This book was released on 2011-11-13 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Degenerate and singular parabolic equations have been the subject of extensive research for the last 25 years. Despite important achievements, the issue of the Harnack inequality for non-negative solutions to these equations, both of p-Laplacian and porous medium type, while raised by several authors, has remained basically open. Recently considerable progress has been made on this issue, to the point that, except for the singular sub-critical range, both for the p-laplacian and the porous medium equations, the theory is reasonably complete. It seemed therefore timely to trace a comprehensive overview, that would highlight the main issues and also the problems that still remain open. The authors give a comprehensive treatment of the Harnack inequality for non-negative solutions to p-laplace and porous medium type equations, both in the degenerate (p/i”2 or im/i”1) and in the singular range (1“ip/i2 or 0“im/i

Book Synopsis Second Order Equations of Elliptic and Parabolic Type by : E. M. Landis
Download or read book Second Order Equations of Elliptic and Parabolic Type written by E. M. Landis and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1997-12-02 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most books on elliptic and parabolic equations emphasize existence and uniqueness of solutions. By contrast, this book focuses on the qualitative properties of solutions. In addition to the discussion of classical results for equations with smooth coefficients (Schauder estimates and the solvability of the Dirichlet problem for elliptic equations; the Dirichlet problem for the heat equation), the book describes properties of solutions to second order elliptic and parabolic equations with measurable coefficients near the boundary and at infinity. The book presents a fine elementary introduction to the theory of elliptic and parabolic equations of second order. The precise and clear exposition is suitable for graduate students as well as for research mathematicians who want to get acquainted with this area of the theory of partial differential equations.
Book Synopsis Degenerate Elliptic Equations by : Serge Levendorskii
Download or read book Degenerate Elliptic Equations written by Serge Levendorskii and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the first to be devoted to the study of various properties of wide classes of degenerate elliptic operators of arbitrary order and pseudo-differential operators with multiple characteristics. Conditions for operators to be Fredholm in appropriate weighted Sobolev spaces are given, a priori estimates of solutions are derived, inequalities of the Grding type are proved, and the principal term of the spectral asymptotics for self-adjoint operators is computed. A generalization of the classical Weyl formula is proposed. Some results are new, even for operators of the second order. In addition, an analogue of the Boutet de Monvel calculus is developed and the index is computed. For postgraduate and research mathematicians, physicists and engineers whose work involves the solution of partial differential equations.
Book Synopsis Fully Nonlinear Elliptic Equations by : Luis A. Caffarelli
Download or read book Fully Nonlinear Elliptic Equations written by Luis A. Caffarelli and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1995 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of the book is to extend classical regularity theorems for solutions of linear elliptic partial differential equations to the context of fully nonlinear elliptic equations. This class of equations often arises in control theory, optimization, and other applications. The authors give a detailed presentation of all the necessary techniques. Instead of treating these techniques in their greatest generality, they outline the key ideas and prove the results needed for developing the subsequent theory. Topics discussed in the book include the theory of viscosity solutions for nonlinear equations, the Alexandroff estimate and Krylov-Safonov Harnack-type inequality for viscosity solutions, uniqueness theory for viscosity solutions, Evans and Krylov regularity theory for convex fully nonlinear equations, and regularity theory for fully nonlinear equations with variable coefficients.

Book Synopsis Lectures on Elliptic and Parabolic Equations in Holder Spaces by : Nikolaĭ Vladimirovich Krylov
Download or read book Lectures on Elliptic and Parabolic Equations in Holder Spaces written by Nikolaĭ Vladimirovich Krylov and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1996 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These lectures concentrate on fundamentals of the modern theory of linear elliptic and parabolic equations in H older spaces. Krylov shows that this theory - including some issues of the theory of nonlinear equations - is based on some general and extremely powerful ideas and some simple computations. The main object of study is the first boundary-value problems for elliptic and parabolic equations, with some guidelines concerning other boundary-value problems such as the Neumann or oblique derivative problems or problems involving higher-order elliptic operators acting on the boundary. Numerical approximations are also discussed. This book, containing 200 exercises, aims to provide a good understanding of what kind of results are available and what kinds of techniques are used to obtain them.
Book Synopsis Smoothing and Decay Estimates for Nonlinear Diffusion Equations by : Juan Luis Vázquez
Download or read book Smoothing and Decay Estimates for Nonlinear Diffusion Equations written by Juan Luis Vázquez and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2006-08-03 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text is concerned with the quantitative aspects of the theory of nonlinear diffusion equations; equations which can be seen as nonlinear variations of the classical heat equation. They appear as mathematical models in different branches of Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Engineering, and are also relevant in differential geometry and relativistic physics. Much of the modern theory of such equations is based on estimates and functional analysis. Concentrating on a class of equations with nonlinearities of power type that lead to degenerate or singular parabolicity ("equations of porous medium type"), the aim of this text is to obtain sharp a priori estimates and decay rates for general classes of solutions in terms of estimates of particular problems. These estimates are the building blocks in understanding the qualitative theory, and the decay rates pave the way to the fine study of asymptotics. Many technically relevant questions are presented and analyzed in detail. A systematic picture of the most relevant phenomena is obtained for the equations under study, including time decay, smoothing, extinction in finite time, and delayed regularity.
