Book excerpt: Distribution of anaphora in natural language and the complexity of its resolution have resulted in a wide range of disciplines focusing their research on this grammatical phenomenon. It has emerged as one of the most productive topics of multi- and int- disciplinary research such as cognitive science, artificial intelligence and human language technology, theoretical, cognitive, corpus and computational linguistics, philosophy of language, psycholinguistics and cognitive psychology. Anaphora plays a major role in understanding a language and also accounts for the cohesion of a text. Correct interpretation of anaphora is necessary in all high-level natural language pr- essing applications. Given the growing importance of the study of anaphora in the last few decades, it has emerged as the frontier area of research. This is evident from the high-quality th submissions received for the 7 DAARC from where the 10 excellent reports on - search findings are selected for this volume. These are the regular papers that were presented at DAARC.

Book excerpt: Identifying and stopping the dissemination of fabricated news, hate speech, or deceptive information camouflaged as legitimate news poses a significant technological hurdle. This book presents emergent methodologies and technological approaches of natural language processing through machine learning for counteracting the spread of fake news and hate speech on social media platforms. • Covers various approaches, algorithms, and methodologies for fake news and hate speech detection. • Explains the automatic detection and prevention of fake news and hate speech through paralinguistic clues on social media using artificial intelligence. • Discusses the application of machine learning models to learn linguistic characteristics of hate speech over social media platforms. • Emphasizes the role of multilingual and multimodal processing to detect fake news. • Includes research on different optimization techniques, case studies on the identification, prevention, and social impact of fake news, and GitHub repository links to aid understanding. The text is for professionals and scholars of various disciplines interested in fake news and hate speech detection.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More and more historical texts are becoming available in digital form. Digitization of paper documents is motivated by the aim of preserving cultural heritage and making it more accessible, both to laypeople and scholars. As digital images cannot be searched for text, digitization projects increasingly strive to create digital text, which can be searched and otherwise automatically processed, in addition to facsimiles. Indeed, the emerging field of digital humanities heavily relies on the availability of digital text for its studies. Together with the increasing availability of historical texts in digital form, there is a growing interest in applying natural language processing (NLP) methods and tools to historical texts. However, the specific linguistic properties of historical texts -- the lack of standardized orthography, in particular -- pose special challenges for NLP. This book aims to give an introduction to NLP for historical texts and an overview of the state of the art in this field. The book starts with an overview of methods for the acquisition of historical texts (scanning and OCR), discusses text encoding and annotation schemes, and presents examples of corpora of historical texts in a variety of languages. The book then discusses specific methods, such as creating part-of-speech taggers for historical languages or handling spelling variation. A final chapter analyzes the relationship between NLP and the digital humanities. Certain recently emerging textual genres, such as SMS, social media, and chat messages, or newsgroup and forum postings share a number of properties with historical texts, for example, nonstandard orthography and grammar, and profuse use of abbreviations. The methods and techniques required for the effective processing of historical texts are thus also of interest for research in other domains. Table of Contents: Introduction / NLP and Digital Humanities / Spelling in Historical Texts / Acquiring Historical Texts / Text Encoding and Annotation Schemes / Handling Spelling Variation / NLP Tools for Historical Languages / Historical Corpora / Conclusion / Bibliography

Book excerpt: Research on discourse (or text) processing has only recently come into its own. It builds on the work of text analysis which has a long and distinguished history, but modern developments in psychology (e.g. memory research), artificial intelligence, linguistics and philosophy have contributed to this emergence in the last decade as a lively and promising research area. This book contains 46 selected and edited contributions from the International Symposium held in Fribourg in 1981, and represents a truly international overview of the developments in research on written and oral discourse. The contributions have been grouped according to problem area and not according to methodology, with the intention of focusing on the important issues in the field of discourse processing and of showing how diverse approaches contribute to a better understanding of the problems involved. The main themes are: text structure, coherence, inference, memory processes, attention and control, goal perspectives, and educational implications.

Book excerpt: Every year since 2002, the linguistic development environment NooJ has been enhanced with new online features that allow social scientists to develop new applications and explore new domains. The 2011 conference was no exception and the arrival of v3.0 has brought many more features and a new range of applications, from the analysis of ancient Arabic and old English texts to the analysis of conversations held by the Mars500 mission’s astronauts. At the 2011 conference, members of the European Meta-Net CESAR project announced that NooJ will soon be available Open Source and will become the de-facto standard tool for Corpus processing in European research in Social Science. Today, NooJ is used as a research tool in over 30 academic and research centers in the world and there are NooJ modules available for over 20 languages. The international NooJ conference is organized every year; 50 participants present their work in the domains of Linguistic formalization, Corpus processing and Natural Language Processing applications. The present volume contains a selection of papers from the NooJ 2011 International Conference which was held from 13–15 June 2011 in Dubrovnik, Croatia. This volume presents problems dealing with machine translation, information extraction, processing of multi-word units, automatic disambiguation, semantic analysis, and psychological and literature analysis of various corpora.

The 71 papers presented were selected from 228 submissions and focus on hybrid big data processing. Since information processing has acted as an important research domain in science and technology today, it is the right time to develop deeper and wider use of hybrid information processing, especially information processing for big data. There are more remaining issues waiting for solving, such as classification and systemization of big data, objective tracking and behavior understanding in big multimedia data, encoding and compression of big data.
