Book excerpt: Five countries which exert major influence internationally in the standard setting process in accounting are used as examples of the processes involved in deriving accounting standards: Germany, France, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America are compared with regard to the legal, economic and cultural considerations which influence how their accounting standards are derived. This work analyzes the differences and considers how they apply to three key aspects of financial statement valuation (historical cost vs. revaluation), how profit and loss (short term results or longterm instability) is recognized, and what financial statements should show. From those differences, the effect on preparers and users of financial statements and stock exchange/regulators is discussed and the disadvantages are considered as is the issue of the need for international harmonization of accounting standards (p. vii-viii).
