Book excerpt: Advance Praise for A Happy Journey "We could all do with a little Larry in our lives. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. May you relish every word as I did." -Dr. Martha Lee, Clinical Sexologist, Eros Coaching, Singapore "The stories he shares are all around us; they are in everyone we meet and interact with. Larry's true gift isn't the great friend he is or the fine example of an American that he is, but rather the storyteller, traveler, and humanist." -Captain Kurt Hummeldorf, DC, USN, Manassas, Virginia "Larry's book is provocative and captivating reading. He has an unusual power of observation, a love for people, and an enthusiasm for adventure." -Jacqueline Delaverdac DeMent, Kalamazoo, Michigan Part travelogue, part geography and history lesson, and all mixed with subtle humor, A Happy Journey captures the experiences of author Larry Welch. An expatriate living in Singapore and Thailand who traveled to many countries, Welch narrates tales about real people who seem to be a degree removed from the ordinary. The fifty-three vignettes, first appearing in his electronic column, "On the run ...," reflect humanity's rich diversity-from entertaining ghosts to riding camels to monkeys begging for peanuts on a hotel balcony in Malaysia.

Book excerpt: What makes a nation happy? Is one country's sense of happiness the same as another's? In the last two decades, psychologists and economists have learned a lot about who's happy and who isn't. The Dutch are, the Romanians aren't, and Americans are somewhere in between... After years of going to the world's least happy countries, Eric Weiner, a veteran foreign correspondent, decided to travel and evaluate each country's different sense of happiness and discover the nation that seemed happiest of all. ·He discovers the relationship between money and happiness in tiny and extremely wealthy Qatar (and it's not a good one) ·He goes to Thailand, and finds that not thinking is a contented way of life. ·He goes to the tiny Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan, and discovers they have an official policy of Gross National Happiness! ·He asks himself why the British don't do happiness? In Weiner's quest to find the world's happiest places, he eats rotten Icelandic shark, meditates in Bangalore, visits strip clubs in Bangkok and drinks himself into a stupor in Reykjavik. Full of inspired moments, The Geography of Bliss accomplishes a feat few travel books dare and even fewer achieve: to make you happier.
Book Synopsis Healthy Aging and You: Your Journey to Becoming Happy, Healthy & Fit by : Nicholas S. Prukop
Download or read book Healthy Aging and You: Your Journey to Becoming Happy, Healthy & Fit written by Nicholas S. Prukop and published by . This book was released on 2021-09 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The premise of this book is to illuminate and clarify some of the recent information on healthy aging as it is evolving, and also to provide insight, guidance, help, and yes, even wisdom for those of you who wish to start NOW down the road to becoming happy, healthy and fit as you get "older - and not old". It has been said that we "spend our health accumulating our wealth, and spend our wealth to get our health back once it's gone". This is just wrong in my book. Why not live and maximize your opportunities for health and wealth TODAY and shed the regret, guilt, anguish and pain of what we COULD have done differently. The past is gone - we cannot change it. Living in the present is the only sure way to begin this journey of becoming happy, healthy and fit for life - so why not start here and now? We are the new pioneers of a new paradigm on aging and I personally can't wait to find out what is possible - for ALL of us! I want to be able to run a 6 minute mile on my 80th birthday. What do you want to be able to do at a comparable age? Walk on the Great Wall of China? Fly a plane? Or just play with your grandchildren? Take a step into your future by deciding TODAY to examine yourself openly and honestly - and see what happens. You could be in for a BIG and happy surprise!
Download or read book The Happy Traveler written by Jaime Kurtz and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-05-01 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Travel is one of the most sought-after experiences in life. It has the singular ability to capture our imaginations, serving as a canvas onto which we project our deepest desires and needs: escape, relaxation, transcendence, interpersonal connection, cultural education, and more. Few things hold such a privileged place, yet until now, there has been no instruction manual for how to make the most of travelling, be it to an exotic country or to the local beach. In The Happy Traveler: Unpacking the Secrets of Better Vacations, psychology professor Jaime Kurtz applies the large and ever-growing body of research on happiness and decision-making to enhance the experience of travel. An avid explorer, study abroad instructor, teacher, and happiness researcher, Dr. Kurtz shows how anyone who has a vacation in his or her future can create the most meaningful, fulfilling, and joyful experiences possible. When the price of travel is daunting, getting the most "bang for your buck", both financially and emotionally, is essential to an ideal travel experience. With a sense of humor and adventure, Dr. Kurtz provides guidance on how to craft your perfect trip, boost your excitement before your trip even begins, and actively immerse yourself in a new culture while unplugging from your technological ties to home. She also explains how to best cherish and share travel moments, how to ease back into your daily life upon returning, and how to carry the secrets of happy travel into every day. This is a must-have guide if you are looking to make the most of your precious vacation days.
Book Synopsis Happy Travels with a ‘Dodgy’ Heart by : David Cross
Download or read book Happy Travels with a ‘Dodgy’ Heart written by David Cross and published by Author House. This book was released on 2012-08-03 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is not a guidebook, though I hope it gives the reader some ideas on places worth seeing, accommodation worth considering, and decent restaurants worth dining in. It does not normally give a list of possible places to stay (only places I have experienced myself being included), but at the end of each chapter, there will be a Practicalities page containing the following: 1 Useful websites on places, maps, and transport. In general, sites relevant to more than one chapter will be found the first time they are relevant and are referenced in later chapters. 2 Accommodation on these pages will be only where I have stayed. I go for cheaper places when I travel alone, although I nearly always choose en-suite rooms as I got older, and moderately cheap when I went with Pam. In general, absence of comment means it is OK, bearing this in mind. 3 Restaurants are only mentioned on these pages if they are particularly good, either absolutely or in terms of value for moneyor if definitely not recommended. 4 Must-sees appear in the chapters themselves but will be summarised on these pages. The index is based on my historic fury at finding pages, only to get a totally uninformative mention of the place in passing. Text (normal print) references are meant to show the first or only page with information about the place. Those planning holidays may find it more helpful to go immediately to pages shown in italic print, where they will often find helpful URLs. I have checked all the multitude of URLs in this book in February 2012, inserting a lot of new ones in place of dead sites. Occasionally my comments on a site may be a bit dodgy now, but there are some great sites here. Im not sure how I overcame temptation to spend ages just looking at some!
