This book was released on 2020-04-01 with total page 485 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book discusses in details the main hardware and firmware fundamentals about micro- controllers. The goal is to present all the concepts necessary to understand and design an embedded system based on microcontrollers. The book discusses on: Binary logic and arithmetic; Embedded-systems basics; Low-end 8-bit microcontrollers by Microchip and STMicroelectronics; On-chip memories, Input/Output ports, peripherals; Assembly instruction sets; EasyPIC evaluation board by MikroElektronika; High-end 32-bit cores by ARM-Cortex; STM32F4 microprocessor by STMicroelectronics; Nucleo board for STM32F4 by STMicroelectronics; Custom developed board. The book is not targeted for just either low-end or high-end microcontrollers. Instead, the book fully describes both, moving from the basics of microcontroller systems, to 8-bit devices and then to the 32-bit ones.In fact, the book targets well-renowned, commercially-available microcontrollers by the microelectronic leaders in the field. As for low-end 8-bit microcontrollers, the book reviews the widely-spread and well-assessed devices by Microchip (the PIC16 family) and by STMicroelectronics (the ST6 family). Instead, as for high-end 32-bit microcontrollers, the book presents the leading-edge M3 and M4 cores by ARM-Cortex and its implementation by STMicroelectronics (the STM32F4 series). The Book is very modular and most Chapters can be used as stand-alone mini text books (e.g., Chapter 3 – “8-bit microcontrollers”, Chapter 5 – “ARM-Cortex architectures”, Chapter 6 – “STM32 microcontroller”). Moreover, Chapter 4 and Chapter 7 provide a very useful insight to electronic circuits employing microcontrollers and on-board components, by means of the EasyPIC v7 board by Mikroelektronika (for PIC microcontrollers) and Nucleo board by STmicroelectronics (for the STM32 ARM-Cortex M4 microcontrollers).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction to 6800/6802 Microprocessor Systems: Hardware, Software and Experimentation introduces the reader to the features, characteristics, operation, and applications of the 6800/6802 microprocessor and associated family of devices. Many worked examples are included to illustrate the theoretical and practical aspects of the 6800/6802 microprocessor. Comprised of six chapters, this book begins by presenting several aspects of digital systems before introducing the concepts of fetching and execution of a microprocessor instruction. Details and descriptions of hardware elements (MPU, RAM, ROM, PIA, etc.) necessary for the design and implementation of dedicated systems are also considered. Subsequent chapters focus on how the 6800/6802 microprocessor can be programmed at the machine-code level and by assembler programming techniques; the principles involved in interfacing the MPU system to peripheral equipment; practical aspects of parallel and serial data transfer techniques using the PIA and ACIA, respectively; hardware and software features of the Motorola MEK6802D5E evaluation system. The book concludes by discussing details of 12 investigations that may be undertaken using the MEK6802D5E evaluation system. This monograph is intended for students, technicians, scientists, and engineers.

Book excerpt: The BBC micro: bit is capable of taking on a variety of roles including that of a powerful IoT device. In order to gain full access to its features and to external devices, however, you need to use C which delivers the speed which is crucial when you are writing programs to communicate with the outside world. The new V2 version of the micro: bit is fully covered in Micro: bit IoT in C, Second Edition, which now uses the highly popular VS Code for offline development. It covers how to get started the easy way by providing downloadable templates for both V1 and V2 of the micro: bit. Having started with the traditional "Blinky" program, the equivalent of "Hello World" for hardware, we are ready to discover how to control the micro: bit's I/O lines, exploring the basis of using the GPIO. For speed, however, we need to work directly with the raw hardware and also master memory mapping, pulse width modulation and other more sophisticated bus types. From here we can start connecting sensors using first the I2C bus, then by implementing a custom protocol for a one-wire bus, and eventually adding eight channels of 12-bit A-to-D with the SPI bus, which involves overcoming some subtle difficulties. We then look at serial connections, one of the oldest ways of connecting devices, but still very useful. The micro: bit lacks WiFi connectivity but using a low-cost device we enable a connection to the Internet via its serial port which allows it to become a server. Next we look at the micro: bit's LED display. This may only be 5x5, but it is very versatile, especially when you use pulse width modulation to vary the brightness level, something we demonstrate in a classic game, written of course in C. The book rounds out with a new chapter on the micro: bit's radio and the V2's sound capabilities. Harry Fairhead has worked with microprocessors, and electronics in general, for many years and is an enthusiastic proponent of the IoT. He is the author of Raspberry Pi IoT in C, which has recently been republished in its second edition, updated for Raspberry Pi 4, and of Raspberry Pi IoT In C With Linux Drivers. He has also co-authored Python versions of these books - Raspberry Pi IoT in Python Using GPIO Zero and Raspberry Pi IoT In Python With Linux Drivers. His own language of choice is C and he has also written Fundamental C: Getting Closer To The Machine and Applying C For The IoT With Linux.
