Book excerpt: In the tranquil haven of Harmony Bay, where the lapping waves compose a soothing symphony against the glistening shores, a tale of rekindled passions and rediscovered purpose unfolds. Within this idyllic coastal town, the meeting of two souls, both adrift in the turbulent currents of their lives, sets the stage for an extraordinary journey of self-discovery and love. Amidst the gentle embrace of the ocean breeze, Richard Mitchell, a once-celebrated musician, now a disillusioned wanderer, finds solace along the rugged coastline. His heartache and thwarted dreams find an unexpected outlet as he crafts exquisite instruments from the remnants of forgotten treasures washed ashore. Little does he know that these unique creations will weave together the destinies of individuals far beyond the confines of his quiet sanctuary. Gianna Hartman, a renowned music producer haunted by the trappings of success, hears whispers of Richard's unconventional artistry. These echoes of melodies that defy convention stir a dormant passion within her, and she embarks on a journey to Harmony Bay to unearth the source. When their paths finally cross, it's as if the universe itself orchestrated their encounter, drawing them together in pursuit of a shared destiny. The harmony they create is not limited to the music that emanates from Richard's reclaimed instruments; it extends to the cadence of their hearts finding resonance in one another. As their collaborative efforts in music flourish, so too does an unspoken connection that transcends words. But the path they tread is not without discord. The tumultuous undercurrents of fame, the haunting shadows of past failures, and the relentless demands of the music industry threaten to drown out the delicate notes of their love story. In 'Harmony's Heartbeat,' the reimagined notes of salvaged instruments intertwine with the rhythm of love and perseverance. The resulting symphony is more than an arrangement of musical notes, it's a testament to the healing potency of melodies, a celebration of human connection through art, and a reminder that even the most discordant of circumstances can be transformed into harmonious tunes with the right companionship. Join Richard and Gianna as they navigate the tempestuous waters of fame, passion, and self-discovery. Feel the resonance of their journey as it reverberates through the pages of this heartwarming tale, reminding us all that amidst life's chaos, the music of the heart can guide us to our own harmonious ever after.

Book excerpt: In one of his most popular lecture courses - formerly published as Man as Symphony of the Creative Word - Rudolf Steiner presents an extraordinary panorama of spiritual knowledge centring on the human being. We are the harmony of creation - a microcosm - containing within us 'all the laws and secrets of the world'.Steiner begins by speaking about our inner relationship to three ancient and sacred representatives of the animal kingdom - eagle, lion and bull - and to the forces of the cosmos that form them. He goes on to deepen these themes by approaching the plant and animal worlds in the context of planetary and cosmic evolution. A new category is then introduced: the elemental nature spirits - the metaphysical beings who work with plants and animals. Steiner gives a unique and intimate description of them and describes the cooperation they offer to mankind. Finally, the human being - the 'harmony of the Creative Word' - is placed at the heart of this spiritual celebration of life.

Those who came to his long, low, derelict shack sought his psychic and spiritualistic gifts. They brought danger, damnation and death and asked him, begged him desperately, to save or at least locate their souls. His business required him to duel with demons. While he frequently won, each victory exacted a price, and in the end his toughest opponent was "Sister Chaos"—no demon. But something worse. Much, much worse.

Book excerpt: My first encounter with the theory of harmony was during my last year at school (1975). This fascinating system of rules crystallized the intuitive knowledge of harmony I had acquired from years of piano playing, and facilitated memorization, transcription, arrangement and composition. For the next five years, I studied music (piano) and science (Physics) at the Univer sity of Melbourne. This "strange combination" started me wondering about the origins of those music theory "rules". To what extent were they determined or influenced by physics? mathematics? physiology? conditioning? In 1981, the supervisor of my honours project in musical acoustics, Neville Fletcher, showed me an article entitled "Pitch, consonance, and harmony", by a certain Ernst Terhardt of the Technical University of Munich. By that stage, I had devoured a considerable amount of (largely unsatisfactory) material on the nature and origins of harmony, which enabled me to recognize the significance of Terhardt's article. But it was not until I arrived in Munich the following year (on Terhardt's invitation) that I began to appreciate the conse quences of his "psychoacoustical" approach for the theory of harmony. That is what this book is about. The book presents Terhardt's work against the broad context of music perception research, past and present. Music perception is a multidisciplinary mixture of physics, psychology and music. Where different theoretical ap proaches appear contradictory, I try to show instead that they complement and enrich one another.

