Book excerpt: The investigation was conducted to study the effects of foreign object damage on the residual tensile and tensile fatigue strength of a composite material, unidirectional boron-aluminum-6061. Curves were generated for various levels of tensile prestress during the ballistic impaction which related velocity of impact with the residual tensile strength of the specimens. The composite material was further characterized by tensile fatigue tests, radiography, and photography. A similar damage and fatigue analysis was done for Ti-6Al-4V to provide baseline data with which to compare the composite. All tests were carried out in lab air and at room temperature. It was concluded that for a given level of impact damage B/Al-6061 suffers much greater total loss and percentage loss of residual tensile strength than does Ti-6-4. Also, a fracture mechanics model fits the failure stress versus crack length data for B/Al-6061 resulting from hard-body impact. (Author).

Book excerpt: This study investigated the effects of soft body impact damage on the residual tensile and axial fatigue strength of Boron-6061 Aluminum composite material. Unidirectional B-6061 Al specimens were impacted with room temperature vulcanizing rubber (RTV) spheres in a powder charge gun facility. Specimens were also impacted under five different tensile loads. Residual tensile strength versus impact velocity plots were generated for each prestress level. The composite was further characterized by axial fatigue and nondestructive tests. All tests were carried out at room temperature. A similar damage and residual strength analysis was done for Ti-6Al-4V to provide baseline data against which to compare the composite. It was concluded that Ti-6Al-4V is much more resistant to impact damage than unidirectional B-6061 Al. A fracture mechanic analysis is presented and a fracture mechanics model proposed for unidirectional B-6061 Al impacted specimens.

Book excerpt: The foreign-object damage problem associated with jet engines was investigated by impacting both titanium (6Al-4V) and boron-aluminum specimens with either steel or room-temperature vulcanizing rubber spheres to simulate the two principal types of ingested foreign objects. To simulate engine operating conditions, some specimens were impacted while under a tensile load. Results indicate that a prestressed composite suffers much greater damage than simple cantilevered specimens. Ti-6Al-4V exhibits excellent impact resistance, loosing only 10 percent of its ultimate tensile strength up to the highest prestresses and impact velocities. Composite specimens react much differently depending on the type of impactor. Steel spheres cause severe damage at very low impact velocities. Room-temperature vulcanizing rubber, on the other hand, causes little damage up to a velocity threshold. Above this point, specimen failure was observed at some prestresses upon impact. The residual tensile and low-cycle fatigue strength of both boron-aluminum and titanium was documented for various impacting velocities and prestresses. A fracture-mechanics analysis is presented which successfully predicts the effects of room-temperature vulcanizing rubber impact on boron-aluminum composites.

Nonstandard thin-sheet Charpy and Izod impact tests and standard full-size Charpy impact tests were conducted on composites containing unidirectional 0.10-,0.14-, and 0.20-mm-(4-, 5.6-, and 8-mil- ) diameter boron fibers in 1100, 2024, 5052, and 6061 Al matrices. Impact failure modes of B/Al are proposed in an attempt to describe the mechanisms involved and to provide insight for maximizing impact resistance. The impact strength of B/Al was significantly increased by proper selection of materials and processing. The use of a ductile matrix (1100 Al) and large-diameter (8-mil) boron fibers gave the highest impact strengths. This combination resulted in improved energy absorption through matrix shear deformation and multiple fiber breakage.
