Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Dr. Bahrke and Dr. Nohr introduce psychotherapists and psychoanalysts to how they can work with Katathym Imaginative Psychotherapy (KIP) at the current level of psychodynamic knowledge. The method is a method of psychodynamic psychotherapy introduced by Hanscarl Leuner in 1955 under the name "Katathymes Bilderleben" and further developed since then. The authors clearly show the state of the art in case studies and in a systematic presentation. About the method: How does KIP work? The therapeutic practice is based on the inclusion of imaginations in the therapy process. Unconscious desires, conflicts, their defense as well as the transference relationship are thus symbolically illustrated. The imaginations stimulated and accompanied by the therapist are a valuable supplement to the psychodynamic process of understanding and, in addition to conversation, open up an affect-related, motivation-promoting access route in the treatment of many disturbance patterns in short and long-term therapies. In contrast to other psychotherapy methods that use imaginations, imaginations in KIP are understood as a component of relational work, taking transference and resistance into account. Written for ... Psychodynamically working psychotherapists, psychiatrists and psychoanalysts who work with imaginations, as well as all colleagues interested in figurative language, metaphors and dreams.

Book excerpt: Jung's Technique of Active Imagination and Desoille's Directed Waking Dream Method brings together Carl Jung’s active imagination and Robert Desoille’s "rêve éveillé dirigé/directed waking dream" method (RED). It studies the historical development of these approaches in Central Europe in the first half of the 20th century and explores their theoretical similarities and differences, proposing an integrated framework of clinical practice. The book aims to study the wider European context of the 1900s which influenced the development of both Jung’s and Desoille’s methods. This work compares the spatial metaphors of interiority used by both Jung and Desoille to describe the traditional concept of inner psychic space in the waking dreams of Jung’s active imagination and Desoille’s RED. It also attempts a broader theoretical comparison between the procedural aspects of both RED and active imagination by identifying commonalities and divergences between the two approaches. This book is a unique contribution to analytical psychology and will be of great interest for academics, researchers and post-graduate students interested in the use of imagination and mental imagery in analysis, psychotherapy and counselling. The book’s historical focus will be of particular relevance to Jungian and Desoillian scholars since it is the first of its kind to trace the connections between the two schools and it gives a detailed account of Desoille’s early life and his first written works. This book was a Gradiva Award nominee for 2021.

It is written not only for specialists in the field of psychotherapy and coaching, but also for the general public. With the authors as specialists in the field, the authors have created a joint book that is both comprehensive and understandable for everybody. The authors start by exploring inner pictures in general and how they influence us in everyday life, in memories, and in dreams, using examples from sports, business and other fields. The book then examines how inner pictures and the imagination can be used for therapy. The applications are drawn both from medical and non-medical treatments, including biofeedback, sleep, hypnosis, autogenic training, and the healing of physical diseases. The authors then examine the methods of imaginative psychotherapy. Additional contemporary methods are also utilised, to make this a completely up-to-date interventional approach.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers clear, practical, and simple recommendations for treating patients with personality disorders. The goals of the book are twofold: 1) to describe the essential elements of Transference-Focused Psychotherapy (TFP), an evidence-based treatment for Borderline Personality Disorder, and 2) to describe how core principles and techniques of TFP can be used in a variety of settings to improve clinical management of patients with a broad spectrum of personality pathology, even when patients are not engaged in individual psychotherapy. A short introduction outlines in concise language the core elements of TFP and its origins in object relations theory. The book then takes the clinician through the process of: 1) comprehensive diagnosis, 2) negotiation of the treatment frame, and 3) the overarching strategies, techniques, and tactics used in the individual treatment, including helpful, accessible clinical vignettes. Subsequent chapters build on the literature of TFP in individual psychotherapy, broadening its applications to include crisis management, family engagement, inpatient psychiatry, pharmacotherapy, medical settings, psychiatry residency training. Fundamentals of Transference-Focused Psychotherapy is a valuable resource for psychiatrists, psychologists, and all other medical professionals treating patients suffering from Borderline Personality Disorder, and other severe personality disorder presentations.

Book excerpt: This book is intended to sensitise psychotherapists, to strengthen practitioners' intercultural competence and to encourage them to form psychotherapeutic relationships with people with an immigration background who are suffering from mental health problems. In this context, intercultural psychotherapy refers to the therapeutic work between psychotherapists and patients who hail from different cultural contexts, which often considerably hampers language- and culture-based understanding. In the current context of globalisation and growing crises around the world, an increasing number of people with a migration background require psychotherapeutic treatment; as a result, intercultural psychotherapy may well become the rule rather than the exception. Psychotherapists are therefore challenged to adapt to such a context. Overcoming these barriers requires certain competencies such as working with a qualified interpreter. Contributions from international experts from the field of intercultural psychotherapy provide vital insights into the theory and practice of intercultural work with patients suffering from conditions such as PTSD, depression, anxiety, personality disorders and schizophrenic disorders. These interdisciplinary specialists describe their work, share valuable lessons learned, and put forward concrete recommendations.

Case studies of integrated or unified treatment approaches are provided for each disorder, along with the theoretical and technical factors that are involved in applying these approaches in clinical practice. Supplementary online materials include PowerPoint slides and test questions to help readers further expand their understanding of integrated and unified approaches for the anxiety disorders and assess their newfound knowledge. Graduate and undergraduate students, novice and seasoned therapists, and researchers will learn the rationale for and the history of past and contemporary integrated and unified models of treatment to gain better insight into anxiety disorders.

Book excerpt: Stephen Palmer is Joint award winner of the Annual Counselling Psychology Award for outstanding professional and scientific contribution to Counselling Psychology in Britain for 2000. `The editors′ support for the integrative project is clear, but the book will hold its own with the sceptics too. I recommend it′ - Counselling at Work This innovative and timely book examines the issues and ideas surrounding integration and eclecticism in a therapeutic context, and provides a detailed account of a wide range of approaches in use. Following an exploration of the origins of integrative and eclectic processes, 10 approaches are explained in detail. Chapters on each approach: describe its central concepts, assumptions and therapeutic goals; outline its view of how psychological disturbance is acquired, perpetuated and resolved; examine how the theory relates to practice - including examples of typical sessions and case studies; and consider which clients might benefit. Further chapters explore the implications of using integrative and eclectic approaches for training, supervision, for working in a time-limited context and from a multicultural perspective.
