Speech acts are embedded in situations that may vary in a multitude of parameters. Speech production and comprehension necessarily have to be both robust and flexible. Flexibility includes that speakers vary in speed, articulation, choice of words and interaction style, depending on specific context conditions. There is need of theoretical approaches that do not exclusively stick to ideals such as grammaticality and coherence - which collapse when confronted with irregularities - but are robust enough to deal with irregularities and disruptions. The handbook describes different methods of analyzing or reconstructing variants and options of language use. The articles contain transcriptions of spontaneous speech as well as experimentally verified studies. The same holds for simulation techniques modelling partial processes and evaluating their efficiency. Solche Klassifikationen sind für die forensische Praxis unverzichtbar, verbergen allerdings häufig die linguistische Vielfalt innerhalb eines Texttyps. Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht die stilistische Variation in zwei konträr zueinanderstehenden Textklassen: rechtsextremen Droh- und Schmähbriefen sowie linksextremen Bekennerschreiben und Positionspapieren. Die über 150 authentischen Texte wurden mithilfe eines semi-automatisierten Clusterverfahrens hinsichtlich ihrer stilistischen Charakteristika gruppiert. Die resultierenden Stilausprägungen veranschaulichen einerseits die große Diversität linguistischer Merkmale innerhalb einer Textklasse, andererseits zeigt sich, dass einige Stilausprägungen gleichermaßen aus beiden Textklassen gespeist werden - trotz deren gegensätzlichen Funktionen und politischen Ideen. Die Ergebnisse dieser Studie bereichern nicht nur unser linguistisches Verständnis der beiden untersuchten Textklassen, sondern zeigen auch für die Praxis der Autorenanalyse neue Perspektiven und Herangehensweisen auf.

Book excerpt: The goal of this book is to formulate a modern theoretical approach for rhetorical studies in a variety of disciplines in the humanities, media research, and other cultural studies. The discipline of rhetoric originally concerned itself with linguistic forms of communication, and its basic theory was developed with such cases in mind. With respect to this ancient tradition, there are numerous books that provide a historical overview of the field. There is also a wide array of introductory works and research contributions that deal with the practice of political rhetoric. On the other hand, only a few 20th century academics have attempted to theoretically rehabilitate rhetoric (after its decline as an academic discipline in Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries) and to give rhetorical theory a modern, new, and further reaching perspective. Two notable examples have been Kenneth Burke and Brian Vickers. The book begins with the assumption that rhetoric is not merely limited to linguistic action, but rather is present everywhere in the communicative world.
