Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An epic fiction drenched in reality. Devils Paintbrush tells the life story a young boy who grows up in a violent and abusive home within the Projects of Brooklyn, Baltimore during the 1960s. Then, as a young man, he once again finds himself in another hostile environment South Vietnam. Somehow he survives both worlds. Decades after receiving The Bronze Star in combat, Ken Callahans long suppressed memories and fractured emotions compel him to enter yet another threatening battlefield and engage a very different enemy a foe deadlier than any Viet Cong or bird-eating tarantula he ever confronted as a younger man. This new battlefield is the private office of the Veteran Administrations top PTSD clinician. His new enemy is himself. Within the relative safety of this clinicians office, Ken is reluctantly dragged-back in time to unearth decades of buried memories of war. Thats when the PTSD professional community becomes stunned as they discover Kens combat experience was not as lethal as the domestic violence and sexual abuse he endured at the hands of a disturbed older brother and sinfully wicked mother long before he even went to war. In short, Ken Callahans PTSD was deeply entrenched well before he stepped foot on the battlefields of South Vietnam. Discovering the truth about his own past proves to be challenging enough, but in order to accept such truth, Ken must cross a line from which there is no return. The man who ultimately emerges is not the same Bronze Star recipient who reluctantly enters PTSD treatment; nor are the people he touches along the way. Only the qualities of a Devils Paintbrush can provide the caliber of personal resilience needed throughout every step of Ken Callahans life-long journey. Readers of this fictionalized, true story will be either shocked and disgusted or enlightened and educated. There is no safe place between these two extremes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comfort during resting, half-closed eyes when feeding on highly palatable feed, or vigorous tail wagging when being brushed are some of the positive indicators that can be used to evaluate the quality of the environment in which domestic animals live. This has been a radical shift from the past as, until now, the welfare assessment on farms has meant assessing negative indicators, namely the number of lame animals, presence of lesions, or frequency of agonistic behaviours. However, the latest research confirms that the absence of a problem or of suffering does not necessarily imply that the animals are experiencing a good life and that their level of welfare is high. To guarantee high welfare standards, animals should experience positive conditions that allow them to live a “life worth living”, and positive indicators are needed to identify these conditions. This Special Issue focuses on the development and validation of indicators of positive welfare or on the refinement of the existing ones, as well as on the identification of suitable living conditions for providing positive welfare to farmed and companion animals.

An amateur botanist and painter, she journeyed to the world's farthest reaches, to its ancient and new civilizations. She also wrote one of the major travel accounts of the Victorian period. Written after she retired from travel because of ill health, Recollections of a Happy Life incorporates journals and letters from throughout her travelling years. The huge manuscript left at her death was reduced and edited by her sister and published in 1892 in three volumes. Volume 1 is reprinted here. In a new Introduction, Susan Morgan raises issues of gender, imperialism, and the Victorian approach to science.

Book excerpt: Reality is harsh. Its the fine line that makes up how the rules go for us in life. There are not always easy rules that you can slide with or fun rules that you can twist and make your own. There are however some ways that reality can be just too much for one human to handle and thats when a human gets lost in a world called FANTASY! Fantasy is not harsh. Fantasy is easy, its simple, and it can make life a game: it can turn almost anything into a playground. Its the place where I met a guy, the guy that makes a big change in my life and turns my life from real life into fantasy. He shows me how to make the the fine line clear enough so that I could walk the line without falling. But if I do fall I know that he will catch me. So what is my Fantasy? It all started with my family vacation one summer. The vacation I will not soon forget and the boy that will forever change my life. My name is Ellen Smith. My story is unlike anything I could have imagined. The ending seems to never come. The grave is only a dream. Is it a dream or a nightmare? Is it fantasy or reality? I am not really sure, so lets start at the beginning.

Book excerpt: This book is a collection of shorter books and other writings by the same author. Using a literary term, the book may be called a collectanea, or, using a common term, simply a potpouri of writings. The subjects of the writings are varied and mixed. The reader will find mysteries and unsolved homicides in High Stakes, the story about the dark side of professional gambling. The reader can read in The Money Changers about greed, cheating and fraud in the market place, including some of the sophisticated methods now used by predators to cheat others. The author has included in these stories a mix of satire and humor about some current social and political issues. Various sins are necessarily part of the subject matter of these stories. Sex is not a significant ingredient in the story mix, although it might have flavored or spiced up the other ingredients in the recipe. The author has also included in this collection and shares with readers items of a personal nature, including letters written to his children while they were at school away from home and parables written primarily for children.

And Smokey Jack loves his new life with his momma and the Colonel, the kindly old couple who recently adopted him, even though he fears he will not live up to his Colonel's high standards, something Smokey wants more than anything in the whole world. But their happy existence is interrupted when a mysterious blue mist engulfs Smokey during his first hunt with the Colonel, a mist accompanied by the unnatural-smelling Not-fox and a disembodied voice singing a childish tune. Leading to the night Smokey gets caught in a flash flood with Jasmine, the little girl who lives down the street from him. But the trouble really starts when Jasmine's older sister, Lily, dives into the quickly deepening current of Huntsman Creek after them. The Colonel can only watch as his young friends are washed into the floodplain's drainage pipe leading under the street! And in their desperate struggle for survival, the trio find themselves washed up against a strange convex object shaped much like an eye, housing an evil that should have been left alone.

Book excerpt: Do you ever wonder whether God even cares if we’re happy? This world can be so hard, and we aren’t promised an easy road. But that’s not the whole story. The Bible is filled with verses that prove that ours is a God who not only loves celebrations but also desperately wants his children to experience happiness. Why else would he go to the lengths he did to ensure our eternal happiness in his presence? We know that we will experience unimaginable joy and happiness in heaven, but that doesn’t mean we can’t also experience joy and happiness here on earth. In Happiness, noted theologian Randy Alcorn (bestselling author of Heaven) dispels centuries of misconceptions about happiness, including downright harmful ideas like the prosperity gospel, and provides indisputable proof that God not only wants us to be happy, he commands it. Randy covers questions like: How can I cultivate happiness in my life? What’s the difference between joy and happiness? Can good things become idols that steal our happiness? Is seeking happiness selfish? How can I achieve happiness through gratitude? What does it look like to receive God’s grace? The most definitive study on the subject of happiness to date, this book is a paradigm-shifting wake-up call for the church and Christians everywhere.
