Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twelve stories explore the stresses and strains inherent in youth coming of age, family dynamics, misplaced and unrequited love, the reserved strength in a marriage, a confrontation with death, and the constant awareness that there is never enough money. Ernest Ramblers family lives with the knowledge that Ernest senses that he must always be looking for or moving to a better job, which means they will be moving again soon. The stories place the characters in Indiana, Illinois, Kansas, Arkansas, and Louisiana. None of the characters seems to find a sense of permanence in any one place. In Ramblers and Spinners, coming of age can mean a counting of losses. In A Wide Day, the death of a chicken reveals a mystery about time and life and death. Arrangements and Harmonys Song display how little one might know about another. There is a general sense that everything in life involves unending pursuits of security and love and that coming of age may well be a never-ending process.

Book excerpt: “In this one-of-a-kind celebration of singing with others, I’d call her pitch nearly perfect.”—The Atlantic For Stacy Horn, regardless of what is going on in the world or her life, singing in an amateur choir—the Choral Society of Grace Church in New York—never fails to take her to a place where hope reigns and everything good is possible. She’s not particularly religious, and her voice is not exceptional (so she says), but like the 32.5 million other chorus members throughout this country, singing makes her happy. Horn brings us along as she sings some of the greatest music humanity has ever produced, delves into the dramatic stories of conductors and composers, unearths the fascinating history of group singing, and explores remarkable discoveries from the new science of singing, including all the unexpected health benefits. Imperfect Harmony is the story of one woman who has found joy and strength in the weekly ritual of singing and in the irresistible power of song.

Country harmony, for most of these, is synonymous with the blended voices of Ira and Charles Louvin. The Louvin Brothers, for sure, have influenced almost all revered rock-and-roll singers and country singers, from the Everly Brothers to Emmylou Harris. Until now there has been no full-length book about their remarkable career and their rich, complex music. In Close Harmony provides a detailed portrait of the Louvins and the turbulent country-music world of the 1950s.

Book excerpt: Eastside High School in Paterson, New Jersey, a school that had transformed over the years into one of the worst high schools in the state, became the subject of a full-length Warner Brothers motion picture entitled Lean on Me. The main character of the movie was the beleaguered principal known as Crazy Joe Clark, who had been assigned by the district superintendent to come in and turn things around. He introduced what eventually became very controversial administrative methods that ultimately led to significant changes at the school. Six-Part Harmony: The Untold Story of Riff chronicles the relationship of the R&B recording artists known as Riff with their manager, mentor, and vocal arranger, Dale "Skip" Van Rensalier, as they, together, navigated the maze of the recorded music industry while trying to attain some significant recognition for the group. Riff parachuted to fame after appearing in one of the more recognizable scenes of Lean on Me, singing the Eastside school song in the school bathroom at the behest of Principal Clark (portrayed by actor Morgan Freeman). They were students at Eastside High School at that time. Skip, a 1966 Eastside High School graduate, had returned to his alma mater as a school social worker and met Riff after hearing them sing their rendition of the school song over the school intercom during a homeroom period. With the success of Lean on Me and the exposure that Riff achieved from their appearance in the movie, once contracts had been negotiated and signed between Riff and Skip, the entertainment business journey began. What the six of them never realized was that it would be a journey filled with twists, turns, hills, valleys, lies, ego trips, and empty promises. In other words, a reality check that blindsided all of them. This is their untold story.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1948, the Orioles, a Baltimore-based vocal group, recorded "It's Too Soon to Know." Combining the sound of Tin Pan Alley with gospel and blues sensibilities, the Orioles saw their first hit reach #13 on the pop charts, thus introducing the nation to vocal rhythm & blues and paving the way for the most successful groups of the 1950s. In the first scholarly treatment of this influential musical genre, Stuart Goosman chronicles the Orioles' story and that of myriad other black vocal groups in the postwar period. A few, like the Orioles, Cardinals, and Swallows from Baltimore and the Clovers from Washington, D.C., established the popularity of vocal rhythm & blues nationally. Dozens of other well-known groups (and hundreds of unknown ones) across the country cut records and performed until about 1960. Record companies initially marketed this music as rhythm & blues; today, group harmony continues to resonate for some as "doo-wop." Focusing in particular on Baltimore and Washington and drawing significantly from oral histories, Group Harmony details the emergence of vocal rhythm & blues groups from black urban neighborhoods. Group harmony was a source of empowerment for young singers, for it provided them with a means of expression and some aspect of control over their lives where there were limited alternatives. Through group harmony, young black males celebrated and musically confounded, when they could not overcome, complex issues of race, separatism, and assimilation during the postwar period. Group harmony also became a significant resource for the popular music industry. Goosman interviews dozens of performers, deejays, and industry professionals to examine the entrepreneurial promise of midcentury popular music and chronicle the convergence of music, place, and business, including the business of records, radio, promotion, and song writing. Featured in the book's account of the black urban roots of rhythm & blues are the recollections of singers from groups such as the Cardinals, Clovers, Dunbar Four, Four Bars of Rhythm, Five Blue Notes, Hi Fis, Plants, Swallows, and many others, including Jimmy McPhail, a well-known Washington vocalist; Deborah Chessler, the manager and songwriter for the original Orioles; Jesse Stone, the writer and arranger from Atlantic Records; Washington radio personality Jackson Lowe; and seminal black deejays Al ("Big Boy") Jefferson, Maurice ("Hot Rod") Hulbert, and Tex Gathings.

They rarely, if ever, discuss a song's meaning and feeling, even though those elements are precisely what draws people to the music in the first place. Thousands of books have been written about choral technique, teaching people how to sing technically well. What sets The Heart of Vocal Harmony apart is its focus on honest unified expression and the process of delivering an emotionally compelling performance. It delves into an underdeveloped vocal topic the heart of the music and the process involved with expressing it. The Heart of Vocal Harmony is not just for a cappella groups it is also for vocal harmony groups, ensembles, and choirs at all levels, with or without instruments. In addition to the process, the book features discussions with some of the biggest luminaries in vocal harmony: composers, arrangers, directors, singers, and groups including Eric Whitacre, Pentatonix, the Manhattan Transfer, and more!
