Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: The fifth issue of the Interdisciplinary Journal for Religion and Transformation in Contemporary Society (J-RaT) centers on the topic of religion, transformation and sex/gender. The focal point will be on religious and cultural transformation processes and their repercussions on gender roles, constructs and representations on the one hand, and on sex and/or gender transformations which are embedded in the context of specific religious traditions on the other. Transformation is understood here as change, alteration and reformatting. The multifaceted connections between religion, transformation and sex/gender are concretized in an abundance of material and symbolic phenomena and are examined starting from different subject-specific and methodical approaches.

Book excerpt: This handbook presents a comprehensive introduction to the core areas of philosophy of education combined with an up-to-date selection of the central themes. The book provides a state-of-the-art overview of philosophy of education, covering a range of topics: Voices from the present and the past deals with 36 major figures that philosophers of education rely on; Schools of thought addresses 14 stances including Eastern, Indigenous, and African philosophies of education as well as religiously inspired philosophies of education such as Jewish and Islamic; Revisiting enduring educational debates scrutinizes 25 issues heavily debated in the past and the present, for example care and justice, democracy, and the curriculum; New areas and developments addresses 17 emerging issues that have garnered considerable attention like neuroscience, videogames, and radicalization. The collection is relevant for lecturers teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in philosophy of education as well as for colleagues in teacher training. Moreover, it helps junior researchers in philosophy of education to situate the problems they are addressing within the wider field of philosophy of education and offers a valuable update for experienced scholars dealing with issues in the sub-discipline. Combined with different conceptions of the purpose of philosophy, it discusses various aspects, using diverse perspectives to do so. Book Synopsis Gender and Language Learning by : Daniela Elsner
Download or read book Gender and Language Learning written by Daniela Elsner and published by Narr Francke Attempto Verlag. This book was released on 2016-06-13 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Gender Studies have found their way into most domains of academic research and teaching, they are not directly in the spotlight of foreign language teaching pedagogy and research. However, teachers are confronted with gender issues in the language classroom everyday. By the use of language alone, they construct or deconstruct gender roles; with the choice of topics they shape gender identities in the classroom; and their ways of approaching pupils clearly mirrors their gender sensitivity. The book "Gender and Language Learning" aims at raising awareness towards gender issues in different areas of foreign language teaching and learning. The primary objective of the book is to spark university students', trainee teachers' and in-service teachers' analysis and reflection of gender relations in the foreign language learning and teaching section.
Book Synopsis Kant’s Theory of Value by : Christoph Horn
Download or read book Kant’s Theory of Value written by Christoph Horn and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-10-03 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In explicit form, Kant does not speak that much about values or goods. The reason for this is obvious: the concepts of ‘values’ and ‘goods’ are part of the eudaimonistic tradition, and he famously criticizes eudaimonism for its flawed ‘material’ approach to ethics. But he uses, on several occasions, the traditional teleological language of goods and values. Especially in the Groundwork and the Critique of Practical Reason, Kant develops crucial points on this conceptual basis. Furthermore, he implicitly discusses issues of conditional and unconditional values, subjective and objective values, aesthetic or economic values etc. In recent Kant scholarship, there has been a controversy on the question how moral and nonmoral values are related in Kant’s account of human dignity. This leads to the more fundamental problem if Kant should be seen as a prescriptvist (antirealist) or as subscribing to a more objective rational agency account of goods. This issue and several further questions are addressed in this volume.

Book Synopsis Communicating Gender in Context by : Helga Kotthoff
Download or read book Communicating Gender in Context written by Helga Kotthoff and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contributions to the book Communicating Gender in Context deal not only with grammatical gender, but also with discursive procedures for constructing gender as a relevant social category in text and context. Attention is directed to European cultures which till now have come up short in linguistic and discourse analytic gender studies, e.g., Austria, Spain, Turkey, Germany, Poland and Sweden. But also English speech communities and questions of English grammatical gender are dealt with.In accordance with recent sociolinguistic research the contributors refrain from generalizing theses about how men and women normally speak; no conversational style feature adheres so firmly to one sex as was thought in early feminism. The studies, however, show that even today the feminine gender is often staged in a way that leads to situative asymmetry to the advantage of men. The broader societal context of patriarchy does not determine all communicative encounters, but demands particular efforts from women and men to be subverted.

