Book excerpt: 191 Apart from numerous difficulties arising from the high pressure technique as such, there is a natural limitation to the possibility of applying a hydrostatic pressure, since liquids under pressure will solidify above a certain pressure limit. 8 2 Up to pressures of 3 X 10 kg.jm. at room temperature, a liquid like isopentane can be used. For higher pressures helium gas may be used, perhaps to about 9 2 10 kg.jm. , but BRIDGMAN already encountered enormous leakage difficulties 7 when using this gas at 7.10 kg.jm.2 at 90° K. A solution has been found by applying mechanical pressure for the range 8 9 2 between 3 X 10 and 10 kg.jm. , by using silver chloride as transmittant. In this case, however, one has to apply unknown corrections for shearing stress and deformation of the sample, a problem which BRIDGMAN solved experimentally by a determination of the resistivity in the pressure region between 2 and 8 2 5 X 10 kg.jm. , by the hydrostatic and by the mechanical pressure method as well, and applying the correction factor thus determined to the results obtained at higher pressures. Though this method seems to be right in good approximation, the data for the highest pressures are to be considered as less accurate.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Specialist Periodical Reports provide systematic and detailed review coverage of progress in the major areas of chemical research. Written by experts in their specialist fields the series creates a unique service for the active research chemist, supplying regular critical in-depth accounts of progress in particular areas of chemistry. For over 80 years the Royal Society of Chemistry and its predecessor, the Chemical Society, have been publishing reports charting developments in chemistry, which originally took the form of Annual Reports. However, by 1967 the whole spectrum of chemistry could no longer be contained within one volume and the series Specialist Periodical Reports was born. The Annual Reports themselves still existed but were divided into two, and subsequently three, volumes covering Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry. For more general coverage of the highlights in chemistry they remain a 'must'. Since that time the SPR series has altered according to the fluctuating degree of activity in various fields of chemistry. Some titles have remained unchanged, while others have altered their emphasis along with their titles; some have been combined under a new name whereas others have had to be discontinued.

Book excerpt: The concept of the laser came into existence more than a decade ago when ScHAWLOW and TowNES showed that the maser principle could be extended to the optical region. Since then this field has developed at an incredible pace which hardly anybody could have foreseen. The laser turned out to be a meeting place for such different disciplines as optics (e.g. spectroscopy), optical pumping, radio engineering, solid state physics, gas discharge physics and many other fields. The underlying structure of the laser theory is rather simple. The main questions are: what are the light intensities (a), what are the frequencies (b), what fluctua tions occur (c), or, in other words, what are the coherence properties. Roughly speaking these questions are treated by means of the rate equations (a), the semiclassical equations (b), and the fully quantum mechanical equations (c), respectively. The corresponding chapters are written in such a way that they can be read independently from each other. For more details about how to proceed, the reader is advised to consult Chap. I.4.

Book excerpt: How to Find Out about Physics: A Guide to Sources of Information Arranged by the Decimal Classification is an index of materials in physics. The scheme of presentation in the selection utilizes the Dewey Decimal Classification. The text first covers the careers in physics. The subsequent chapters deal with various physics materials, such as books, handbooks, dissertations, periodicals, and abstracts. The remaining chapters cover specific areas of physics, which includes optics, relativity, quantum, mechanics, and nuclear physics. The book will be of great use to students, librarian, and physicists.

Book excerpt: This book, written by one of the pioneers of laser theory, is now considered a classic by many laser physicists. Originally published in the prestigious Encyclopedia of Physics series, it is now being republished in paperback to make it available not only to professors and scientists, but also to students. It presents a thorough treatment of the theory of laser resonators, the quantum theory of coherence, and the quantization of electromagnetic fields. Especial emphasis is placed on the quantum-mechanical treatment of laser light by means of quantum-mechanical Langevin equations, the density matrix equation, and the Fokker-Planck equation. The semiclassical approach and the rate equa tion approach are also presented. The principles underlying these approaches are used to derive the relevant equations, from which, in turn, the various properties of laser light are derived. Preface. Book excerpt: This book delivers a thorough derivation of nonrelativistic interaction models of electromagnetic field theories with thermoelastic solids and viscous fluids, the intention being to derive unique representations for the observable field quantities. This volume is intended for and will be useful to students and researchers working on all aspects of electromagneto-mechanical interactions in the materials sciences of complex solids and fluids.
