Book excerpt: Blessed Elizabeth of the Trinity (Elizabeth Catez) is a mystic of our times, who entered Carmel in 1901 at the age of twenty-one, and died there five years later. Her biblical spirituality, based on the epistles of her "dear Saint Paul" and the mystery of the divine indwelling, has inspired countless Christians. This second of three volumes of her Complete Works contains all of Elizabeth's surviving letters from Carmel, along with 8 photos. In simple and tender language, writing to friends and family, Elizabeth returns again and again to the great themes of her spirituality: the indwelling Trinity, silence and solitude, living by love, becoming a "praise of glory" (laudem gloriae) by sharing in the dying and rising of Jesus Christ. Here too we find many of her best-known sayings, e.g., "I have found my heaven on earth, for heaven is God, and God is in my soul." In his introductions and careful notes, Father Conrad De Meester, O.C.D., explains the background of each of Elizabeth's letters from Carmel, most of which have never before appeared in English. Anne Englund Nash continues the style set in the first volume of the Complete Works, presenting a translation that reflects both the literary nuances and spirit of the original French texts.

Book excerpt: Memories of a Lacerated Heart gives us a painful insight into one of the most brutal and historically under-reported wars, and its effects not just on the country but on the mind of a patriotic and unassuming army officer. In 1947 the Indian subcontinent was split into two countries, India and Pakistan. East and West Pakistan were geographically separated by the larger nation of India and the country was ruled by martial law for the first 25 years after gaining independence. The governing of the two wings of the country, hundreds of miles apart, was a logistical challenge and the cultural, economic, geographical and language differences became divisive. East Pakistan had the larger population, albeit in a smaller area, but West Pakistan held the political and economic power. East Pakistan secured the majority of seats in the 1970 elections but, despite winning the majority vote, it was deprived of the right to govern. This lead to a bloody civil war that later escalated into a conflict between Pakistan and India. This is the memoir of one Pakistani Army officer who witnessed the events first-hand and suffered as a consequence of being a patriotic young company commander who passionately wanted to prevent the break-up of his country. It is a formal collection of his diary entries documenting his experiences during the civil war, the subsequent conflict with India, and as a prisoner of war. While still a war memoir, it is also the raw and heartfelt account of a man separated by duty from his loved ones, and ordered, along with his young soldiers, to fight a pointless war ruthlessly orchestrated by generals and politicians.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thirty years ago, I was afraid of surrendering my life completely to trusting in the Divine. This fear is what stopped me from growing in my faith and crippled me into believing that if I did, something terrible would befall on me or my family, as a way of testing my faith. I was afraid to practice my faith and my heart was contaminated with guilt, anger and inferiority. Then something happened. I took a leap of faith and decided to join my husband in a catechist program that was being delivered at our church. Little did I know that this would be the catalyst that would move me in a direction for a new life. The program taught the meaning of scriptures and how to read and meditate upon them. One night I opened the bible to a scripture passage found in 1 John 4:18. The words, "Perfect Love casts out fear" suddenly jumped off the page and spoke to my heart directly. I knew that the Lord was speaking to me through this scripture passage and He released my fears. With this new found freedom I embarked on a journey that helped me discover my connection with God and the many ways in which He communicated to me. This book reveals my journey as God revealed His presence to me though signs and symbols, in my journal writing, meditation, prayer, past memories, through His creation in nature, the stillness around us, and through everyday miracles. In a personal way he continues to speak to me through life and death experiences. Along with my sorrows, he fills me with joy through his His peace, grace and PERFECT LOVE.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “That was the moment, the turning point. That was the moment I fully understood the depth of Daddy’s love for me. Similar to the love of Christ, I knew his lack of consciousness—or even more realistically, the hostility of death’s doorstep—could not interfere with my father’s matchless love for his only daughter. While Christ’s suffering made me realize His love for me, my daddy’s suffering made me realize my love for him.” Losing a parent is never easy. Losing a good parent is even crueler. But losing an admirable parent comparable to Christ, it’s an extremely bitter truth to accept. Written from the viewpoint of an undeniable Daddy’s girl, Because His Heart was Strong entwines the captivating journey of Rick Owens’ final decade of life through her own story, including the remarkable courage he demonstrated amidst prolonged suffering and the sheer legacy he imparted in death, highlighting the faith he placed in his Savior through it all.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Christians, we know that we are new creations in Jesus. So we try to act differently, hoping this will make us more like Him. But changing our outward behavior doesn’t change our hearts. Only by God’s grace can we be transformed internally. Renovation of the Heart lays a biblical foundation for understanding what best-selling author Dallas Willard calls the “transformation of the spirit”—a divine process that “brings every element in our being, working from inside out, into harmony with the will of God.” This fresh approach to spiritual growth explains the biblical reasons why Christians need to undergo change in six aspects of life: thought, feeling, will, body, social context, and soul. Willard also outlines a general pattern of transformation in each area, not as a sterile formula but as a practical process that you can follow without the guilt or perfectionism so many Christians wrestle with. Don’t settle for complacency. Accept the challenge Renovation of the Heart offers to become an intentional apprentice of Jesus Christ, changing daily as you walk with Him.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: SOUND OF THE CROWD: A DISCOGRAPHY OF THE '80s is the ultimate record collector's guide to the 1980s. In the era of multi-formatting, picture discs, coloured vinyl, multiple remixes, funny shaped records and tiny CDs you could lose down the back of the sofa, this book lists every format of every single, EP and album released in the UK in the 1980s by over 140 of the decade's biggest acts, from ABBA to Paul Young. This fourth edition has been fully revised and expanded to include even more acts than ever before, with additional sections to cover Band Aid-style charity congregations and compilation albums from the early '80s K-Tel efforts through to the Now That's What I Call Music series and its competitors. Compiled by Steve Binnie, editor of the '80s music website Sound of the Crowd and writer, producer and co-host of the unconventional '80s chart show Off The Chart, broadcast weekly on Mad Wasp Radio.
