significance of the service of scattering through the country highly trained minds for the practical study of the multitude of problems of civil liberty under law, the unique opportunity offered by this anniversary, which is described in the preface, and to take advantage of which the celebration was planned, will not have been wholly lost. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Harvard Episodes So you think my college life from an undergraduate's standpoint, and it's the only standpoint I give that for, Hewitt snapped his fingers impatiently, will always be as much of a fizzle as it has so far? He had jumped up from the big chair in which he had all along been sprawling and stood before Robinson in an attitude that was at once incredulous and despairing. The momentary embar rassment that Curtiss felt at'this unex pected show of feeling on the part of his young friend, took the form of extreme deliberation in returning his cigarette-case to his pocket, and in repeating the per formance of lighting his cigarette that had not gone out.
