Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbooks for Bible Classes Now both of these are true ideas, and they are the principal ideas belonging to the outward rites of Christianity. For this reason, as well as because the name has been in common use for many hundred years, we apply the word sacrament to designate these ordinances, though it is not given to them in the Bible. It is convenient to have such a name, for we often want to speak of these rites in common and this is an appropriate name, for it indicates their chief features. But we must remember, that as it is not a Bible name, we cannot infer anything from it, except what We find taught in the Bible itself about the things that are meant by it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbooks: Bible Classes and Private Students Christianity is in its essential nature remedial; it is not a mere benefit bestowed to increase the wellbeing of men; it is a deliverance, and indeed the only deliverance, from a most terrible and deadly evil; and that evil is, throughout the pages of Revelation, described as having its root and chief part in sin. The founder of Christianity was called Jesus, because He should save His people from their sin; He was hailed as "the Lamb of God, that taketh away the sin of the world;" He declared that He came to call sinners to the kingdom of God; and it is pro claimed as a faithful saying among His disciples "that Jesus Christ came into the world to save sinners." Entirely consistent with this are the anticipations and promises of the Old Testament. In the Law, the Prophets, and the Psalms, sin is recognised as the radical and greatest evil from which man needs to be saved. Yet the Bible gives no didactic explanation of what sin is, but from the very outset of its teaching assumes that to be known. Just as the inspired writers do not think it needful to begin with a definition of God or a proof of His existence, as little do they count this necessary in regard to sin. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbooks for Bible Classes and Private Students: Church and State, a Historical Handbook I am informed that a re-issue of this small volume is desired. Since the first edition, the question of Church and State has been broadly raised for wales and Scotland. Behind these too there are aspects of that question causing difficulty in England, in Italy, in Russia, and in some other countries. Yet all these are mere fragments of one problem which the Christian world has for two thousand years been working out, on the lines and with the results which the following pages attempt to summarise. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gist of the Bible: A Complete Handbook for Class and Home Study With this end in View, the author has followed the natural divisions of the Bible; first, giving the periods; then their subdivisions, and, lastly, the events themselves, each with its proper reference. The text of King James' Version has been made use of and Usher's chronology has been adopted, though, in a number of instances, new chronological data appear in the footnotes. A few points of interest and impor tance have also been elucidated in the footnotes. At the close of each study, questions covering the subject matter discussed are given. The divisions of the book are termed studies in the place of lessons, because, in some instances, they are too lengthy to be considered at one time. The suggestion is made, therefore, that if this treatise should be used as a text-book for Bible classes. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Chicago Bible Class True individualism tends to the truest universalism. Ordinary personalism tends to exclusiveness in favor of the one concerned. In the former position one sees that the inevitable sequence of cause and effect which is bearing him along with it to the fulfilling of his destiny, is bearing all mankind to the same end as well. In the other, one believes himself to be approaching a desired consummation which is impos sible for others. The latter view tends to separation in thought, purpose and action the former, to unity of these, mak ing of mankind a veritable brotherhood, each member of which finds and holds his own place. He recognizes his relation to his brethren the while, holds his own views consequent upon his individual view of that which is abstract for all, yet knows that the individual views of others are the necessity for them, as are his for him, and that all, as one body, are march ing along the King's highway, the royal road to self knowledge.
