Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever wondered how you can maintain your current lifestyle, but not exhaust our planet's resources? In modern times, many of us have environmental knowledge but we lack an understanding of how to apply that knowledge to our everyday lives. Bridging this gap is what has motivated ecological economist Dr Kamaljit Sangha to write this book. Dr Sangha examines how people can make a difference to the environment by proposing little actions at the household scale that can contribute towards saving our planet. This book examines how to:- Minimise the gap between scientific knowledge and public awareness- Reduce the impact of our actions on our natural environment- Maintain our earth's natural resources- Be happier and healthier by recognising our reliance on Mother Nature and re-establishing our connections with nature. Dr Sangha believes there are a few, very easy steps that everyone - whether they reside in the city or the country - can take to save money, their mental and physical health, and ultimately our planet.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is a unique approach to the teachings of the Founder of Aikido, Morihei Ueshiba, as interpreted by his direct student of fifteen years. Mitsugi Saotome examines the spiritual philosophy of the Founder, the warrior ideals of feudal Japan as the basis of his martial arts philosophy, and the scientific principles underlying the philosophy of Aikido technique. The author shows that the physical movement of Aikido is the embodiment of principles of the spirit. Negative force is not countered with aggression but is controlled and redirected through the power and balance of spiral movement. This is the shape of Aikido and the dynamic shape at the foundation of all energies of existence. Aikido movement can only be understood from its roots in universal law and the processes of nature. The sincere practice and study of Aikido deepens our appreciation for the perfection of nature's balance and brings us back into harmony with our environment, other people, and ourselves. Abundantly illustrated with the author's drawings, diagrams, and calligraphies, as well as photographs demonstrating Aikido techniques, the book also offers a history of Aikido, personal anecdotes about the Founder, and translations of several of his lectures.

Book excerpt: How to safely de-tox from IT overload—with the healing effects of nature Scientific studies have shown that natural environments can have remarkable benefits for human health. Natural environments are more likely to promote positive emotions; and viewing and walking in nature have been associated with heightened physical and mental energy. Nature has also been found to have a positive impact on children who have been diagnosed with impulsivity, hyperactivity, and attention deficit disorder. A powerful wake-up call for our tech-immersed society, Your Brain on Nature examines the fascinating effects that exposure to nature can have on the brain. In Your Brain on Nature, physician Eva Selhub and naturopath Alan Logan examine not only the effects of nature on the brain—but the ubiquitous influence of everyday technology on the brain, and how IT overload and its many distractions may even be changing it. Offering an antidote for the technology-addicted, the book outlines emerging nature-based therapies including ecotherapy, as well as practical strategies for improving your (and your children's) cognitive functioning, mental health, and physical well-being through ecotherapeutic, nutritional, and behavioural means. Details the back to nature movement and the benefits of nature on the brain and body, from reducing the symptoms of ADHD to improving mood and physical energy Explains the effects of air quality, aromas, light and sound on the brain, including SAD and sleep loss A fascinating look at the effects that both nature and technology have on the brain's functioning and one's overall well-being, Your Brain on Nature is every tech-addict's guide to restoring health and balance in an increasingly IT-dependent world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a lot that we are able to focus on when it comes to working with and understanding the Native American people. This is a group that was once in harmony with nature, who had an order that is different than what we see with many of our modern times, and who would be able to live peacefully with the world for many years. When the white settlers came from Europe and started to take over, this spelled trouble for the native tribes, as we will explore in more detail as we go through this guidebook and learn about these fascinating groups that are known as the Native Americans. Even though the U.S. government was able to take over these people fairly effectively, this group of people was able to share a lot of values and believes with us that we can benefit from today. This guidebook is going to spend some time talking about the Native people, from all of the different tribes that are out there, and so much more. We will walk right from the beginning of these people, with a look at where they originally came from and how they got to America, all the way through some of their legends, their music, their artwork, their main leaders, and more. While we are on this, we can even take a look at some of the ways that the white settlers took over, how they were able to gain the trust or the power to do all of this, and some of the many wars that resulted in the process. And we will follow the process through until our modern times with a look at how many of the Native tribes that survived are doing today. There are so many topics that we are able to explore when it comes to these varied and diverse tribes, and so much that we can learn as well. some of the topics that we need to look through here include: -Origin and some of the theories about how the native people made it through North and South America. -Some of the different tribes that populated the continent, including how they lived and some of the things that made them unique. -What happened as settlers started to expand out and take over the Americas. -After settling in the area, we take a look at how the settlers began their own country against England and then turned their sights towards conquering the West. -Some of the popular Indian chiefs and celebrities who fought on their side. -Some of the cultural aspects that we need to know about these people, including some of the art, myths, and more. -A look at some of the social characteristics that we can learn from the native tribes, including their organization, music, medicine, and more. -How the native people handled the environment around them, including the current teachings and myths about how to go with nature. -How the native tribes are fairing in our modern world today. There is so much that we can glean and learn from people who have not stood a fighting chance in many years. And this guidebook is going to walk us through all of that and how we can benefit from using some of their beliefs and more. When you are ready to learn more about respecting and loving the earth in a manner that is as reverent as the Native Americans, make sure to check out this guidebook to get started.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Music theorists have long believed that 19th-century triadic progressions idiomatically extend the diatonic syntax of 18th-century classical tonality, and have accordingly unified the two repertories under a single mode of representation. Post-structuralist musicologists have challenged this belief, advancing the view that many romantic triadic progressions exceed the reach of classical syntax and are mobilized as the result of a transgressive, anti-syntactic impulse. In Audacious Euphony, author Richard Cohn takes both of these views to task, arguing that romantic harmony operates under syntactic principles distinct from those that underlie classical tonality, but no less susceptible to systematic definition. Charting this alternative triadic syntax, Cohn reconceives what consonant triads are, and how they relate to one another. In doing so, he shows that major and minor triads have two distinct natures: one based on their acoustic properties, and the other on their ability to voice-lead smoothly to each other in the chromatic universe. Whereas their acoustic nature underlies the diatonic tonality of the classical tradition, their voice-leading properties are optimized by the pan-triadic progressions characteristic of the 19th century. Audacious Euphony develops a set of inter-related maps that organize intuitions about triadic proximity as seen through the lens of voice-leading proximity, using various geometries related to the 19th-century Tonnetz. This model leads to cogent analyses both of particular compositions and of historical trends across the long nineteenth century. Essential reading for music theorists, Audacious Euphony is also a valuable resource for music historians, performers and composers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ¿The Soul of Nature¿ offers a scientific basis to comprehend the inherent unity, hidden within human beings, and all living creatures. To be alive in the world, demands the development and utilization of a full spectrum of energies. This is the miracle of life and the meaning behind the struggle to survive. To live requires the densest bone material and also the finest levels of awareness and consciousness each species can muster. What humans refer to as ¿soul¿ can only be realized when all possible energies come into a unified harmony. And ¿soul¿ may have many different degrees and levels. To seek out the truth in our modern world we cannot avoid exploring science and technology. At the same time some may still hear the call, reaching us from ancient times, concerning an inner world we also need to explore. The evolutionary effect of science and technology on ourselves must be taken into account. This development has gradually moved humans further away from a direct contact and experience of our own nature. This is true both externally as well as internally, and also in a physical as well as emotional and psychological way. This increasing separation from a natural order needs to become reconciled within. We are tearing ourselves apart. We are in danger of losing our sense of unity, both within ourselves, with our neighbors, and with the world around us.
