Book excerpt: People have harnessed the formidable power of moving water for millennia, but they have only used it to generate electricity since the late nineteenth century. Since that time, it has become an important alternative energy source to fossil fuels. In fact, more electricity is produced by waterpower than by any other renewable energy source in the United States. This book offers an in-depth look at the turbines used to generate hydroelectricity. It explains which locations are best for generating hydroelectricity and explores the cultural and environmental concerns raised by the building of dams. The focus is on hydroelectric plants, but this book also discusses pumped hydro storage, tidal power, and wave energy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work introduces hydroelectric power plant optimization method. The paper also includes some background information used for preparation of Hydro-Electric Energy On-line Calculator, as on site: http://www.geocities.ws/nowarski/calculators/Hydro.html The calculator is for general information only; it does not include many components and must not be used for actual design, economic evaluation, or decisions regarding any real project. In addition, the calculator applies Francis turbine efficiency curve formula which is specific for this work and for the calculator and cannot be used for other turbines. The calculator is applied in this work for simulation of the hydroelectric power plant electricity export and for optimization of turbine size. Estimation of amount of electricity which will be generated and exported from hydroelectric plant is the most important step in decision taking process regarding the hydro project. The amount of electricity exported from the hydroelectric plant will be much lower than the nominal power of the turbine considering 24 hours a day and 365 days a year. The optimization using this online calculator allows determination of optimum turbine size for various patterns of the available water flow. The optimization includes energy and economic considerations. From the energy point of view, the aim of the optimization is to find the turbine power, which results in highest net electricity export. From the economic point of view, the aim of the optimization is to find the turbine power that results in highest net income. Application of the calculator for simulation and optimization can significantly save investment cost of the project and increase net profit.

Book excerpt: As the global supply of conventional energy sources, such as fossil fuels, dwindles and becomes more and more expensive, unconventional and renewable sources of energy, such as power generation from water sources, is becoming more and more important. Hydropower has been around for decades, but this book suggests new methods that are more cost-effective and less intrusive to the environment for creating power sources from rivers, the tides, and other sources of water. The energy available from water currents is potentially much greater than society’s needs. Presenting a detailed discussion of the costs, risks, and challenges of building power plants that run on hydropower, this highly technical explanation of tidal power plants offers engineers practical applications of highly efficient and cost-effective power systems. Not just useful to engineers working in the field, this treatise is a valuable textbook for students and researchers working in tidal power.

Book excerpt: Scientific Study from the year 2018 in the subject Physics - Mechanics, grade: Cfd program ansys CFX, , course: ingénierie en électromécanique, language: English, abstract: Energy is one of the most major fields in the development of a society and its economy. Its consummations rate could by the way be an indicator of the level of prosperity that a nation could achieve. Among renewable sources of energies, hydro power is an important source of environmental-friendly energy and has become more and more important in the recent years. Water energy, as a renewable source of energy, can help in reducing the dependency on fossil fuels. The number of installed water power systems is increasing every year and many nations have made plans to make large investments in hydropower in the near future. Many developed and developing countries have realized the importance of water as an important resource for power generation and necessary measures are being taken up across the globe to tap this energy for its effective utilization in power production. Remarkable advances in water turbines design have been possible due to developments in modern technology. In this context, we are interested in developing a design and a numerical study of the Impulse and the Cross flow hydro turbine‘s type. This book contains four chapters; in the first, a bibliographic study has been developed in order to present a general view about renewable energy, hydropower and different ways to gather it. A particular interest has been given to the water rotors concerning their different types and historical of some famous type like cross flow and Impulse turbines type, object of our study. Indeed, the bibliographic study summarized the considered parameters to improve the water turbine performances. The second chapter presents the numerical approach developed using the CFD code "CFX". I present also the mathematical formulation and the turbulence model will be presented. Then a background of the used methods in our numerical model will be undertaken. The third chapter presents the numerical simulations consisting on the characterization of the hydro dynamic structure of the impulse and the cross flow turbines The fourth chapter consist of the design of the test bench and the different components and solutions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work delivers ideas, comments and projects on energy, communications, transport, management, human resources, and financial and legal issues which macroengineering can contribute towards the solution of the Earth's environmental problems. Some 20 engineers and scholars identify problems in the next century whose solutions call for international policy planning and a more collaborative, peaceful and prosperous world order. Imaginative concepts employ forward thinking for applying technology in revolutionary projects. The book presents results of research on a triple helical turbine capable of extracting vast amounts of energy from slow-moving water, an invention which could harness rivers and ocean currents, rendering high dams (with their political, social and ecological implications) redundant. These turbines are already in mass production in the USA for use in the Gulf Stream to produce energy and hydrogen fuel, and can also be used to harness power from the wind. Another project, for which the technology is already available, will harvest solar energy by satellites stationed beyond our atmosphere and beam it to the Earth; and yet another calls for planetary defence of Earth against asteroid collisions. The environmental section discusses large projects for changing our climate, planning and costing for a sub-Mediterranean aqueduct connecting the River Rhone in France with Algeria, and plans for intensive fish farming of the oceans. The role of satellites includes telemedicine, and there are Swiss plans for further tunnelling through the Alps. Project management sections include the formation of a military-civilian conservation corps, financial and legal issues, macro-projects in China, and a forecast of 21st century macro-problems. Delivers ideas, comments and projects on energy, communications, transport, management, human resources, and financial and legal issues which macroengineering can contribute to the solution of the Earth’s environmental problems Identifies problems in the next century whose solutions call for international policy planning and a more collaborative, peaceful and prosperous world order Presents research on a triple helical turbine capable of extracting vast amounts of energy from slow-moving water
