Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the aftermath of the Civil War, New Mexico Territory endured painful years of hardship and ongoing strife. During this turbulent period, a U.S. military officer stationed in the territory assembled an album of photographs, a series of still shots taken by one or more anonymous photographers. Now, some 150 years later, Hardship, Greed, and Sorrow reproduces the anonymous officer’s “souvenir album” in its totality. Offering an important glimpse of the American Southwest in the mid-1860s, the book opens with a thoughtful foreword by Jennifer Nez Denetdale, who considers the varied and lingering effects that settlement, conquest, and nineteenth-century photography had on the Apaches and Navajos. In her insightful introduction accompanying the photographs, curator and scholar Devorah Romanek places the photographs in historical context and explains their unusual provenance. As she points out, the 1866 album integrates a number of important themes in connection to the Civil War and Reconstruction periods, including the French intervention in New Mexico and the internment of Navajos at the Bosque Redondo Indian Reservation. The story of the album’s provenance reads like a mystery: some loose ends remain untied and some questions remain unanswered. In addition to containing what may be the earliest extant photographs of Navajo Indians, the album features both studio and field images of U.S. Army officers, Mexican politicians, and various sites throughout New Mexico. According to Romanek, a number of the album’s photographs have appeared in other publications but with scant attention to their original context or purpose. This compelling book reveals what we know about the collection, its compiler, and the photographer—or photographers—who captured such a fraught and complex moment in the history of the American Southwest.

Book excerpt: This all-new 20-minutes-a-day study of Nehemiah reminds readers that with God’s help, one person who is ready to do the impossible can change the world. Hope is not wishful thinking. It is a confident expectation for the future. Nehemiah knew how to live with true hope. After boldly requesting permission from the king to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem after the Babylonian exile, he restored the city and called his people back to God. Despite opposition on all sides, Nehemiah saw God transform a cup-bearer into a contractor, ruins into a city, and a wayward people into followers of God. As Bible teacher Lenya Heitzig reminds readers in this new Fresh Life study, God calls them to live boldly with a hope that only He can give.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Jamakkol prasanam is a distinguished technique of horary method of prediction. It is widely practiced in Tamilnadu and for the first time, this procedure is made available in English through this Book. By crossing this language barrier, the Jamakkol prasanam system offers a novel and simple method of astrological divination. This will benefit the astrological community residing in other parts of India and the world. This method is not alien to the conventional and traditional system of astrology. It encompasses all the rules, procedures and the practices of the Parasara system only. It differs in the approach with specific and special rules. The Jamakkol prasanam uses the three vital factors namely the Udhaya, the Aaruda and the Kavippu. These three fundamentals join the Jama planets and their interaction paves the way for the astrological predictions. This book teaches from the basis of the calculations involved in finding the Udhaya, the Aaruda and the Kavippu and also the procedure to fix the Jama planets. The Kaarakathuvas of the planets, the bhavas and the signs are important to arrive at exact results. So they are dealt exhaustively and exclusively. This will be helpful not only to the practitioners of the Jamakkol prasanam, but also to the astrologers in general. Case studies have been included to facilitate the easy comprehension of the Jamakkol system.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The “greater fool” theory of economics states that it’s possible to make money by buying paper (securities), whether overvalued or not, and later, selling it at a profit because there will always be an even greater fool willing to pay the higher price. Many described in this book profited by peddling such worthless junk to foolish investors. But for some people—Bernie Madoff, Norman Hsu, Sholam Weiss, and “Crazie Eddie” Antar, aka the “Darth Vader of Capitalism”—overvalued securities were not enough. Outright fraud was their way of life. History of Greed is the compelling inside story of the names you know—Charles Ponzi, Baron Rothschild, Lou Pearlman—and the names you don’t—Isaac Le Maire, the world’s first “naked” short-seller. It’s also our story—why we ignore the lessons of the past and fall prey, most every time, to the promise of easy money. For thousands of years, alchemists unsuccessfully tried to turn worthless base metals into gold. Where science failed at turning nothing into something, business succeeded. Sometimes we praise the creators of derivatives, collateral debt obligations, subprime mortgages, credit default swaps, or auction rate securities as Wall Street’s new financial wizards, the creators of “magic paper.” Other times, we vilify and prosecute them as scam artists. Sometimes, it’s hard to tell who is who. History of Greed reveals the inside secrets of how the markets really work, and how scam artists abuse them to gain an unfair edge or to outright steal. It describes how luftgescheft (“air business”), wizardry, dishonesty, and fraud are used to swindle people. Along with a comprehensive bibliography, History of Greed also details: 400 years of financial fraud—from everyday fraud to the odd and unusual Accounting fraud (phantom sales), stock option fraud (backdating), auction rate securities, hedge fund fraud, Ponzi schemes, promotion fraud (pump-and-dump scams), and money laundering How to detect fraudulent schemes How government regulation only fixes yesterday’s problems If it’s too good to be true, it probably is. If they say you can’t lose, you probably will. History of Greed shows that there really is no such thing as a free lunch, while also detailing how not to become the “greater fool.”

