Book excerpt: Terrell Michael O'Shannon worked at Suttons sawmill as a foreman and Colleen Bridgett Kelly was a governess for the Sutton children. There they met and fell in love in a storybook romance and later a solid marriage. Their aspirations to have a large farm and many sons to help them work it took an unexpected turn. They had three daughters, twins Lorna and Jenny, and six years later Sarah. In time they ultimately accumulated many acres, but the extent of their farming ended up with a horse, a dog, some chickens and barn cats. Their lives were fulfilled and their joys were many through the years. Lorna married a lawyer. They live in Glenwick, about fifty miles from home and have four children. Jenny lives about a half mile from home and has one daughter. Sarah built her house in the back acres of the old homestead, and has two children. Now the grandchildren arrive. Read the next seven books in this series to learn about where their lives take them through the years.

Book Synopsis The Omaha Language and the Omaha Way by : Mark Awakuni-Swetland
Download or read book The Omaha Language and the Omaha Way written by Mark Awakuni-Swetland and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2022-01-31 with total page 736 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published through the Recovering Languages and Literacies of the Americas initiative, supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation The Omaha Language and the Omaha Way provides a comprehensive textbook for students, scholars, and laypersons to learn to speak and understand the language of the Omaha Nation. Mark Awakuni-Swetland, Vida Woodhull Stabler, Aubrey Streit Krug, Loren Frerichs, and Rory Larson have collaborated with elder speakers, including Alberta Grant Canby, Emmaline Walker Sanchez, Marcella Woodhull Cavou, and Donna Morris Parker, to write this book. The original and creative pedagogical method used in this textbook--teaching the Omaha language through Omaha culture--consists of a structured series of lesson plans. It is the result of a generous collaboration between the Department of Anthropology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the Umóⁿhoⁿ Language and Culture Center at Umóⁿhoⁿ Nation Public School in Macy, Nebraska. The method draws on the accumulated wisdom and knowledge of Awakuni-Swetland to illustrate the Omaha values of balance and integration. The contents are shaped into two parts, each of which complements the other--just as the Earth and Sky do. This textbook features an introduction by Awakuni-Swetland on the history and phonology of the Omaha language; lessons from the Umóⁿhoⁿ Language and Culture Center at Macy, with a writing system quick sheet; situation quick sheets; lessons on games; lessons on spring, summer, fall, and winter; an Omaha language resource list; and a glossary in the standard Macy orthography of the Omaha language. The textbook also includes cultural lessons in the language by Awakuni-Swetland and lessons from the Omaha language class at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The Omaha Language and the Omaha Way offers a linguistic foundation for tribal members, students, scholars, and laypersons, featuring Omaha community lessons, the standard Macy orthography, and UNL orthography all under one cover.
Book Synopsis When Jack Was with Us by : B. K. Holway
Download or read book When Jack Was with Us written by B. K. Holway and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2009-05 with total page 658 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urban realism in the tradition of E.L. Doctorow, William Kennedy, Philip Roth and Jimmy Breslin, "When Jack Was With Us" immerses the reader in neighborhood life in New York City from the late 1950's through the late 1960's. Unlike many other novels by Baby Boomers, this novel makes no attempt to sugarcoat or nostaligize; it presents life as the author saw it while growing up, in all its beauty and all its brutality. There is no single protagonist; a number of characters whose lives intertwine each seek to make the best out of their lives amid the rich and often volatile ethnic tapestry of New York, against the backdrop of social change as the novel moves from the somnolent 1950's through the turbulent 1960's. Each character struggles and finds his/her damnation or redemption amid a city that personifies a nation in flux. It is a "coming of age" not only for the characters but for the greater American collective psyche.

Download or read book Gadsby written by Ernest Vincent Wright and published by WETZEL PUBLISHING CO., INC.. This book was released on 2014-12-11 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Example in this ebook The entire manuscript of this story was written with the E type-bar of the typewriter tied down; thus making it impossible for that letter to be printed. This was done so that none of that vowel might slip in, accidentally; and many did try to do so! There is a great deal of information as to what Youth can do, if given a chance; and, though it starts out in somewhat of an impersonal vein, there is plenty of thrill, rollicking comedy, love, courtship, marriage, patriotism, sudden tragedy, a determined stand against liquor, and some amusing political aspirations in a small growing town. In writing such a story,—purposely avoiding all words containing the vowel E, there are a great many difficulties. The greatest of these is met in the past tense of verbs, almost all of which end with "—ed." Therefore substitutes must be found; and they are very few. This will cause, at times, a somewhat monotonous use of such words as "said;" for neither "replied," "answered" nor "asked" can be used. Another difficulty comes with the elimination of the common couplet "of course," and its very common connective, "consequently;" which will, unavoidably cause "bumpy spots." The numerals also cause plenty of trouble, for none between six and thirty are available. When introducing young ladies into the story, this is a real barrier; for what young woman wants to have it known that she is over thirty? And this restriction on numbers, of course taboos all mention of dates. Many abbreviations also must be avoided; the most common of all, "Mr." and "Mrs." being particularly troublesome; for those words, if read aloud, plainly indicate the E in their orthography. As the vowel E is used more than five times oftener than any other letter, this story was written, not through any attempt to attain literary merit, but due to a somewhat balky nature, caused by hearing it so constantly claimed that "it can't be done; for you cannot say anything at all without using E, and make smooth continuity, with perfectly grammatical construction—" so 'twas said. Many may think that I simply "drop" the E's, filling the gaps with apostrophes. A perusal of the book will show that this is not so. All words used are complete; are correctly spelled and properly used. This has been accomplished through the use of synonyms; and, by so twisting a sentence around as to avoid ambiguity. The book may prove a valuable aid to school children in English composition. People, as a rule, will not stop to realize what a task such an attempt actually is. As I wrote along, in long-hand at first, a whole army of little E's gathered around my desk, all eagerly expecting to be called upon. But gradually as they saw me writing on and on, without even noticing them, they grew uneasy; and, with excited whisperings amongst themselves, began hopping up and riding on my pen, looking down constantly for a chance to drop off into some word; for all the world like sea-birds perched, watching for a passing fish! But when they saw that I had covered 138 pages of typewriter size paper, they slid off onto the floor, walking sadly away, arm in arm; but shouting back: "You certainly must have a hodge-podge of a yarn there without Us! Why, man! We are in every story ever written, hundreds of thousands of times! This is the first time we ever were shut out!" Pronouns also caused trouble; for such words as he, she, they, them, theirs, her, herself, myself, himself, yourself, etc., could not be utilized. But a particularly annoying obstacle comes when, almost through a long paragraph you can find no words with which to continue that line of thought; hence, as in Solitaire, you are "stuck," and must go way back and start another; which, of course, must perfectly fit the preceding context. To be continue in this ebook
