Book Synopsis Lincoln County by : Ralph D. Triplett
Download or read book Lincoln County written by Ralph D. Triplett and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lincoln County was named for Pres. Abraham Lincoln, and the county seat, Hamlin, was likely named for his vice president, Hannibal Hamlin. Created out of Boone, Cabell, Kanawha, and Putnam Counties in 1867, Lincoln County is characterized by the geographic oddity of three north-flowing rivers: Guyandotte, Mud, and Coal. The county developed around its rivers and their tributaries, strategically using them to operate mills and transport goods. Timbering was its first major industry, and readers will see images of the log rafts and push boats that operated along these streams. Arrival of the railroad in the early 20th century opened another transportation artery. There was also a major oil boom around this time. Fossil fuels have remained important to the county's economy, particularly natural gas and coal. Lincoln County highlights what life was like in area communities such as West Hamlin, Branchland, Harts, Hamlin, Griffithsville, and Alum Creek.

Download or read book The Coal River Valley in the Civil War written by Michael B Graham and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2020-08-17 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A “compelling” account of the little-known bloody skirmishes that took place in this picturesque part of West Virginia (Civil War Monitor). The three rivers that make up the Coal River Valley—Big, Little and Coal—were named by explorer John Peter Salling (or Salley) for the coal deposits found along their banks. More than one hundred years later, the picturesque valley that would separate from Virginia a short time later was witness to a multitude of bloody skirmishes between Confederate and Union forces in the Civil War. Often-overlooked battles at Boone Court House, Coal River, Pond Fork, and Kanawha Gap introduced the beginning of “total war” tactics years before General Sherman used them in his March to the Sea. Join historian Michael Graham as he expertly details the compelling human drama of the bitterly contested Coal River Valley region during the War Between the States. Includes illustrations

Soon after, I meet and marry the love of my life, Ralph. Will I be able to carry a baby in spite of what my doctors warned? I tell of my first sermon at age twenty and ministering in Page, West Virginia. I oversaw the building of a new church in North Eaton, Ohio, and I tell of my time spent there. My new, fast-growing ministry is blessed with great music and zeal. God inspires the birthing of this book. Life of Miracles will chronicle the many miracles God has performed for me and the ministry.