Book excerpt: Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad(as) of Qadian claimed to be the same Promised Messiah and Mahdi that the Holy Prophet Muhammad(sas) prophesied would come to rejuvenate Islam and restore its original lustre. During his early life, Mirza Ghulam Ahmad(as) saw a dream in which he handed a book of his own authorship to the Holy Prophet(sas). As soon as the book touched the Holy Prophet’s blessed hand, it transformed into a beautiful, honey-filled fruit which was then used to revive a dead person lying nearby. The Promised Messiah(as) was inspired with the following interpretation: Allah the Almighty then put it in my mind that the dead person in my dream was Islam and that Allah the Almighty would revive it at my hands through the spiritual power of the Holy Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. It is this very book – Barahin-e-Ahmadiyya – which is to be instrumental in revitalizing Islam in the latter days in accordance with the grand prophecy of the Holy Prophet(sas). Its subject matter is of universal importance and, as such, it will prove to be a source of lasting value for all readers. This significance of Barahin-e-Ahmadiyya cannot be overstated.

Book excerpt: The book itself is about the many incredible experiences Gareth has gone through since the death of his first wife, Tina, and the love she still has for him and the fact that she has never left his side. He knows whenever she is near him because he feels her presence and quite often hears her calling his name. The book tells about the grief and devastation of loss that we come to at a crossroads in our lives, where we are left with choices. Do we blame God and feel sorry for ourselves and our loss, or do we find God? Do we stay in the darkness, or do we find the light? This book is about a journey from the darkness into the light and the discovery that who we truly are is given freely from those who still love us in the realm we call heaven.

Book excerpt: High Crimes is journalist Michael Kodas's gripping account of life on top of the world--where man is every bit as deadly as Mother Nature. In the years following the publication of Into Thin Air, much has changed on Mount Everest. Among all the books documenting the glorious adventures in mountains around the world, none details how the recent infusion of wealthy climbers is drawing crime to the highest place on the planet. The change is caused both by a tremendous boom in traffic, and a new class of parasitic and predatory adventurer. It's likely that Jon Krakauer would not recognize the camps that he visited on Mount Everest almost a decade ago. This book takes readers on a harrowing tour of the criminal underworld on the slopes of the world's most majestic mountain. High Crimes describes two major expeditions: the tragic story of Nils Antezana, a climber who died on Everest after he was abandoned by his guide; as well as the author's own story of his participation in the Connecticut Everest Expedition, guided by George Dijmarescu and his wife and climbing partner, Lhakpa Sherpa. Dijmarescu, who at first seemed well-intentioned and charming, turned increasingly hostile to his own wife, as well as to the author and the other women on the team. By the end of the expedition, the three women could not travel unaccompanied in base camp due to the threat of violence. Those that tried to stand against the violence and theft found that the worst of the intimidation had followed them home to Connecticut. Beatings, thefts, drugs, prostitution, coercion, threats, and abandonment on the highest slopes of Everest and other mountains have become the rule rather than the exception. Kodas describes many such experiences, and explores the larger issues these stories raise with thriller-like intensity.
