Book Synopsis Early American Proverbs and Proverbial Phrases by : Bartlett Jere Whiting
Download or read book Early American Proverbs and Proverbial Phrases written by Bartlett Jere Whiting and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1977 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: p.B. J. Whiting savors proverbial expressions and has devoted much of his lifetime to studying and collecting them; no one knows more about British and American proverbs than he. The present volume, based upon writings in British North America from the earliest settlements to approximately 1820, complements his and Archer Taylor's Dictionary of American Proverbs and Proverbial Phrases, 1820-1880. It differs from that work and from other standard collections, however, in that its sources are primarily not "literary" but instead workaday writings - letters, diaries, histories, travel books, political pamphlets, and the like. The authors represent a wide cross-section of the populace, from scholars and statesmen to farmers, shopkeepers, sailors, and hunters. Mr. Whiting has combed all the obvious sources and hundreds of out-of-the-way publications of local journals and historical societies. This body of material, "because it covers territory that has not been extracted and compiled in a scholarly way before, can justly be said to be the most valuable of all those that Whiting has brought together," according to Albert B. Friedman. "What makes the work important is Whiting's authority: a proverb or proverbial phrase is what BJW thinks is a proverb or proverbial phrase. There is no objective operative definition of any value, no divining rod; his tact, 'feel, ' experience, determine what's the real thing and what is spurious."

Book excerpt: We Hanged Our Harps Upon the Willows is a novelization of the biblical story of Nehemiah, the man, the King of Persia, who chose to help the children of Israel rebuild the city of Jerusalem. Nehemiah's story in the Bible is one of action, adventure, trusting in God, deceit, treason, and, of course, Nehemiah and the Israelites' ultimate victory over their enemies. The novel begins in current-day Jerusalem with an archaeologist and his four grandchildren involved in an archaeological dig, and then flashes back to Nehemiah's time, first in Persia, and then in Jerusalem.

Book excerpt: 'Those who have the most to hope and nothing to lose will always be dangerous.' ?Edmund BurkeIf Sir Richard Lynche, baronet of Duncullen, must evict tenants to make room for profitable cattle, so be it. It is 1766 and workaday Irish have had enough. The Levellers, members of a secret agrarian society, vow to remove the landowner's boot pinned to their necks. Using pitchforks, spades'whatever is handy'they tear down walls, maim livestock, and threaten to destroy whoever stands in their way.But Lynche and his cronies have the law on their side, and they've classified Leveller protests as treason. When the local priest and boyhood friend of Sir Richard speaks out against the gentry's oppression, he becomes a prime target in their battle to cram the rebels back into their place. What could go wrong?Harps Upon the Willows picks up fifteen years after Aroon leaves off, focusing on true historical events that rocked eighteenth-century Tipperary.

Book Synopsis Allegories of Encounter by : Andrew Newman
Download or read book Allegories of Encounter written by Andrew Newman and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2018-11-05 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presenting an innovative, interdisciplinary approach to colonial America's best-known literary genre, Andrew Newman analyzes depictions of reading, writing, and recollecting texts in Indian captivity narratives. While histories of literacy and colonialism have emphasized the experiences of Native Americans, as students in missionary schools or as parties to treacherous treaties, captivity narratives reveal what literacy meant to colonists among Indians. Colonial captives treasured the written word in order to distinguish themselves from their Native captors and to affiliate with their distant cultural communities. Their narratives suggest that Indians recognized this value, sometimes with benevolence: repeatedly, they presented colonists with books. In this way and others, Scriptures, saintly lives, and even Shakespeare were introduced into diverse experiences of colonial captivity. What other scholars have understood more simply as textual parallels, Newman argues instead may reflect lived allegories, the identification of one's own unfolding story with the stories of others. In an authoritative, wide-ranging study that encompasses the foundational New England narratives, accounts of martyrdom and cultural conversion in New France and Mohawk country in the 1600s, and narratives set in Cherokee territory and the Great Lakes region during the late eighteenth century, Newman opens up old tales to fresh, thought-provoking interpretations.