Book excerpt: “In this one-of-a-kind celebration of singing with others, I’d call her pitch nearly perfect.”—The Atlantic For Stacy Horn, regardless of what is going on in the world or her life, singing in an amateur choir—the Choral Society of Grace Church in New York—never fails to take her to a place where hope reigns and everything good is possible. She’s not particularly religious, and her voice is not exceptional (so she says), but like the 32.5 million other chorus members throughout this country, singing makes her happy. Horn brings us along as she sings some of the greatest music humanity has ever produced, delves into the dramatic stories of conductors and composers, unearths the fascinating history of group singing, and explores remarkable discoveries from the new science of singing, including all the unexpected health benefits. Imperfect Harmony is the story of one woman who has found joy and strength in the weekly ritual of singing and in the irresistible power of song.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What we call today "Western Music" has been turning over millennia into a gigantic accumulation of intellectual crap seasoned with religious necromancy without anyone stopping to try to put order in this mess. The abuse of so much rancid irrationality has made it a forbidden ground for reason and that it is only accessible through the abuse of memory and repetition; of suffering, in short. From Pythagoras, who wanted to reach twelve notes by combining seven different series of seven notes each, to the monk Guido of Arezzo who had the idea of recording music with ink so that his melodies would not degenerate when going from one monastery to another. He designs the solfeggio with the obsessive idea of avoiding playing the cursed tritone that would invoke Satan, dragging any good Christian into the most terrible hells, an idea that excited the Pope of the time and that ordered his learning. Another monk could not be missing, Miguel García alias "Padre Basilio" who at the end of the 18th century put so many strings on the guitar that he found himself with the problem that he did not have enough fingers to play three notes with six strings using only four fingers, so he dedicated himself to arranging orthopedic postures so that the new instrument would not sound horrendously bad. Most musicians are unaware that we are in the 21st century, that we know how to count to twelve, that we have devices for recording music that are better than India ink, and that we have five fingers on our right hand with which to select which strings to play and not just a deformed stump to tear them. We know that sound is produced in the auditory consciousness. We also know how we hear based on our anatomy and we have done neuroscientific studies with which we have defined harmony based on subjective relative dissonances and even that the most important thing, rhythm, is what music draws. Music differs from noise in its simplicity, and if there is anything a healthy brain hates more than complex sounds.

Book excerpt: Eastside High School in Paterson, New Jersey, a school that had transformed over the years into one of the worst high schools in the state, became the subject of a full-length Warner Brothers motion picture entitled Lean on Me. The main character of the movie was the beleaguered principal known as Crazy Joe Clark, who had been assigned by the district superintendent to come in and turn things around. He introduced what eventually became very controversial administrative methods that ultimately led to significant changes at the school. Six-Part Harmony: The Untold Story of Riff chronicles the relationship of the R&B recording artists known as Riff with their manager, mentor, and vocal arranger, Dale "Skip" Van Rensalier, as they, together, navigated the maze of the recorded music industry while trying to attain some significant recognition for the group. Riff parachuted to fame after appearing in one of the more recognizable scenes of Lean on Me, singing the Eastside school song in the school bathroom at the behest of Principal Clark (portrayed by actor Morgan Freeman). They were students at Eastside High School at that time. Skip, a 1966 Eastside High School graduate, had returned to his alma mater as a school social worker and met Riff after hearing them sing their rendition of the school song over the school intercom during a homeroom period. With the success of Lean on Me and the exposure that Riff achieved from their appearance in the movie, once contracts had been negotiated and signed between Riff and Skip, the entertainment business journey began. What the six of them never realized was that it would be a journey filled with twists, turns, hills, valleys, lies, ego trips, and empty promises. In other words, a reality check that blindsided all of them. This is their untold story.

Book excerpt: I may be the villain of the story, but at least I get a leading role. Evil is a term thrown around history and literature as if it's something so easily definable. A concept to fight against. Evil doesn’t exist. Neither does ‘good.’ Vampires do, though. I just happen to be one. I’ve cruised through the centuries managing to avoid all the wars, supernatural and human, but still going to all the best parties. I would say I avoided bloodshed, but it’s kind of part of the whole ‘vampire’ thing. I’ve lived on the fringes of a society that considered cruelty and sadism favorable character traits for almost five hundred years. Now I'm in the middle of a war that might just put my nonbeating heart in a lot of danger. Battles, I can handle. The impossible attraction between me and the vampire slayer, not to mention the penetrating gaze of the king of our race, on the other hand? I might not get out undead.

Book excerpt: In a world that seems increasingly fragmented, J. Philip Newell calls us to a vision of life′s essential oneness. He invites us to listen for the heartbeat of God and to be part of a new harmony. A New Harmony is based on a Christianity more integrated with the earth and with the rest of humanity and we are taken on a pathway towards transformation in our lives. A New Harmony communicates across the boundaries of religion and race that have separated us and honours our distinct inheritances by serving what is deeper still—the oneness of our origins and the oneness of Earth′s destiny.
