Book Synopsis The Comic Storytelling of Western Japan by : M. W. Shores
Download or read book The Comic Storytelling of Western Japan written by M. W. Shores and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-08-12 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rakugo, a popular form of comic storytelling, has played a major role in Japanese culture and society. Developed during the Edo (1600–1868) and Meiji (1868–1912) periods, it is still popular today, with many contemporary Japanese comedians having originally trained as rakugo artists. Rakugo is divided into two distinct strands, the Tokyo tradition and the Osaka tradition, with the latter having previously been largely overlooked. This pioneering study of the Kamigata (Osaka) rakugo tradition presents the first complete English translation of five classic rakugo stories, and offers a history of comic storytelling in Kamigata (modern Kansai, Kinki) from the seventeenth century to the present day. Considering the art in terms of gender, literature, performance, and society, this volume grounds Kamigata rakugo in its distinct cultural context and sheds light on the 'other' rakugo for students and scholars of Japanese culture and history.

Download or read book Treacherous Translation written by Serk-Bae Suh and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2013-10 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the role of translation—the rendering of texts and ideas from one language to another, as both act and trope—in shaping attitudes toward nationalism and colonialism in Korean and Japanese intellectual discourse between the time of Japan’s annexation of Korea in 1910 and the passing of the colonial generation in the mid-1960s. Drawing on Korean and Japanese texts ranging from critical essays to short stories produced in the colonial and postcolonial periods, it analyzes the ways in which Japanese colonial and Korean nationalist discourse pivoted on such concepts as language, literature, and culture.

Book Synopsis Tibetan Medicinal Plants by : Christa Kletter
Download or read book Tibetan Medicinal Plants written by Christa Kletter and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 1402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increasingly, modern medicine relies on so called traditional or ancient medical knowledge. Holistic practices such as adhering to proper diet, observing rules for appropriate behavior, and administering medical preparations are coupled with the latest technology and methods to treat the whole patient. In light of this trend, there is much to be gained from understanding of one of the oldest medical systems still in existence. Tibetan Medicinal Plants provides you a detailed analysis of how Tibetan plants are used in this centuries old system. The book opens with a summary of Tibetan medicine and covers the various habitats in which the plants are found. The main part of this volume encompasses 60 monographs listed by the Tibetan plant name. Each monograph consists of several chapters addressing different topics related either to the Tibetan or the Western approach. Most of the monographs contain a description of the macroscopic and microscopic characteristics of the used plant parts, and anatomical features of 76 plants are provided. Each monograph presents an overview of the known chemical constituents and pharmacological properties of each plant and describes their use in Tibetan medicine. In contrast to other publications on Tibetan medicine, where translations of the Tibetan terms are given in other languages, this book treats the Tibetan word as a technical term, keeps the Tibetan term and explains its meaning, lessening confusion by reducing the number of translations. Traditional Tibetan medicine has been in existence for centuries. Curative practices existed in the prebuddistic era, and the art of healing developed more than 2500 years ago. Tibetan Medicinal Plants provides a comprehensive overview of all plant types, thus making it easier to grasp the Tibetan concept. It gives you a comprehensive look at this centuries old science.

Book Synopsis The Influenza Pandemic Of 1918-1919 by : Paul Kupperberg
Download or read book The Influenza Pandemic Of 1918-1919 written by Paul Kupperberg and published by Infobase Publishing. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In late January 1918, Dr. Loren Miner, a country physician in rural Kansas, saw the first cases of an influenza of a violent nature. With a warning to the U.S. Public Health Service, his was the lone voice of alarm about the potential spread of this virulent new strain of a particularly deadly disease. With hundreds of thousands of American servicemen crisscrossing the nation through military training camps and then to Europe to fight in World War I, an influenza pandemic wasn't just a possibility, but a certainty. It swept through congested cities and rural communities alike, killing its victims in days, sometimes in hours. No one had ever seen anything like the Influenza Pandemic of 1918-1919. Before the deadly disease ran its course in 1919, more American soldiers died from the flu than in combat, more than one-fifth of the world's population was infected, and as many as 100 million people worldwide died from the disease that caused the most devastating pandemic in history.