Book Synopsis Spanish as a second and third language by : Jonas Grünke
Download or read book Spanish as a second and third language written by Jonas Grünke and published by Frank & Timme GmbH. This book was released on 2024-05-15 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spoken as a foreign language by around 24 million people worldwide, Spanish can be the second language (L2) of monolingually raised learners who acquire it in school. Ever more often it is also the third or a further language (L3) of learners who have previously studied another foreign language (for example Spanish after English in Germany) or who acquired more than one language during early childhood, as is the case with heritage speakers. This book explores the intersections between linguistics and language pedagogy related to the acquisition of L2 and L3 Spanish in various contexts worldwide. Fostering the interdisciplinary dialogue, it combines contributions by linguists and specialists in didactics, which not only examine the interface between basic linguistic and applied research but also develop proposals and materials for concrete teaching situations.

Book excerpt: STEM of Desire: Queer Theories and Science Education locates, creates, and investigates intersections of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education and queer theorizing. Manifold desires—personal, political, cultural—produce and animate STEM education. Queer theories instigate and explore (im)possibilities for knowing and being through desires normal and strange. The provocative original manuscripts in this collection draw on queer theories and allied perspectives to trace entanglements of STEM education, sex, sexuality, gender, and desire and to advance constructive critique, creative world-making, and (com)passionate advocacy. Not just another call for inclusion, this volume turns to what and how STEM education and diverse, desiring subjects might be(come) in relation to each other and the world. STEM of Desire is the first book-length project on queering STEM education. Eighteen chapters and two poems by 27 contributors consider STEM education in schools and universities, museums and other informal learning environments, and everyday life. Subject areas include physical and life sciences, engineering, mathematics, nursing and medicine, environmental education, early childhood education, teacher education, and education standards. These queering orientations to theory, research, and practice will interest STEM teacher educators, teachers and professors, undergraduate and graduate students, scholars, policy makers, and academic libraries. Book Synopsis Communicating Gender by : Suzanne Romaine
Download or read book Communicating Gender written by Suzanne Romaine and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 1998-10-01 with total page 694 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking a cross-disciplinary approach, Suzanne Romaine's main concern is to show how language and discourse play key roles in understanding and communicating gender and culture. In addition to linguistics--which provides the starting point and central focus of the book--she draws on the fields of anthropology, biology, communication, education, economics, history, literary criticism, philosophy, psychology, and sociology. The text covers the "core" areas in the study of language and gender, including how and where gender is indexed in language, how men and women speak, how children acquire gender differentiated language, and sexism in language and language reform. Although most of the examples are drawn primarily from English, other European languages and non-European languages, such as Japanese are considered. The text is written in an accessible way so that no prior knowledge of linguistics is necessary to understand the chapters containing linguistic analysis. Each chapter is followed by exercises and discussion questions to facilitate the book's use as a classroom text. The author reviews scholarly treatments of gender, and then uses her own data material from the corpora of spoken and written English usage. Special features include an examination of contemporary media sources such as newspapers, advertising, and television; a discussion of women's speculative fiction; a study of gender and advertising, with special attention paid to the role played by language in these domains; and a review of French feminist thought, particularly as it relates to the issue of language reform.

Book Synopsis Social Science Theories in Adult Education Research by : Agnieszka Bron
Download or read book Social Science Theories in Adult Education Research written by Agnieszka Bron and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2002 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relationship between adult education research and theory is one of tension. On the one hand, there are several empirical studies carried out without any theoretical guidance. On the other hand, there is theorizing and theory building taking place without any empirical support. Social Science Theories in Adult Education Research, the third volume of the Bochum Studies in International Adult Education series, pleads for the importance of the combination of empirical and theoretical work in a symbiotic way. Good empirical studies need theoretical guidance and good theory building needs a solid empirical basis; thus the book explores and displays the most often used theories and theoretical perspectives in adult education research in the last decade within the European discourse and analyzes their potentials for adult education research. The chapters presented in this volume have a more or less similar underlying structure. They display the most important contours of the theory or perspective in question; they analyze and discuss the relation to adult education research, focusing on examples of other researcher's work; and they give an outlook on what can be expected of the respective paradigm's in the future.
